Throughout the entire semester and through my service learning work a lot of what is happening in our society today has been addressed through different themes. In our society today, we see more now than ever how families struggle to even be able to provide basic needs for their own families. It has become harder in America today especially being a minority and struggling with past issues to move forward with life. The housing gap and unfair housing situations that we so often see affect millions of people all across the nation and without working towards change the situations will stay the same. I think this is very important because it is not just people we see in movies or people that we see on the streets, it is people who we would …show more content…
It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar” (13:44). It makes us think that we are so different from theme people when in reality they are just humans like us who have stories of their own. By taking the time to listen to these stories and gaining a deeper understanding for people who are tough situations it only makes us better people. Often as citizens who are comfortable in our environments and experience privilege we often forget that there are others around us who are not as fortunate or people that live very different lifestyles from us. In Between the World and Me Ta-Nehisi Coates writes a letter to his son expressing a sense of fear and a warning of the world that he will soon experience on his own. As he looks around and sees what is going on in the World he can’t help but think about how unfortunate it is and a wave of fear as he recalls back to his own memories growing up. How difficult times were and how he never truly felt as if he belonged on had a place wherever he was, except when he was around people similar to him. It is as if something was between him and the world, which I think we can relate to today’s society,
Another topic that was extremely important to me was the achievement gap between blacks and whites. Being an educated African American woman it’s astonishing to see how far America has come. From not even allowing African Americans to become educated to now having specific scholarships to help African Americans become educated. It’s amazing to see how each case such as learning about the different cases such as: Plessey vs. Ferguson, brown vs. board of education, and many other cases that have set precedents in order for me to be attending and succeeding at division one University.
In the book The World and Me by Ta-Nehisis Coates he reveals to the audience the life struggle us African Americans go through on the day to day bases. Coates writings are meant to open peoples eyes about whats really going on in America, Why'll at the same time prepare his son for the world we live in. The purpose of this essay is to conduct a rhetorical analysis on Ta- Nehisi Coates. Between the world and me in regard to his usage of ethos, pathos and logos to unveil the ongoing effect that racism continues to play in our society.
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is a book that demands attention in today 's society where racism and hostility towards the black community are still very common. The book is written in the form of a letter to Coates’s son where he examines the black body and how it is viewed in the world by white americans. Coates gives insight into relevant social justice issues such as Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin and provides an intense reality depicting the life of those in the black community. Coates describes his life growing up and explains the ever changing realizations he comes to regarding the black body as he grows and develops. He takes the readers on a journey through his experiences and education, allowing us to directly see his opinions regarding the black body develop and reshape over time. Coates focuses in on his different forms of education and how they influenced his opinions on power and freedom of the black body. Ultimately through his life experiences and education Coates realizes that the black body can be viewed as simultaneously powerful and powerless within society.
For the students lacking the privilege/benefits of status and wealth should not give up trying and not settle for less. The people that are low privilege should keep their heads up and work hard every day and prove to everyone else that because they come from a poorer community and their parents living pay to check to paycheck just to make it they deserve the right to be successful in life. There are a lot of success stories that come from low privilege home. For me I was from a low privilege home I didn’t have much growing up. I worked every day a to prove to myself that you are somebody special and I work hard every day to get where I’m at now.
The book, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, is written as a letter to his son. Coates cuts into the experience of the father as advice too the son. He writes this letter to his son to educate and awaken his son to the logic of white supremacy and the obstacles he will face as a black man this world. However, Ta-Nehisi’s son isn’t the only audience. He exposes the readers too the effect of racism on Black America, from history until present day. The purpose of this essay is to conduct a rhetorical analysis on Ta-Nehisi Coates’, Between the World and Me regarding his usage of ethos, pathos and logos to unveil the ongoing effect of the system of racism that continues to cause major problems to our society.
Since the end of the Second World War, the housing market had blossom throughout the nation. Thousands of the American people and veterans were able to finance a home; however, there were many who were not given the same or equal opportunities. In A Matter of Place, the documentary argued that people are still facing housing discrimination in the U.S. Housing discrimination persist because a couple were denied housing due to their race and a man was solely harassed based on his sexual orientation.
Promised a helping hand, security, and affordable living, residents of Chicago’s public housing soon found themselves in dilapidated, drug-infested, crime-filled, isolated centers of despair. During a time in which most American citizens could easily turn their eyes from the struggles of the poor, Sudhir Venkatesh’s Gang Leader for a Day took readers into the depths of the world in which the poor resided. Through Venkatesh’s work, readers are inadvertently introduced to broader sociological concepts such as, collective efficacy within communities, the concentration effect, recurring themes of morality, and the underlying power of race, class, and gender as it related to the crime that took place during Venkatesh’s ethnographic like research.
