Walking down the street, there is an eerie silence. No one walks out of line or at a different pace than permitted. Even if a person would want to change the strictly enforced laws, he or she could not. The citizens have no control over their own lives. How drastically different is that than the life of the average American? All people in the United States, citizen or not, have a multitude of freedoms, such as free speech, assembly, and religion. That is a blessing even if not everyone realizes it. To be an American is to be able to have freedoms even if that person did nothing to deserve them.
With the start of what would be the Revolutionary War, Americans believed that having freedom was essential. They were willing to do anything to ensure that they and their posterity would have all of the freedoms in existence today. Tom Paine asserts, “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my children may have peace.” This courageous and thoughtful statement was the mindset of the leaders during that time. That is how ordinary people were able to establish such thought out goals and advanced laws that would last for as long as they have in that budding country. …show more content…

That is the beauty of having a myriad of freedoms. The Statue of Liberty stood as a beacon of hope to all of the immigrants coming in through Ellis Island during the early twentieth century. By that time, people around the world had heard of the freedoms and opportunities available in America; therefore, millions of immigrants decided to come to America. Without the ample opportunity, immigrants would not have risked everything to come to a foreign country completely outside their comfort zone. This influx of people to the country added different ethnicities, religions, and ways of life to the mix. This characteristic of America has given it the nickname of the Melting
