The Impact Of Community Service On The Community

Volunteerism is a path to responsible citizenship. Volunteering is a form of generous behavior, with a goal of providing help to others, a group, an organization, a cause, or the community at large without expectation of accolades or material reward (Musick, 2008, p 3). Volunteer work encourages good citizenship. It builds trust with others and public institutions. Trusting people are more likely to get involved in leadership positions or even politics. It gets individuals involved by letting them meet a wider range of people, then learning more about local issues and legislation. Volunteer work teaches civic skills, which can then be used in the political arena, and help individuals become aware of social problems needing solutions (p 460-461).

As once said by the Once-ler, from the tale of The Lorax, “Complain all you want, it’s never, ever, ever, ever gonna stop.” This is a strong message of a children’s book but it can impact how every life spends each day. The growing economy is directly linked to industrialization, which is damaging the Earth more and more each day. Industrialization is the rapidly growing spread of business and industries within a region, and can be shown in practically any country on Earth. There are many environmental issues that industrialization has caused but one in particular is our overuse of scarce resources, therefore, nations have responded to this issue by using renewable resources.

Community service is an act of selflessness that grows a caring community. Community only consists on what it’s members are willing to contribute to it. Personally, it is my pristine pride to assist the community in it’s development it into a bountiful place for all.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” (Goodreads). Gandhi was saying that if we want something to change, we have to do it ourselves and show others that we need this change to happen. In Paul Loeb’s, “Soul of a Citizen” he encourages community service because of the important role it plays in community change. “Participation in public life often requires us to confront blindness, shortsightedness, greed, and the will to dominion that theologians call evil. Taking on larger causes sets us up for repeated heartbreak and for anger and frustration when people we hope will respond spurn the most basic appeals to human solidarity” (Loeb 40). Winston Churchill’s quote "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" embodies what community service is really about. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working for several organization and volunteering in a variety of different areas. There has been a community service experience that changed my life tremendously though. From 2009 until 2014 I had the amazing opportunity to work for the Nash-Edgecombe County Teen Court Program and doing so profoundly shaped my future.

    In a community, there is an expectancy that one will contribute to it in some way. Whether it's working or volunteering, both forms of service can better the community one lives in. In my opinion, it is essential for one to contribute to their community in whatever way they can in order to be a truly valued member.

Community service, one of the several pillars outlined by the National Honors Society (NHS), is defined as the desire to work and serve the community in order to improve the conditions for the citizens who dwell in it. Most importantly, those who uphold those standards do so without the need of money, or recognition; they are simply intrinsically motivated to make the world a better place. It wasn’t until I volunteered at an event hosted by the Jubilee Center that I learned the true meaning of community service and charity.

Community Service is a way to help others meet their needs. It is important for people to help their neighbors so a community can be strong and successful. By helping doing community service one can also learn new skills to help enhance one’s education.

What does community service mean? Community service, to me, means bettering the community with volunteering at local places, business, or helping the people themselves. Community services is very important due to most of the things in a community such as parks, food banks, etc. being ran/used by the community.

We are mirrors in the dark, covered in layers of dirt. We each have our own roles to fit into and that includes our contribution to the Earth and our own society. Involvement in community service can help us understand ourselves and see things more clearly. Community service allows us to labor away at the dirt covering us and realize that we can shine more than ever before by deflecting the attention off ourselves and onto someone else for them to glow. In response, the mirror of ourselves, lit by the illumination of others surrounding us so by our service we benefit ourselves and thus, push away the darkness of our own self-centeredness. To me, community service means people conducting voluntary work in order to make a change in a community

“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:

Imagine immigrating to a foreign country where uncertainty and unfamiliarity awaits. That was my family in October 2008 when we arrived in America as refugees, deprived of basic necessities such as food and clothing. We faced difficulties adjusting to the culture and meeting our needs. However, volunteers of all ages from different charities delivered and donated foods, clothing, and presents, and warmly welcomed us with comfort during a time of major adjustment in our lives. They guided my family in our transition as we apply for schools and jobs. Volunteering was also a rare and uncommon practice in my birth country, so the number of volunteers helping us in America made a good impression of the country to my family. As I grew up and attend high school in America, I realized the amazing and endless opportunities for young people to make a difference in other’s lives by feeding the homeless, responding to natural disasters, caring for the elderlies, cleaning the community, saving the lives of animals, and much more. Community service should be required to graduate high school because it provides essential skills, builds character, and promotes higher education for a successful life.

On average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just ‘hours we need to be able to graduate’ and that is it. Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the volunteers

Community service can be defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular are. Community service is normally unpaid work, intended to be of social use, or as a way of not sending an individual to jail or prison, or not paying a ticket. Community service is done normally around a particular area in which you reside in. In a way this can be beneficial to the community, because it is a way for individuals to clean up their own neighborhoods, because who does not want their neighborhoods to look appealing.
