The conflict is highlighted in the episodes where Gandalf, the dwarves, and Bilbo fight against the many terrors of Middle Earth. Through fights with goblins, trolls, wargs and the Battle of Five Armies, it is seen that good always prevails over evil. The first encounter is with trolls. The first evil that Bilbo and the dwarves come across is the trolls. Tolkien sets the reader up by saying that trolls and dwarves have a history of not getting along. Here they encounter Smaug, the object of their journey. Smaug in The Hobbit is the epitome of evil, as he kills relentlessly and all he lives for is greed and the treasures that he cannot use. Bilbo and the dwarves don’t actually kill Smaug. Bilbo makes him angry and Smaug decides to take it out on the people of Esgaroth. He terrorizes them until a man named Bard shoots him and kills him. News of Smaug’s death gets out and many races come to get the treasure hidden in Smaug’s lair. Among these are the Wood elves, and goblins and Wargs - which really only come to get revenge and kill the dwarves because they killed the Great Goblin. Thorin sends word to his cousin and requests and army to help him fight off the people that want to “steal” his gold. The men and elves and dwarves are about to wage war on each other in front of the mountain when Gandalf shouts that the goblins are coming. Everyone forgets their quarrel about gold and jewels and join together to fight the goblins and wargs in a final battle of Good and Evil. This battle is later referred to the Battle of the Five Armies. In the end Good prevails over Evil and the goblins and wargs are killed and middle earth is freed of their wickedness. Bilbo returns to his peaceful home under the hill and the Lonely Mountain is returned to its original glory. There clearly is Good and Evil in Tolkien's world.
At the beginning of the adventure, Bilbo was a timid, little hobbit with no idea how to steal or survive outside of his little hobbit hole. When Thorin and the rest of the dwarves first meet Bilbo, they question
Bard sends out two messengers to note a peace treaty but Thorin declines that is until, they show the heart of Arkenstone. Then, Bilbo reveals what he had done, making Thorin angry, but before he could attack Bilbo, Gandalf reveals himself. Thorin makes an agreement to give the fourteenth part of the treasure to get the stone back. Although Thorin agrees, he waits until his army comes and get the stone by force first. When his army comes, Gandalf stops the beginning of war and revealing that the goblins and Wargs were joining too. This results to the Battle of Five Armies meaning that the dwarves, elves, and the townspeople against the goblins and Wargs. The battles begins and ends when the eagles come to join, tho Bilbo could not see what
The first major encounter was the trolls. While scouting ahead, Bilbo was caught by trolls and soon the dwarves were caught too but the wizard Gandalf saved them. Then came their second major encounter. “Out jumped the goblins, big goblins, great ugly-looking goblins, lots of goblins, before you could say rocks and blocks.” Next was goblin trouble, while sleeping they were attacked and dragged underground to see the leader of the goblins. The dwarves managed to escape but the hobbit was left behind. While trying to escape he met Gollum, a trickster creature that loved riddles. After finding Gollum’s magic ring that makes the one who wears it invisible, Bilbo barely escapes the goblin’s lair and meets up with the dwarves, earning some respect from the dwarves. But they were in the safe zone
Bilbo the Hobbit, persuaded by an old wizard named Gandalf, to set out on a quest with thirteen militant dwarves. Seized by a self-assured, fire-breathing dragon named Smaug, the dwarves went on a challenging adventure to reclaim their kingdom, retrieve back the gold that was kept inside the palace, and defeat Smaug for good. Along the way, Bilbo found a magical ring and was able to turn invisible, which is a very useful technique for rescuing the dwarves. They manage to pass many obstacles and met different types of villains. At the end, Bilbo and the dwarves did not go up against Smaug, instead Bard the Bowman from Lake-men defeated Smaug and after that the Battle of the Five Armies began.
Along the way they encounter great dangers and various characters such as wood-elves, goblins, mystical creatures, trolls, humans, etc. And they have to fight their way through the many conflicts that they come upon. And Bilbo must find a way to help them overcome the complications that they face in their quest. The hobbit uses his common sense and his magical ring to get the gang out of sticky situations. But as well as the disputes that they endure, they also gained many friends and aid throughout their journeys through the forests. And with the help of their friends they were able to make it through the entire journey.
Because Bilbo didn't know them so he didn't want to help them and go on an adventure with them. And more and more dwarfs showed up at his door and messed up his house for dinner. But then they cleaned it up really nice and fast. But Bilbo doesn't want to go because he does not like taking risks and they told him that he might not come back and that it is very dangerous the next morning he decided to go on the adventure and help them, so he took a risk on that to get what they
“Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay.” Gandalf claims in the quote above from The Hobbit that great power isn’t always necessary to accomplish great feats. If ordinary people can work as a team, the outcome can defeat an individual with great power. Bilbo and the dwarves assisted each other, and got help from other sources in order to accomplish their goal and grow as characters. This teamwork and growth is shown throughout the scenes of Rivendell, Mirkwood, and with Smaug.

