“Those of us who don’t want a prime job are called the lost generation” (Gordon) This lost generation consists of actors, artists, mechanics, and musicians. With these careers in mind, is college necessary for everyone? Because there are other options, like a trade school, artistry, or starting a business, college might not be the best option for everyone. Debt, uncertainty, and failure rates are high all reasons a college education is not necessary for everyone. A college education is not necessary for everyone because it acquires a great deal of debt. An article by FoxBusiness states,“ Jeff McKenna, a 32-year-old from Loveland, Colo., said he doesn't believe college is worth the cost. Mr. McKenna went to a trade school, earning a certificate as a mechanic, and now earns a base salary of about $50,000 a year. He said he's never gone three weeks without a job, including during the recession. I have friends from high school that are still making half of what I’m making, and they went and got a four-year degree or better, and they're still $50-, $60-, $70,000 dollars in debt,” Mr. McKenna says, There's a huge need for skilled labor in the country” (FoxBusiness). This is to say that students are acquiring vast amounts of debt from college are not making the money necessary to pay it off. McKenna, who didn't go to college, is a successful mechanic who makes a tremendous amount of money. Another example is from Hope Yen Associated Press says, “Nine in 10
People who advertise college have went on and on about how it’s a necessity. The Puritans who created Harvard were worried about how college could lead to a shortage in the church. In College Calculus, John Dewey declares that a good education would make you a better citizen. With the increase of inequality in the world, receiving a college or post high school education is no longer the way to branch out from the rest of the society. College is now necessary to get
A former president, Theodore Roosevelt, once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are,” but yet more than 30% of students don’t attend college the following fall after graduation. As of right now, college is only an option for students, not a requirement. But as technology increases, and jobs become tougher to get a hold of, college is more of a necessity and definitely worth the price tag. It has long term benefits and increases the chances of a successful future. College is definitely worth the cost for the reasons that college graduates have a higher salary than a high school graduates, more and more jobs recently require a college degree, and college graduates more likely to have health insurance and retirement plans.
The whole idea that students don’t really need a college education in today’s society is questionable, because employers will often hire someone based on whether or not they have a degree, as well as their past experiences. In many cases today, the people that are making a reasonable amount of money either have a college degree or invented/discovered something that ended up making them wealthy. If you’re one of the lucky few who have invented or discovered something of significance, then you may not need a college degree. For the many of us who aren’t as fortunate, however, a college degree is a
College isn’t for everyone, and a reason behind that is because the career you might want to enter doesn’t need a college graduate diploma. For example myself I’m not in college, I am in a free vocational school for welding and going through this line of work I will be able to make a lot of money over the years doing it. Another reason why I don’t think college is for everyone is because a lot of people go to college and manage to find themselves in debt because they couldn’t afford college themselves and pulled student loans. Also following that the career that they are preparing for most of the time doesn’t end up making enough money to get themselves out of debt and that isn’t good whatsoever. The only reason why I think that people should
College is a great place for many to experience new things and to further education. However, college is not for everyone. According to the film Ivory Tower, college teaches people valuable skills such as networking with peers and extensive knowledge. College also provides students, upon graduation, with a degree and proper credentials. Based on a survey done by the Pew Research Center; the article “The Rising Cost of Not going to College,” states that “economic analysis consistently find that college graduates regardless of generation are doing better than those with less education,” this shows that there is a reasonable gap between a college degree and a high school diploma. On the other hand, it may not be worth the rising costs. Carolina Bird, author of “Where College Fails Us,” mentions in her article “in the current slowdown it has become evident that there were never, and probably never will be, enough jobs requiring higher education to go around,” (59-60) this shows some people's job outlook may not be aligned with their major. Jeffrey Selingo’s article “Is College Worth the Cost? Many Recent Graduates Don’t Think So,” says that “nearly half of college graduates in their 20s are underemployed, meaning the jobs they have do not require a bachelor’s degree,” this brings up the possibility of college not being beneficial to many. College can be needed because of higher salaries after graduation and providing people with the tools to succeed. On the contrary, going to
Even though many people keep complain about the high tuition of attending a university, the reason why college education is still worth to attend is that people who had a college degree have a better career compare to people who does not have one. According to David Leonhardt, “Three decades ago, full-time workers with a bachelor’s degree made 40 percent more than those with only a high-school diploma. Last year, the gap reached 83 percent. College graduates, though hardly immune from the downturn, are also far less likely
Are college degrees worth the great debt? Countless millennials in America have fallen to the media’s claims that a college degree no longer has value. Media sources reported that college degrees are no longer a requirement for some jobs. These claims have resulted in scientific experiments in search for a definite truth. The outcome was catastrophic for the media because it was quite the opposite of what they claimed. Traditional beliefs that college is a necessity for a successful career have still proven to be true, here’s why.
