Currently I have implanted a BYOD program at each school. I am encouraging expansion of this in order to support flipped classrooms. Flipping classrooms encourages students to come prepared to class. Assignments and materials are posted which introduces them to new topics prior to class. The United States Military Academy at West Point has been using this method of studying for years. In high school, this method of studying will help prepare students for
Section II. Teaching Practice Question 1: The Washington County School District organizational strategies in place for teachers has increased academic student growth in my classes. Throughout the year, I participate in professional development activities that enhance my teaching skills and increase student learning. I collaborate with data analysis and colleagues to disaggregate student data, correctly identify the lowest benchmarks that students scored based on FSA performance and Washington County School District Progress Monitoring Program (three assessments from the previous year). For this reason, we develop an "Order of Instruction" for content areas based on data from various student measures that have been assimilated throughout the school year. In like manner, I meet with vertical/grade level teams during preplanning to gather resources and organize materials by units, critique online resources to incorporate new technology into daily lesson objectives. Prior to students entering my classroom on the first day, I locate my class roster in FOCUS, print out all student IEP 's and 504 's and incorporate that information into my data notebook. As a team, we meet weekly to design lesson plans, create informal/formal assessments, and collaborate with another to ensure that standards-based instruction is being implemented in our classroom. After students start the new school year and complete their baseline assessments, I meet with colleagues, data analysis and Washington
In this article it explains that flipping the classroom is where the students prepare for the lesson before class then receive feedback on the lesson. That would give the students time to ask questions. Besides a flipped classroom this article talks a bout the inverted classroom and peer instruction. The students complete worksheets and get to ask questions during class the worksheets are then chosen, at random, to be taken for a grade. Peer instruction is a new technological way for students to interact with each other. The students receive clickers that will anonymously show the answer to the questions, and then in small groups they will discuss the questions. All of these methods tend to work, but according to the article the peer instruction has the best effect on students because they are discussing with their peers.
different layout for the class. After realizing the differences, I asked Mrs. Dillard, "Why is each class layout different?" She replied, " I believe every class is different, and that I, as the teacher, need to conform to their learning style rather than them conform to my teaching style." Once she answered my question, I felt more enlightened about teaching. Always being a student, I have viewed learning from one perspective only, but now I am beginning to see different learning styles and formats from being an education major. In the six classes Mrs. Dillard teaches, she used two tools to teach her students: interactive notebook and PowerPoint.
I am looking forward to find a way to get my students involves with technology from home and to come more prepared for in-depth learning instead of just basic knowledge. Currently, I am just taking this blended class to see what it is like to teach a blended classroom.
Finding resources online is not difficult, however, finding resources that do not demand an abundant amount of time to learn or teach is more daunting. Interactive, live LMS (Learning Management Systems) are working to streamline resources, assignments and grading into a system that is easy to learn and easy to implement. Schoology is one such LMS that allows teachers to add links to assignments from the Internet or a host of other platforms including Google Drive, Kahn Academy and Evernote. In addition, Actively Learn is a program designed to differentiate instruction and facilitate programs such as AVID.
In executing flipped classroom, remembering and understanding as the most minimal levels of cognitive domain are honed outside the class hour (Krathwohl and Anderson, 2001). While in the classroom, the learners concentrated on higher types of intellectual work, including applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. With the flipped model, the lower levels are exhibited before class through recorded lectures and video. Readings, simulations, and different materials also give this foundational support for learning so that in-class time can be spent chipping away at higher levels of learning from application to evaluation. Actualizing flipped learning permits the students to invest more energy supporting higher-level learning tasks,
In addition, to keeping student’s attention the idea of the flipped classroom also lets students lead their learning. “When classroom instruction is lecture-based, students are taught to take guided notes. A disadvantage here is that some students write faster than
Throughout my four years of high school, I have experienced many academic challenges that have changed who I am as a person, peer, and student. At Harrisburg High School, students are given the option to learn in a program called the “MOD/CL” setting. This is a program designed to allow students the chance to develop at a pace that is suited to their ability. With this opportunity, they are required to academically mature and take control of their own learning at a faster pace than others. Aside from the obvious challenges that are not present in the traditional learning setting, students have the great opportunity to deeply explore curriculum in greater depth. All curriculum is online, and students are expected to do assignments at their own
To persuade Washington Barker High School teachers to use novelty pedagogical strategies such as cooperative learning, group dynamic discussions, and journal writing to increase student learning and class participation.
This increase in understanding in the class room and overall school system can be achieved through the implementation of several programs created that target students as well as programs for instructors as well as adding informational posters throughout the school (Weisman et al., 2016, p. 710).
Summary of Study: The “flipped classroom” is a learning model in which content attainment is shifted forward to outside of class, then followed by instructor-facilitated concept application activities in class.
21st century learners are surrounded by technology on a daily basis. According to Blair, these new 21st century learners are highly relational and demand quick access to new knowledge (2012). As teachers, if we don’t keep up with the times, we are going to lose our students. Technology, if used correctly, will help engage our students and provide a much more enriching experience. I am going to meet this need of technology by providing different types of technology and by using the Flipped Learning model. I will use screencasts, videos and various survey/question apps like Socrative to help my students learn at home. I will be incorporating technology into my lessons during class through the tablet and various apps such as SHealth and BAM video app. Students will also get to use pedometers and heart rate monitors. By using different types of
When students hear of the word “flipped learning,” most of the time they have no idea what you are talking about. For example, a peer of mine in the education department, had no idea what I was talking about. Her initial response to my question was, “What exactly is a flipped classroom? Isn’t that when students teach a class?” People, especially in the education field, should be more informed on what a flipped classroom is. In the study done by Schmidt and Ralph, they found that out of the 58 teachers, fifteen were knowledgeable about flipped classrooms whereas 13 were somewhat knowledgeable and 30 were not knowledgeable about the subject. Especially, with technology advancing, flipped classrooms are going to become more popular in the near future. However, most of my fellow classmates in high school went through a flipped classroom. In fact, when I went to interview them, they had completely forgotten or didn’t understand what a flipped classroom was. I found that most people do not understand what a flipped classroom is until you explain it to them.
Schools, teachers, principals and parents are always looking for new and innovative ways for students learning to be successful, engaging, at the same time provide high quality teaching and learning. Technology is becoming more apparent in the 20th century, with schools all over Australia and the world attempting to incorporate technology into classrooms today to provide a high quality of teaching and learning. Disterer, Kleiner, 2013 talk about the benefit of Bringing your own device (BYOD) is the fact that you can use it “Anything, Anywhere, Anytime” with students and teachers having the convenience of not having to constantly save on USB devices and keep switching, with their own device making it
Aaron Sanns and Jonathan Bergman are the first two teachers who use flipped classroom, they provide supplying absent students with an online lecture they could watch from home or from anywhere they had access to a computer and internet including school or local library. They find
