No, I don’t think Hotchkiss High school should implicate the honor code. The cheating here, at Hotchkiss high school ,won’t be solved while left in the hands of its own students.
The students are not going to willingly make their lives more difficult than they already are. The amount of homework a student has can be overwhelming. To cheaters, it’s not about integrity or “doing the right thing”. To them, doing the right thing, is doing what needs to be done no matter how you do it . Research shows that 40% of students who have violated the honor code and have not been caught. Cheaters will always find newer and better ways to cheat ,whether it’s at school or at home, and still get away with it. There is no way to get rid of cheating.
A study done in Source E shows that there are only eight percent of students that would turn in a fellow student for cheating. If that sort of dishonesty becomes rampant in a school, the honor codes can no longer be upheld properly. The honesty of students is key to the success of honor codes. If a student is dishonest about the misbehavior of another student, then the honor code goes to waste, because now the cheating has not been taken care of by the justice of the honor system. There is no foreseeable remedy for such behavior, and there will always be a “bad apple to ruin the bunch.”
Dulles high school, my alma mater, is an extremely competitive institution that houses Fort Bend ISD’s Math and Science Academy. My graduating class of about 600 students was filled with brilliant minds who all had the same goal of beating each other out in class rank and GPA and receiving automatic admissions to their dream colleges. There are many ways in which the students tried to achieve this goal. Some individuals took on easier classes to try and raise their GPA. Others did intense amounts of tutoring to better grasp difficult topics; however most of my fellow AP students decided to take the easiest route in receiving high grades. They decided to cheat their way to the top. All throughout my high school experience, cheating circles plagued each and every one of my classrooms. Pictures of tests answers
A board to enforce and revise the honor system could be put in place as well. Many research studies have shown that schools with honor codes have less cheating than those who do not have one in place. Technology makes cheating easy, although it doesn’t mean an honor code wouldn’t help to provide a moral guilt in the mind of students who think to cheat and even prevent it. Criticisms of honor codes are the minority opinion due to the known effectiveness of the codes, which is why, along with many other reasons, East Granby High School should establish an honor
First of all, a cheater does not change his ways, because if they want to cheat they will find a way and do it even if they signed a honor code. As source D debated that “even here [University of Virginia], where honor is so well defined and policed by an elite student committee, plagiarism has become a problem.” Even in an university with an elevated system of honor code, the students still cheated because they choose to, completely ignoring the honor code. Also, the source C indicated “if a student enters a college with mostly “cheater” types [will encourage] even “honest” types to cheat.” This is a clear example of the decision took by any type of student to cheat, regardless of a honor code.
When asking a student do they think cheating is bad most will say yes and will even admit to cheating.Cheating doesn’t affect many students on a regular day basis until they have been caught red-handed.When it comes to cheating blame automatically goes to the student but what about the adult as well. Some teachers have admitted to seeing student cheat but haven't said anything because it was on homework. Some teachers have even gone to the depth of helping a student cheat on a test. There was a survey that was taken through all of the high schools asking students if they had ever cheated on a test, the results were that there were 64 percent who cheated,58 who plagiarised, and above all 95 percent of them admitted to cheating of some sort.(Academic Integrity Under Statistics paragraph 3 )Students cheat to make it through a semester and to make their parents proud.Students cheat simply because of lack of knowledge, pressure from the adult looking for them to do their best, and last lack of time.