The Higher Education Bubble The Higher Education Bubble, written by Glenn Harlan Reynolds, is a book about the many college students who have accumulated thousands and thousands of dollars in college debt and how the price keeps rising more and more each year. There have also been many families that have willingly put themselves in boatloads of debt in hopes of their child getting a better (Higher) education. Reynolds refers to this continuing pattern as The Higher Education Bubble. Reynolds writes how many students believe that since there is a multitude of people going to school and accruing more and more debt, that it is normal.
Society has established in our minds that it is extremely important for us to go to college if we want to succeed in life. School as we know is not for everybody. Some of the most successful people in this world did not go to college including George Washington who is one of our founding fathers. People feel that college is the only way in which they can reach their dreams which is not true. With hard work and dedication you can go as far as you want in life. In college you learn what they give you to learn. Many of us just go to college because “it’s the right thing to do”. It gives you a title and nothing more. You can learn what you are doing at college with a simple click of a button at home. The Times had reported last spring that about fifty five percent of college graduates are working in jobs that need a college degree. (thechoice) These young college graduates are not developing
“It is virtually impossible to compete in today’s global economy without a college degree” (Scott). These days it’s easier to get a job if you have graduated from college. Not everyone continues their education, but it’s harder to be employed. Although some believe you can make it without a degree, many say it’s a better choice to go to college.
College isn't for everyone Today, a college education is considered a necessity, even though it's a option. We are raised that it's a requirement to go to college in order to be successful. As technology is constantly becoming more advanced and almost running everything, college isn't indeed or should be required for anyone. Successful people may have never even been on a campus are just as successful as a graduate with a masters degree. The reason why people go to college is because they are pressured to not because they want to, a majority of the time.
According to Procon.org, “ The following successful people never enrolled in college or never completed their college degrees: Richard Branson, founder and chairman of the Virgin Group; Charles Culpepper, owner and CEO of Coca Cola; Ellen Degeneres, comedian and actress; Michael Dell, founder of Dell, Inc.; Walt Disney, Disney Corporation founder; Bill Gates, Microsoft founder; Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple; Wolfgang Puck, chef and restauranteur; Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple; Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook” (Stansberry). These people achieved very much without doing much, but in the competitive years approaching, genius ideas and get-rich-quick schemes are going to be harder to come by and many people will be left being failures who skipped college because they thought they had an idea that could be the next Microsoft that ended up being mediocre in comparison. More and more jobs are requiring college educations and you can’t start up a humongous business without money, which is earned through a job, which, again, is earned through a college education. According to a study provided by Georgetown University, based on job projections and the economy, “... in 2018 approximately 63% of jobs will require some college education or a degree” (Carnevale, et al). Jobs are essential to becoming successful. A microscopic portion of people actually make it into sports or start a multimillion dollar business. (Not to mention that the majority of these people actually had college degrees too.) People grow up believing that they’ll invent something amazing, but chances are they won’t. The only way they’ll succeed in life- or survive, at least- is if they embrace their blue, white or pink-collar job that they can only earn through college. People can’t go through their life expecting to wake up and be
When people do not go to college they have to start at entry level jobs and make minimum wage. Students who do go to college have better job options, and make better money with benefits. “According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, college grads earn an average of $20,000 more than those with a high school education when both groups are several years into their careers” (Sportelli). These earnings are a great difference, and that is if someone with only a diploma even gets the job to be considered lucky. “Employers increasingly want workers with at least some college education, be it a degree or even a certificate in a trade, such as nursing assistant or welding, from a technical or community college” (Luhby). Therefore, because people with college educations have better job openings and positions with better pay, many more students should be enrolling and attending
People have a mindset in their head that if you don't attend college you will be a billionaire such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg yet the ratio of non college grads to billionaires or even millionaires is extremely low. College guarantees a spot in the middle class and will earn you a good living to support a family in these uncertain economic
While politicians say it is necessary to success, a college education does not equip you for the real job world – and it is definitively not for everyone. In fact, according to US News a third of college graduates have jobs that can be performed by those with only a high school diploma. According
