The Help is a movie that was based in the early 1960s of Jackson, Mississippi that gave us the perspective of how the lifestyle of white families were but also the roles of the maids who worked for those families. In addition, the African Americans households were present as well. Throughout the movie, 63 out of 97 psychology themes list we received in class were displayed and shown through the characters who played in the movie. Three out of those ninety-seven stood out the most in my perspective, which was consciousness, violence, and racism. Not only was this film informative in a way but it also was an eye-opener to people who clearly didn’t know what was clearly happening or happened during this time period.
Consciousness
Consciousness refers to your individual awareness of your unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations, and environment. Your conscious experiences are

During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights and the Jim Crow Laws were a huge part of the African Americans. The maids weren’t allowed to use the white household bathrooms, or consequences would be have taken in place. This quote,“Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, we are just two people. Not that much separates us.” is clearly stating that African Americans and white Americans are same human beings, just that their skin color is different. There really isn’t a difference other than the fact on how they could have been raised, or what environment they surround themselves with, and possibility the motivation they have that gets them through life because nobody has the same thought on life. Another quote being said in The Help, “Everybody know colored people and white people ain't the same. But we still just people.”, is referring that they may not have some of the same characteristics or traits of one another but they are still people over all and that isn’t much of a
For my film/documentary analysis paper, I chose the movie The Help. This movie was actually originally a book written by Kathryn Stockett, but then in 2011, a screenplay was written and directed by Tate Taylor. I selected this film because it directly relates to some of the topics we talk about in class. Some of them being segregation and discrimination. In society today, segregation and discrimination play a huge role in how minorities are perceived. I wanted to find a film that showed the effect
Film Analysis Psychology 280 Film Analysis of The Help Based off of Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel, The Help is a movie told from an African American’s point of view during the early 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi. The three main characters include, Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson, and Eugenia (Skeeter) Phelan. Skeeter is a young writer who has recently returned from the University of Mississippi. She has been advised by the Elaine Stein, who is the head editor at Harper & Row, to write about a topic
The movie “The Help”, about a young woman who wants to interview black maids during the 1960’s and make their stories into a book to show others what the miserable life of the maids was like, the process of this wasn’t easy for them because of laws and the fear of getting caught. Throughout the movie you will also see the struggles and disrespect that the maids would have to go through almost daily, this affected them but also their children in ways. From this small explanation you can tell this
The Help is a film based off of a novel that represents a narrative about African American’s working in Caucasians homes during the 1960’s in the South. The main character Skeeter, played by Emma Stone, returns to this town and interviews several African American women that’s role has been being the help for white families their entire lives. Skeeter discovers many different race, class and gender complications throughout the film that is significant to analyze. First, the stereotypes of gender
‘The Help’ is a popular film created by the well-known director Tate Taylor. The film follows Skeeter Phelan a girl who has big dreams that have always been limited by society. The film was set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960’s where racial segregation and hatred was at its peak. The film leads you through this era and the struggles that come with it to send a warning to the readers about what is to come. Skeeter Phelan in my mind could only be described in one word strong. She was strong
The Help Review Racism was and still is a very prevalent problem, especially in African-American communities. The Help, a novel by Kathryn Stockett, represented racism in the 1960s very well. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a film by Tate Taylor. The Help is a touching and well-written film, that is in some ways better than the book. In general, the film The Help would not have been as successful as it was if it did not have a solid plot line. The movie revolves around the racial issues
The name of the film is “The Help.” The leading actresses are Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Ahna O'Reilly and Allison Janney. The main point of the movie is for African-American maids to tell their story of how it was working for Caucasian people. The maids, Aibileen and Minny were portrayed by
One of the best-selling books and the film ‘The Help’ is very closely relevant to the untold stories of African-American women and their experience in service to the white women – part of the narrative of civil rights and segregation in America. The Help is less about the undermined black servants than it is about the white sympathizers, extremely close to missing the point entirely. The civil rights movement was vast and complicated and included African-Americans and white people as heroes, If the
The Help is a drama set in Jackson, Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. The film focuses on the development of Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a young, aspiring Anglo American author trying to find her way in the world of writing. After becoming closer acquainted with Aibileen, an African-American maid employed by her peer Elizabeth Leefolt, Skeeter becomes more aware of the racist attitudes that white Americans in her community have towards ‘black’ Americans. After successfully
The Help: A Voice for Stifled Heroes In the midst of the Civil Rights of the radical 1960s, segregation persisted very strongly in the South. While a few prominent Civil Rights activists, such as the marches of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the bus protests of Rosa Parks, made their mark on public television and national sentiment, the story of the more common, silent, domestic workers — the “help” — goes largely untold until the publication of Kathryn Stockett’s book and the subsequent movie, The
The movie “The Help” gives many examples of psychological guides and themes and how it correlates with our class studies, this research paper is going to describe which topics and themes find to be the most important of the film. In my paper, I will be describing how Cecilia's drinking could be causing her prenatal baby to be a miscarriage and what might have happened with the baby, and to tell the the trauma behind losing so many children to her prone drinking. This paper will also be describing
and housing and the right to be free from racial discrimination. In the film “The Help”, it gives us a better view of race, class, and gender inequality in the South where these issues were extensive and deep seated. Segregation of blacks and whites was a socially accepted way of life in the South during the early 1960’s. This violated the appeals we follow in day today, making it ethical. Throughout the movie, it provided examples of legal authority for the separate but equal treatment of
In the movie The Help, there are many characters portrayed and all of them follow their own set of motives to reach their goals. The movie, to me, appears to be the cliche white shaming movie, and the creators are obviously left wing and want to preach the left wing status and show the struggles we no longer face. Before I get into my character and categories I would like to discuss Left and Right Wing. Left Wing typically believes that the government should have the utmost power and they are usually
I watched the movie award winning move The Help. This movie takes place in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s. This was a time period of lots of racial discrimination and gender discrimination right in the middle of the civil rights movement. The story line of The Help is about a young women named Skeeter, who aspires to be big New York City writer. She get a job at a local news paper and on the side decided to secretly interview the black maids (The Help) about their different stories, experiences
During the 1960s, in Jacksonville, Mississippi, the movie “The Help” depicts a time when racial segregation was culturally acceptable and blacks were viewed as an inferior race. The focus of the movie is the life of the “colored help”, the details of their everyday work environment, and the impact on their white employer’s lives. The help is represented as community of black women, who work as maids ultimately raising the children of their upper class white employers. The irony of this is the same