This made me realize that no matter how bad we perceive our lives to be, if we continue to believe in God, family and ourselves, and not let any of life’s trials define us, we will survive; just like the trees of the Sierra forest. This reading showed me that not only do people have their own personal ongoing battles, but all living creatures share that same endless struggle for existence.
One topic that blew my mind and that really caught my attention, was the topic about children living in the poverty. I learned that poverty can affect the functioning of the family system, placing all aspects of development at risk in several ways. Children learn their language skills, social skills, ethics skills, and everything about life from their families. When a family slips into poverty, parents aren’t so involved with their children, nor physically or
Affordable housing in the United States describes sheltering units with well-adjusted housing costs for those living on an average, median income. The phrase usually implies to applied rental or purchaser housing within the financial means of lower-income ranges specific to the demographics of any given area. However, affordable housing does not include those living in social housing owned by government and non-profit organizations. More specifically, the targeted range for housing affordability sets below 30 percent of a household's annual income, including all applicable taxes, utility costs and home owners insurance rates. If the mean income per household breaches the 30 percent mark, then the agreed status becomes labeled as
Poverty can affect housing, which is basic need to everyone including children (Chidren’s Defense Fund, 2008; Poverties Organization, 2013; Unnatural Causes, 2008). Shelter is highly detrimental to the survival of all human beings. Families suffering from poverty are most likely to have poor quality or temporal housing (Horgan, 2007). Such families are also likely to have frequent relocation from one city to another in search of places that will suit their economic status. However, These movements may interfere with development of established neighborhood and social interaction causing antisocial behavior among children (Horgan, 2007; Poverties Organization, 2013). Moreover, the continuity of childcare and education are the worst affected leading
In “Between the World and Me,” this novel is opened up to show that he, the author, is writing to his son to warn him about a few things that he might encounter throughout life. It seems like the common theme in this novel is Racism. I personally think that he wants to tell his son about racism in America. Racism was mentioned throughout pages 1-9 and I think one reason for this is because it seems like the author has encountered racism, in America. This is probably a theme in this book that that author would like to share with his son because it might be one thing that he thinks about the most when he hears people asking him about his body.
The lack of affordable housing in the United States is a problem that doesn 't receive nearly the attention that it necessitates. This absence of affordable housing became especially prevalent following World War II when suburbanization spread across the country like wildfire. Although the sheer number of homes increased, Jim Crow segregation influenced housing policy, meaning that white institutions prevented blacks from obtaining the mortgages needed to afford such homes. Therefore, rather than accept subprime loans, which often result in foreclosure, many black people have been pigeonholed into paying exorbitant rates for dilapidated rental properties located in inner-cities, thereby creating the affordable housing problem. Although the situation seems bleak, with careful planning and execution, we can solve the affordable housing problem. Specifically, my proposal involves the following two components: the government must first revise and draft three forms of legislation that create strict yet concise standards that landlords must follow, and then allocate federal funding to health and wellness programs within poor communities. By examining the contributing societal factors to the lack of affordable housing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then implementing the proposal mentioned above, one could potentially solve the affordable housing problem there and transpose the plan to other impoverished cities across the country.
136). While many people will probably overlook the main message of this parable, to our group, we found that it had taught us to be more aware of those less fortunate around us. Meaning, we act more graciously with what we have, because we easily take for granted what many people are not blessed with. One of the most important aspects we took away from this parable is that social status and material possessions are no guarantee of ones standing with God. The only thing that matters is a right response to the Word of God. While an individual can sit there and say, “Of course I would extend a helping hand to someone who is suffering”, they say this when they already have all of the materials they need. But, if you were to ask someone to help the poor who were also suffering, a large majority will say no. A large challenge of life is putting others needs in front of your own, however people who hold faith in God are always willing to try and help in any way that they can. God has led His people through the worst and harshest conditions and through the hatred of many people, but His faith was never waiving. This allows individuals the comfort of knowing that even through the hardest times, God will be there for you and take care of you, as long as you hold faith in
Because the program targets at homeless families’ population, they are both men and women. The analysis of CVA to this program has no significant influence on gender difference when both men and women facing housing crisis and entering in the program.