This shows that he is so confident that he will be able to answer Gollum’s next
Meals will not come as often, he is sleeping on the forest floor, and he has a lot of challenges he faces. Bilbo has many allies that help him on his missions, such as all thirteen dwarfs, Gandalf, and Beorn, a shapshifter that help the fifthteen of them with a conflict later in the book. Along with allies, the hobbit faces many enimies during the adventure. Some enimies as small as the spiders, and elves they face to the dragon, smaug. "[The goblins] could not find Bilbo...slipping in and out of the shadow of the trees, running quick and quiet, and keeping out of the sun; so soon they went back grumbling and cursing to gaurd the door.
Greed is a common, yet detrimental factor in society today. All around the world people experience this type of attribute, whether it is for power or for the simple concept of desiring more in life. In order to further this prevalent theme, Peter Jackson created the film The Hobbit-Desolation of Smaug, in 2013. In this film, he continued the adventure of Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves and set them off to reclaim their ancient dwarven city guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Throughout the entire movie, the characters face many tough obstacles, those being orcs, elves and most importantly the evil dragon. Those elves actually came to their rescue later on in the movie, proving their loyalty. Those noble elves were Tauriel and Legolas. Also, a major character in the movie was Gandalf, which was the powerful wizard. In the movie, he aided in their adventure by leading them to the proper trail while also providing them with many struggles they may encounter on the way. While all of the characters and setting play a key role in shaping the movie as a whole, the theme of greed is a much greater aspect throughout the film. Peter Jackson implements personification, symbolism, and foreshadowing in his movie in order to point his audience towards the bigger message, greed is the root of all evil.
Bilbo uncovers things about himself that he didn't even know possibly existed within him. In the cliché theme of 'good versus evil', Bilbo, without question, automatically jumps to the 'good' side. In his character, there are no uncertain borders, as there are in the temperaments of the dwarves. From the beginning to the end he stays an honourable and honest hobbit,
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
The quest begins when the group meets at the Green Dragon Inn. From there they venture into the Lone-lands. As heavy rains begin to fall, Bilbo notices that Gandalf is missing. This is something that is later on considered to be normal because Gandalf comes and goes throughout the duration of the trip. All through the quest Bilbo ends up saving the party from many dangerous situations. This is something that at first Bilbo finds hard to believe because he has very low self-esteem. The group always seems to find themselves in worse, and worse problems, but they always overcome these problems, with the help of Bilbo and some times Gandalf. Some of these problems include: getting caught by trolls, getting captured by goblins, being attacked by large wolves called Wargs, one of the dwarves falls into a coma from touching black water in the Mirkwood Forest, nearly dying of starvation, being captured by large spiders and being captured by wood-elves. Although this is all very good action, the real action begins when the party finally reaches their destination- Lonely Mountain (home of Smaug).
The story starts from the side of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts as a nervous & annoyed host. He is hobbit, & his folk are reserved, but kind & carefree. Hobbits love to accommodate company when the time arrives, but this night Bilbo was in a ruck. Spontaneously, 13 dwarves & Gandalf tediously trickled through the door in groups & demanded dinner. Bilbo was not expecting these unknown & unplanned visitors, especially the grand total of 14! They ate & sang all night, while little time was devoted to business, which was planned that night. Bilbo was exhausted, unpleased, & unaffiliated with the pressing event they gathered to discuss. He was only aware that Gandalf selected him to be the Burglar of the party, which just so happened to be a vast journey across Middle-Earth. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the start of a haunting tale, which Bilbo would never overlook. The first prominent issue Bilbo had to resolve the trolls. The group utilized this to test Bilbo’s strength, courage, brains, & stealth. Throughout the story, Bilbo continues to earn his spot among the dwarves, while the party is continually slammed with additional problems, however, everyday & every challenge reveals more of the nature of the dwarves & of Bilbo. With his role concluded & the Battle of Five Armies won, the yearning for home was too much to bear. Bilbo decided to travel home & achieve his part in the adventure of a lifetime. Each dwarf had grown quite fond of Bilbo, for the journey wouldn’t have been a success without their Burglar. The travel home was bittersweet & was a wonderful memoir of his quest. Gandalf accompanied him all the way to his Hobbit Hole on the Hill in Bag-End. Can we label Bilbo a hero? If so, what kind of hero is he? Is he a hero in history or in the eyes of the dwarves? Was Bilbo a savior for the descendants to come or the