Students from my high school, Myojo Gakuen high school know that cheating is unacceptable. Yet, they cheated on quizzes or exams by using cell phones, bringing small pieces of paper with answers of test, or teaching answers to other students behind the teacher was back during the test. Not all students cheated on quizzes and exams; however, some students often cheated on quizzes and exams. One of my classmates, for example, used to cheat a lot. Even the teachers kept telling him to not cheat on quizzes and exams, he could not stop cheating. He always did not have a confidence that he could get a great score without cheating because he did not study a lot, and he made excuses why he cheated on the test to the teachers every time the he was caught cheating on quizzes or exams. At the end, his mother came to school and the teachers told his mother what he always did during the tests and he finally stopped cheating. Other students at Myojo Gakuen high school did not care about those students who cheated on the tests unless they made noise or interrupted to other student’s forces during the test. Additionally, the students who did not cheat on the tests thought that it was each student’s decision and responsibility that if they wanted to cheat on the tests or not. Students at LaGuardia Community College, on the other hand,
Honor codes should be taken to the extreme to prevent injustice in the school systems. Bascall gives the idea of “spying to greatly improve the honor code in schools, including schools such as South Pointe High School (Source A). South Pointe has a fairly restrictive honor code when it comes to things like plagiarism. But, the teachers are not always watching the class. The schools honor code could be greatly reformed by this one simple addition to all class rooms. Not to mention, the laptops that are loaned out are able to be viewed at any time, having any history pulled back up. So, all of these laptops have a form of spy cam in them already. This addition was likely and effect of the research help in 2007-2008 by Ms. Sledge and Ms. Pringle. Their research found that “44%” of student “believe the honor code is enforced fairly,” (Source E). This means that half of the students disagreed, thinking it was either too strong, or to weak. This goes with McCabe and Pavela Saying “two-thirds” of students have admitted to cheating in the last year, (Source F). So, odds are, the half that agreed with the honor code and some that disagreed were the group that has cheated; and they either like the honor code because it was easy and they were able to get away with stuff, or they dis liked it because it was a little too strict—causing these cheating kids to get in trouble. A strong honor code is
The honor code system basically tells students that is up to them to decide whether it is acceptable to cheat or not. Although, most people would hope that the students at Rockhurst possess enough integrity to know that cheating is wrong, it only takes a few “cheater-types” to undermine the “honest-types”.(Source C) As Rutgers University professor Donald McCabe said “honor codes don’t always work. Their success depends on a culture of academic integrity”. The students need to have an expectation that cheating is not tolerated by their peers.
To begin with, the author assumes that honor codes are effective in reducing cheating among students. While this may be true, other possible scenarios have to be considered. Fewer reports on cheating do not imply a reduction in cheating. Students could come under an agreement, and simply not report any cheating. Consequently, students could continue cheating while the number of reported cheating remains less. Again, even if the students report cheating among students,
The honor code system basically tells students that is up to them to decide whether it is acceptable to cheat or not. First, establishing an honor code will mold integrity into a social norm. Likewise, enforcing rules to eliminate cheating and unoriginal content remarkably impacts the culture of the school. By enforcing strict rules and punishments into the school's system, students gradually grow aware and take pre-cautions. As a result, "peer culture [develops] on honor code campuses... [that makes] cheating socially unacceptable"(source F). Though a handful of students may attempt to evade the honor code, the new culture will lead them to be "embarrassed to have other students find
Cheating has become a major problem here in the United States. It seems teachers have not figured out a way to prevent students from cheating. Academic dishonesty is a virus that has spread around the entire campus. Cheating cannot be fixed by school officials because it is too large to eradicate, and because there is no way for teachers or anyone to stop students from having the desire to cheat.
The concept is unnecessarily enforced and a burden to stressed out students. A quote from Sophocles states “I would prefer even to fail with honor than win by cheating.” Students should have the ambition to work hard, study, and succeed on their own and not depend on cheating. An honor code should be in place to assure that students acknowledge that the traits of honor and trust must be carried on after high school as well as college when grades are no longer apparent.
Adopting an honor code can be a difficult process and relies greatly on the integrity of the student and their values on cheating. For example, Source C delineates a “feedback loop” on how an honor code can either create a “culture of dishonesty” or one of trust and integrity. At the core of this feedback loop are the students and whether there are more “cheaters” or honest students. While there are undoubtedly numerous “cheaters”
Cheating is like an addiction. Once you start, you can’t stop. All over the world, students have resorted to cheating, which has turned into a major habit that needs to be taken more seriously. Today, most schools are making the cheating policy much more stricter, as this would reinforce the idea to students that cheating is wrong. Cheating has become a worldwide issue that needs to be addressed throughout schools. Cheating policies should be more strict, as it pertains to students doing academically well or not. Cheating is not beneficial in any way because although it can get a test grade an A in a certain class, it will not help in future classes or even getting a job in the near future. Teachers and parents also contribute to students cheating and bear the same amount of responsibility.
