Of all the typical needs in the readings Becoming a Helper, the two needs that most motivated and influenced me to become a Social Service Worker are as follows, making an impact and caring for others, these two needs are important to me because they are part of who I am as a person. Hence, applying these needs in the field of a Social Service Worker will allow me to make an impact by addressing various areas of needs a client might have. Such as, homelessness, unemployment, depression family violence, and child neglect. Thus, using these quality needs will surely help me to bring-about positive changes and finding solution to these issues while working as a Social Service Worker. First and foremost, I will be discussing the need to make an impact and how this need has helped me with my decision of becoming a Social Service Worker. It is always rewarding when you have made an impact in someone's life, it gives the feeling that you have made a difference to people that truly appreciated your effort and genuineness, and by being that person people wouldn’t be afraid to approach for guidance in times of doubt and unbelievers within themselves. This is the reason making an impact is what I aspire me to continue in a broader sense, even though there would times of disappointments (Corey, 2017). Does making a difference in someone life motivated me in me to become a Social Service Worker? The answer would have to be yes, because it all started back in
Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.
Many reasons exist for why an individual decides to become a social worker. Sometimes those reasons include hopes of creating a better future for vulnerable members of society, advocating for a world free of oppression and prejudice or even creating macro level changes in policy and legislation. In any case, a social worker is guided by his or her passion, commitment and dedication towards an easing of suffering at the micro, mezzo and macro levels for individuals, groups and communities.
Alot of people do not notice the mammoth problem drug abuse is in the United States, and how fast it is increasing in our society. Billions of dollars are spent each year to combat drug treatment but more are spent on buying and selling narcotics. Many people think they
As stated earlier, I believe that the social work field will allow me to bring attention and professional support to disadvantaged populations. Persuading the MSW program at this moment in my life will not only allows me to help those in need, but it will strengthen my personal values and approaches that I consider to be essential in order to efficiently help others. My approach stems from three concepts that I find to be vital: humility, optimism and determination, regardless of the circumstances. Hoping to be permanently guided by those principles, I will continue to embrace my commitment to the disadvantaged and to be a voice for the
Social work is a recognised profession with its own code of ethics and professional standards. It is a complex profession, and social workers have to have a sound knowledge base combined with the skills to carry out their tasks effectively and professionally. The process of developing professional capacity, capabilities and expertise, is an essential, crucial and ongoing part of the social work profession. The College of Social Work created the Professional capability framework (PCF) for the purpose of education and professional development. The nine domains signify various aspects of being a competent social worker. The PCF sets out the stages and the level of knowledge required for social workers as they progress from students to more
My passion for helping the vulnerable is one reason I ‘am inspired to become a social worker. I also want to be available to provide support to those who have nowhere else to turn. My experience in social work has taught me to celebrate the small victories towards positive changes. I look forward to gaining the skills and knowledge to aid me in becoming a successful social worker.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old. I want to change my line of work and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I am sure the fact that I was brought up by two extremely dysfunctional parents and the engaged in relationships that were of that same caliber, has much to do with why I believe I have something of positive significance to offer today. In short, I married at 19 years-old and had 5 children. I married an alcoholic and abuser of all forms and although I knew he drank and was abusive, I did not understand what I was dealing with back then in 1975; I did not understand abuse then as I do today. I grew up in it; I was very accustomed to it, it was normal to me. Ten
We are the present. The future is our children. We all have some child(ren) in our lives whom we love dearly and would probably die for them. They are our future. Many of those children need help; mental, emotional, and physical help. If these children do not receive help, our future will be worse than the present is now. Social workers can help fix that. In the last paper, I addressed the issue of social status/work. The work status fluctuates greatly pending on the field of discussion and the discussion this time is on Social Workers. Social work is a “professional and academic discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and enhance wellbeing of individuals, families, couples, groups, and communities through research, policy planning, community development, direct practice, crisis intervention, ensuring social welfare and security for those affected by social disadvantages such as poverty, psychosocial care to mentally and physically disabled, and raising voices against social injustice for social reforms, including social actions against violations of civil liberties and human rights.” In other words, social work is work carried out by trained personnel with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare. When I say, “in need of help” I’m talking about that mental, physical, and emotional help that was mentioned earlier. In other words, social workers go through hell and back to achieve their mission of helping a
The reason why I am motivated to pursue a professional career in social and human services work is because I believe it is the greatest achievement that I would ever accomplish. It would make me proud to know that I am providing support; protection and safety to people that are in need. “A powerful motive for pursuing social or human service work is personal experience” (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2015, p. 10). This relates to my own personal experience for example when I was growing up I experienced many abuse such as bullying and domestic violence. My own mother was abused by my father and she did not have
Entry 1 On this module you have explored what might have led you to join the social work profession. Why is it important to think about your motivations for becoming social workers and how might this affect the way you practice? Why is self-awareness important in social work practice? Given your own unique background, what areas of social work might you find challenging and why?
I started out like most individuals not knowing what I wanted to do. Since I was young, my mother always coached me to be what she wanted me to be until I got older. Throughout the years, I spent time trying to figure out my career goals and what it is in life I want to achieve. One thing I did and do know is that I have always wanted to help others, but most of all; I wanted to become part of the healthcare family, yes, family. As a result, I believe social work studies will allow me to contribute to making a difference in individual’s lives.
My major goal is to become a social worker. As a student when I was taking math I would help my classmates that were having trouble understanding math most of the time I had help others by doing little things but know I would like to do bigger things that can make a different. When I was 15 years old my cousin and his wife were foster parents and I remember that I used to see the kids crying for their mother. At that time I didn’t comprehend why kids were separated from their parents but it makes me to do something about it, like taking the kids back to their parents. At that time I notice that kids were coming and leaving not staying for long with them because the social worker was helping the parents to get reunited with their kids.
In 2013 a coworker of mine was having a life crisis. Her world before she knew it was turned upside down. She injured herself at work and needed back surgery, was starting the process for a divorce, her daughter was rebelling, and her elderly grandmother was ill. She was limited to individuals to talk to and help her through her situation. I tried to provide her with an ear whenever she needed, provided positive encouragement, as well as provide information on programs that may be able to help her.
Law has come to play a very important part in social work practice. It can be said that the understanding of law underpins and provides duties and power, whilst understanding the statutory legal requirements is essential for effective, fair, anti-discriminatory practice (Brammer 2007). Due to the shear amount of laws and legislation that have been passed or updated over the last decade, the role of the social worker, metaphorically speaking could be said to have become somewhat of a chameleon, forever adapting to their legal environment, whilst trying hard to remain true to the traditional values of the role of a social worker. It is this conflict between law and social work values that will be analyzed in this paper. From looking at the values that underpin the modern day social worker and then looking at some of the main legislation relating to adult services such as the Mental Health Act 2007, the Community Care Act 1996, Mental Capacity Act 2005 the relationship between these Acts’ and how they sit with social work values will then be discussed.
