When the eccentric hobbit Bilbo Baggins leaves his home in the Shire, he gives his greatest treasure to his heir Frodo: a magic ring that makes its wearer invisible. Because of the difficulty Bilbo has in giving the ring away, his friend the wizard Gandalf the Grey suspects that the ring is more than it appears. Some years later, Gandalf reveals to Frodo that the ring is in fact the One Ring, forged by Sauron the Dark Lord thousands of years before to enable him to dominate and enslave all of Middle-earth. Gandalf tells Frodo that the Ring must be destroyed to defeat Sauron's evil, but he also warns him that the Enemy has learned of the Ring's whereabouts from the creature Gollum and will seek to find it and kill its bearer. Despite the danger and hopelessness of the quest, Frodo accepts the burden and resolves to take the Ring to the safety of the elven stronghold of Rivendell.
Frodo sets off with three companions, fellow hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam. After a series of close calls and misadventures, where they are saved only by the timely intervention of the mysterious Tom Bombadil, they reach the town of Bree. The innkeeper delivers a letter from Gandalf recommending a weather-beaten Ranger known as Strider as their guide to the elves. Strider

Even if they did not have Sauron to fear, Saruman the White, once the wisest of the wizards, has allied himself with the Enemy and seeks the Ring for himself. When they attempt to cross the pass of Caradhras, an unnatural snowstorm nearly buries them, and they are forced to turn back. Finally, they resolve to brave the perilous dwarven Mines of Moria, now overrun by orcs and even darker things. Within Moria, Gollum begins following them. When the nine have nearly found their way out, they are attacked by orcs and a Balrog, a terrible demon. Gandalf holds it back so that the party can escape, but then he falls with it into the
Bilbo the Hobbit, persuaded by an old wizard named Gandalf, to set out on a quest with thirteen militant dwarves. Seized by a self-assured, fire-breathing dragon named Smaug, the dwarves went on a challenging adventure to reclaim their kingdom, retrieve back the gold that was kept inside the palace, and defeat Smaug for good. Along the way, Bilbo found a magical ring and was able to turn invisible, which is a very useful technique for rescuing the dwarves. They manage to pass many obstacles and met different types of villains. At the end, Bilbo and the dwarves did not go up against Smaug, instead Bard the Bowman from Lake-men defeated Smaug and after that the Battle of the Five Armies began.
He is aided by an elf to be brought to the kingdom of Rivendell. When the ring is delivered, the council attempts to decide who should carry the ring to Mordor to destroy it once and for all, and Frodo volunteers to carry it, thus creating the fellowship of the ring, with his volunteers, who vow to protect and aid Frodo in his almost impossible quest. Frodo realizes his heroicness, and his true destiny in himself in this novel, such as courage in danger, wit against opponents, and perseverance to complete his task. He also must evolve mentally, to carry the burden of the ring of power, must adapt as he carries it, to its effects, responsibilities, and consequences. Also, in the end, Frodo volunteers to take the ring to Mordor to be destroyed, which really ends up showing how he has evolved or really taken a
The ring makes him invisible, but he doesn’t know that yet. He then comes across a little shriveled up hobbit named Gollum. He knows the way out of the cave so he made a bet with Bilbo. If you can beat me in a game of riddles I will show you the way out, but if I win I get to eat you. Bilbo bravely accepts his challenge. Bilbo then wins the challenge by pure luck. “What have I got in my pocket?” (Tolkein, 78) That was his last riddle that Gollum didn’t get. Gollum gets mad and thinks Bilbo is trying to trick him. He then puts on the ring. Gollum then goes to the exit of the cave unknowingly followed by Bilbo. Bilbo then jumps over Gollum and out the door. He was very brave to face Gollum.
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo is given the ring by his father, Bilbo, who had carried though adventures of his own. Gandalf, being a family friend, is over in the Shire, home to the hobbits.
