The Impact of Piracy
According to the Motion Pictures Association of America website, A pirate is anyone who sells, acquires, copies or distributes copyrighted materials without permission. Over the past ten years, technology has greatly advanced, and with these technological advances, digital file sharing easier than ever. One aspect of these advances is faster Internet connection, which has made it easier to download large files in the matter of minutes. Whereas in the past majority of people had dial-up Internet services which in most cases the download rate was no more than 10 kilobytes per second. Some Internet providers today offer speeds up to one gigabyte per second, which to put in perspective; a DVD size is usually around 4 gigabytes, so technically someone could download an exact replica of a DVD in a matter of minutes if not seconds. But even in the dial-up era, internet piracy was an issue, where programs such as Napster made it easy for people to share files with people all over the world. Napster, was the first well known peer to peer sharing software where users were able to directly download songs from other users. Napster surfaced in 1999 and most internet users embraced it open arms as they were able to download their favorite songs at the comfort of their home for free. Napster 's reign only lasted about two years, after which the record companies caught on, and noticed that Napster was affecting their sales, and lawsuits
A&M Records vs Napster was one of the biggest copyright infringement cases that later defined the legality of file sharing. It was a class action lawsuit that include over fifteen major record labels including Universal Studios, Warner Bros, and Sony Entertainment. The official case though is called A&M Records vs Napster. A&M Records sued Napster claiming they were infringing on their plaintiff's intellectual property. Napster was a peer to peer file sharing service. It was mostly used to share mp3 music files in mass volumes. This was right at the start of mp3 players. Music was starting to become easily accessible through digital copies.
According to the text A Gift of Fire, Napster “opened on the Web in 1999 as a service that allowed its users to copy songs in MP3 files from the hard disks of other users” (Baase, 2013, p. 192, Section 4.1.6 Sharing Music: The
Great leadership can inspire people and leave a greater mark on those they lead. There are many different ways Shannon Watts and Lady Macbeth can portray leadership and influence many people.. Shannon Watts is a good example of a leader by talking about her personal beliefs and making meaningful changes. Shannon Watts demonstrates leadership by actively taking action and discussing her stance on gun violence. According to Moms Demand Action, “Shannon started a Facebook group with the message that all Americans can and should do more to reduce gun violence” (Meet).
Napster provided users of the system with a platform to facilitate the transmission of digital forms of music files, called MP3 files. Napster’s platform primarily facilitates “peer-to-peer” file sharing, which allows users to present MP3 files stored on their personal computer to other users looking to copy the file, search for particular MP3 files, and transfer
Napster changed the internet forever. “...Napster is considered the pioneer in the music industry…”(American Broadcast Company News). This shows how important Napster was to the music industry. They were the first company ever to be able to stream music through the internet. They were the birth of the online music business. “In the year 2000, a new company called Napster created something of a music fan's utopia—a world in which nearly every song ever
Starting in the year 1999, a company called Napster opened up a whole new world to the Internet where every song ever made was instantly available to you on your computer for free. It was created by an 18-year-old Northeastern University student named Shawn Fanning. Napster transformed personal computers into servers that shared mp3 files all across the Internet (Mayer, 2008). It became popular very quickly because exchanging mp3 files freely and having any music desired right at your fingertips had never been possible before. However, this program that provided the privilege of having free instant music to download did not last long, it was shut down after just two years by
Napster was a music sharing software that was shut down because of copying and distributing unauthorized MP3 files that violated the United States and foreign copyright laws. One of the major reasons why Napster was shutdown is
For the past decade, if you wanted to download copyrighted material and didn 't want to pay for it, it 's likely you turned to “The Pirate Bay”. Up until a police raid it was the most popular place to grab Sunday 's episode of “MSNBC or Power” months before the Blu-ray hits stores (Seppala, 2014). You didn 't have to log in to some arcane message board or know someone to get an invite. The anonymous file-sharing site was open to everybody and made piracy as simple as a Google search. That 's what scared Hollywood.
so Shakespeare paints a picture of Macbeth in the beginning of the play through the words of other characters. They describe him in battle as a fearless leader who led his army into battle killing every enemy insight and viciously murdering a man who is thought of to be a usurper. The actions that Macbeth is being praised for are not worthy of praise, but rather of scorn because of the gruesome ways he killed his foes. The following quote explains how gruesome Macbeth really is. Macbeth is slowly rising himself to power by slaughtering the innocent who have been accused of being guilty.
If we heat soil and water for 10 min and let them cool for 10 min, the soil will heat rapidly and cool slowly, because dark colors absorb a lot of heat. When we heated the materials up, the temperature difference for soil was 6.1 degrees Celsius. The temperature difference for water was 2.4 degrees Celsius. When we let the materials cool for 10 min, the difference in temperature for soil was 3.4 degrees Celsius. The difference in temperature for the water was 0.9 degrees Celsius. My hypothesis was partially correct. While the temperature of the soil increased quickly, the temperature of the soil cooled cooled quicker than the water.
Napster is one of an example about the digital copyright violation that happen around these years. It is one of the first companies that had been charged for Intellectual Property Theft. The company is being sued by many professional artists and their record companies for leaking their musics all over the internet. Napster created an application that allowing their users to access a main server that has an IP address in California. When they gain access to the application, they can look up, views and able to download any piece of those artists at anytime they want to. By doing this, the users do not need to pay to gain access to those pieces of art despite the hard work of many artists. The main problem of sharing information and file on the internet is the idea so new, there are many ways to go with it and they can hide them very well to not get caught.
The day of the dead is known as an extraordinary occasion every year to respect the dead, including gatherings, feasts, unique foods, melodies and parades. To add, in many societies this holiday brings the living and the dead together, for an awesome banquet, to recall the departed and to appease them for one more year. This love towards the spirits is an antiquated and widespread practice, and it proceeds in numerous parts of the world (Guiley, 1956).The Chinese, who glorify their ancestors, perform unique services in spring, summer and autumn to free mankind's two souls: incorporeal and corporeal. The incorporeal soul is requested to express unique thoughts towards the deceased relatives, and the corporeal soul is disheartened from rousing
As Lord Acton once said, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. During the beginning of the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, Old Major, the prize Middle White boar describes the oppression that the animals on Manor Farm have experienced. Old Major goes to foreshadow that a day will come when the animals will overthrow their human masters and build an equitable society. That day does in fact come and the animals cause their previous master, Jones, to flee the farm leading to the farms original name of Manor Farm to be changed to Animal Farm. However, we quickly see that the pigs, by virtue of their leadership of the revolution, quickly become corrupted by the power that they have achieved thus corrupting the primary ideals on animalism.
How can traditional (or old media) enterprises such as film, television and music overcome the threat of online piracy and file sharing?
On January 23, 2003, the world’s leading computer networking equipment maker Cisco Systems, headquartered in San Jose California, filed a lawsuit against China-based Huawei Technologies and its United States subsidiaries Huawei America and FutureWei Technologies. In the lawsuit, Cisco alleged that Huawei stole intellectual property by copying its Internet Operating System (IOS) software and its copyrighted user manuals. Cisco also claimed that Huawei infringed on its patents. After numerous failed attempts to resolve these complaints directly with Huawei, which included a cease and desist letter to one of Huawei’s United Kingdom distributors, Cisco decided that a lawsuit was necessary to