After this they start traveling once again. When they approach Misty Mountains, they take shelter in a cave to let the storm overhead pass. While they are waiting for the storm to pass they get captured by the Great Goblin but can escape thanks to Gandalf. On their way out, Bilbo trips and loses his consciousness. When he wakes up he tries to make his way out of the cave once again, but he finds a ring that he eventually pockets. After he pocketed the ring he encounters Gollum, who is a murderous creature who kills and eats goblins and those who wonder in the caves. During this encounter Bilbo exchanges riddles with Gollum and even gives Gollum an easy riddle to buy himself more time to think of a trickier riddle. This shows that he is so confident that he will be able to answer Gollum’s next
After beginning his adventure, Bilbo faces one of his most difficult challenges in The Hobbit when Bilbo Baggins faces the Inmost cave stage he fights with Gollum in the cave. Holmes describes the Inmost Cave as “the abyss. This is the greatest challenge that faces the hero” (Holmes). This stage is literally in a dark cave, one that provides a morally challenging and terrifying experience for Bilbo. In the cave, he deals with the Gollum and finds the Ring, changing his character forever. Only once he suffers through his riddle battle with Gollum, he recovers The Ring, a ring that grants its wearer invisibility as they wear the Ring. Bilbo has to deal with a moral dilemma when he must face Gollum and must decide on whether or not to kill Gollum. While in the cave with Gollum, Bilbo put on the Ring, which make him invisible and had to deal with what to do about Gollum in Bilbo’s panic and terrified state: “Bilbo almost stopped breathing, and went stiff himself. He was desperate. He must get away, out of this horrible darkness, while he had any strength left. He must fight. He must stab the foul thing, put its eyes out, kill it. It meant to kill him” (Tolkien 86). He was forced to lose some of his innocent and face the reality of life and death situations. For this difficult battle in the cave, Dorothy Matthews reported in The Psychological Journey of Bilbo Baggins, “In this underground scene he must face an important trial; he must make a decision whose outcome will be a
Frodo's willingness to face even greater dangers clearly demonstrates that his courage continues to grow. Frodo once again shows his constant growth of courage during the journey through the Mines of Moria. When the Fellowship is venturing in the Mines of Moria, they run into a large group of orcs. As one of the orcs tries to break into the room that the Fellowship is trapped in, Boromir strikes at the arm of the orc. Although Boromir is a powerful warrior, his sword does nothing and slips from his hands. After Boromir fails to harm the orc, "Suddenly, and to his own surprise, Frodo felt a hot wrath blaze up in his heart. ̒ The Shire! ̓ he cried, and springing beside Boromir, he stooped , and stabbed with Sting at the hideous foot" (364). Consequently, Frodo's courage overpowers Boromir's brute strength. Furthermore, Frodo's attack on an individual orc causes his courage to grow strong enough to fight against a hoard of orcs. After Frodo and the Fellowship kill thirteen orcs, the rest of the orcs temporarily run away giving time for the Fellowship to escape. Following the Council of Elrond and the journey through the Mines of Moria, Frodo's courage becomes more natural, thus revealing that Frodo's courage is near full growth.
In The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien uses the hobbit hole, the ring, and the treasure hoard to act as a symbol for Bilbo Baggins’ story arch as the main character. Bilbo’s journey through middle earth from his home in Bag End, to finding the ring in Gollum’s cave, and all the way to Smaug’s treasure, shows how someone’s personality can shift, grow, or completely change through their life experiences. In the first part of the story, the wizard named Gandalf shows up at Bilbo’s home with thirteen dwarves and their future king, Thorin. They needed a thief to go on an adventure with to steal back the gold that the dragon Smaug had taken from the dwarves.
Through many exploits battling enemies and making friends, Bilbo and company get to the Lonley Mountain, where Smaug lives. Bilbo manages to anger Smaug, causing Smaug to terrorize a village. While Smaug is terrorizing, he is shot down in the one spot he does not have armour, by one of the villagers in the village by Smaug’s mountain, called Bard. Then, through a disagreement on the Dragon’s treasure, a war broke out, called the Five Armies, in which Bilbo is knocked out. During this war, Fili and Kili, two main dwarves, die protecting Thorin, who gets shot anyway, but in the end, the dwarves win this battle. Later, Bilbo wakes up and talks to Thorin for a bit, but because of his arrow, Thorin dies. So then Bilbo leaves with Gandalf to go home and live a peaceful life, in which Gandalf leaves, but then comes to visit every so
Bilbo Baggins- Bilbo seems to be a bit afraid of adventures and having different views than most hobbits have. Although Bilbo struggles with differences, he still has an adventurous side which makes him curious of the quest Gandalf and the dwarves speak of.
Bilbo won the riddle off, but Gollum does not keep his promise and searches for his lost magic ring. Luckily, Bilbo found Gollum’s ring and turns invisible with it. Bilbo finds a passage and escapes Gollum and the goblins. Bilbo was smart and clever in this situation. The hobbit finds Gandalf and the dwarfs. Meanwhile, ferocious wolves called Wargs obtain and pursue them. They are rescued by eagles and the shape-shifted man-bear named
Frodo had never encountered such a big threat before and it really portrays how his courage has grown throughout his perilous journey. Frodo helped to defeat the troll before he was stabbed in his chest. They left the chamber, running for the Bridge of Khazad-dum because the Balrog was on their tracks. This was one of Frodo’s major grievances because Gandalf fell while confronting Durin’s Bane to save Frodo and the Ring. Frodo grieved from his loss of Gandalf journeyed further to the kingdom of Lothlorien. Frodo offered Lady Galadriel the One Ring because he no longer wants to carry the burden of such an evil. It relates to how Frodo was before when Gandalf explained to Frodo what the Ring was. Frodo wanted nothing to do with it, so he offered it to Gandalf, but he denied it. Much like Gandalf, Lady Galadriel also resisted the urge to take the One Ring. In the end, it comes down to how much courage a Hobbit can
First, Bilbo is selfless. He shows this to be true during many troubles on this journey. As he travels with twelve dwarves and a wizard, who has now left them, through many lands, their journey brings them to Mirkwood, a very large, dark wood with many dangerous and horrifying creatures. In this forest, the company encounters giant spiders and the dwarves are captured and wrapped in spider silk, while Bilbo hides by using a magical ring that he had found earlier in their travels. He then uses his sword to fight the beasts and save his friends. After this, they notice that Thorin, the king of the dwarves, was missing. They searched for him and the path which they had lost before their quarrel with the spiders. Then, Wood elves with bows and swords surrounded them and captured all but Bilbo, for he had once again used his ring to ‘disappear’. The elves took the dwarves to their palace and locked them away in the king’s dungeon, where Thorin was also.
Bilbo encountered Gollum in a cave located in the depths of the Misty Mountains near Goblin-town. Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk. He wasn’t just a test, but also an enemy of Bilbo. Gollum had a riddle battle with Bilbo, which both Bilbo and Gollum would have to solve alternatively. If Bilbo wins, Gollum would tell him the way out. Prior to that, Bilbo obtained the Ring; this Ring helps Bilbo escape from Gollum. Gollum called the Ring his “birthday present.” Gollum realizes that Bilbo stole the ring, and would get it back at any cost. Bilbo didn’t know what the ring did until he wore it, it made him invisible. Bilbo quickly escaped and found the way out. But he didn’t realize there were goblins. Bilbo also eluded them, but little he knew, the dwarves were there too. He finally reunited with the dwarves and Gandalf; they were so pleased to see he was alive. When Bilbo told his mates about how him being a young hobbit, succeeded to escape Gollum. Everyone began to praise him. The dwarves started to respect him a great deal more after he said to them that he dodged all the guards and escaped Gollum. This test showed Bilbo how
Aragorn, also known as Strider, is a friend of Gandalf and as such, knows that Frodo carries the ring. Aragorn is instrumental in helping the hobbits reach Rivendell. Without him, the hobbits would have gotten murdered in their sleep at Bree. Aragorn insists that they not sleep in the hobbit rooms, but instead sleep in a dining room. When they go to their room the next morning, they find it trashed and the beds where the hobbits were to have slept ripped to shreds. Aragorn also guides them through the wilderness, helping them navigate towards Rivendell. When the Black Riders catch up with them and give Frodo a dangerous cut, Aragorn is able to find a plant to soothe the pain and help Frodo continue on to Rivendell. The hobbits would have met a rather untimely ends without Aragorn to guide and advise them on their
