The article " The Heart of Service" reminds us of our constitutional rights as citizens of the United States. We are not obligated to serve, but we do it because it is our hearts desire to help others and contributes to our country. Helping people without abligation, can bring a much more sense of fulfillment than when forced. As it was said in the article " The Importance of Service" , "service to others is an obligation" yes we all have and obligation to serve others and help our country, but I would have to agree with what the article " The heart of Service" said. "Mandotory service would turn generosity into obligation and goes against our constitutional rights". Therefore, " The Importance of Service" faild to point out that passing
Serving others is something that was passed down to me by father. He taught me that if we are blessed to be fortunate then we should help those that
I think that citizenship and service are linked in a way. I think that to be a good citizen and properly fulfill your role, you have to help out in the community. I do my part at school by doing what teachers ask of me, always being respectful, and by taking the time to do things the right way such as putting things in the right bins at the end of lunch. I also serve my community by doing community service hours and by picking up litter. I do community service hours by organizing food drives, volunteering at a food bank, and by helping out in a community garden. I help out in this garden by watering it, and I also take the food from it to Friendship Trays.
To me “Not To be served, but to serve” means to put others needs before your own. Service seems to almost be necessary once someone appreciates all that has been done for them. In my case, I have already begun to give back to community which has already given me so much to me. Three years ago I joined a club called the Jr. Civitans. Junior Civitan is a student-led service organization for middle and high school students. The club has a special focus on helping people with developmental disabilities. Throughout the year, we do multiple fundraisers that benefit the special education students at my high school. Some of these events include a Haunted Forest, a Spaghetti Dinner, and a Prom Dress fashion show. The club really emphasizes the focus
“One of the most beautiful things that I can do for you – or that any one of us can do for another – is to serve each other. It’s one of the most human things. It’s one of the most basic things. But you do that from the heart. You do that because you want to connect with somebody. ‘Service, not Servitude’ is something that should never be lost.” - Charlie Trotter (1. http://www.thetrotterproject.org/about)
In "Serve or Fail," Dave Eggers argues that college should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation. Eggers gives us some purpose of college education to link with volunteering that help students getting beneficial effects. He gave some good points in terms of helping others out. He explains that college is too short to sit back and become the best foosball player and waste your time with no commitments to any after school obligations, etc. I think that everyone should be able to give some of their time to volunteer and put a smile on someone's face because they think that you care. I find Dave Eggers writing “Serve or Fail” very persuasive for the following reasons.
My definition of service is a beneficial act performed for someone in need. Examples of service include volunteer work and doing small things for other people when the opportunity arises. It is important for a person to help their community once in a while, because a lot of people are very entitled. I find this present in the majority of people in our society, in my peers and those older than me. I am not exempt from this sense of entitlement, which most likely comes from that fact that we all live comfortably in the middle class of a first world country, which most people would consider not to be in a major war at the moment. It is crucial for people to do things that they don’t really want to for the benefit of others once in a while. For my NJHS service hours, I will be volunteering with SNAP (students need an after party). I helped with the color run, and will be helping make decorations for the SNAP annual after party, which takes place after prom. My family also plans to participate in the USPS (United States Postal Service)’s Operation Santa, which where people adopt letters from needy kids, and then send them a
With an increase in national service that would also increase in a need for civilian service. And with that rise to balance out ratio of civilian service to national service it should be every person upon graduation should be forced to choose one or the other, civilian service, or national service. So the question is not if you think civilian service should be required or not but the question of, upon graduation which would you rather choose? It’s a serious matter that I think should be addressed to the general public. Or instead of volunteering the government should bring the draft back into effect.
I agree with Ansen that there are two-way benefits towards the person that needs help and the person that is volunteering. When I was volunteering to go to the nursing home and pamper the elderly ladies, not only did the elderly have fun but we volunteers had a bunch of fun. We all had smiles on our faces and wish that we could stay a bit longer. It benefited them because it gave them a wonderful day to remember but it did the same for us. It also helped me out in other ways because I was able to use that service as something to put on my resume for when I need to get a job. In the article Ansen mentions the GIVE Act (Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education) and how “it suggests that there is public support for an expansion of national service” (Ansen, 2013, p.137). This part ties in with the day the guest speaker brought up the service for cleaning up the bathrooms, grass, and streets. Not many people volunteered for this one and same goes for me because in my head I didn’t want to clean any bathrooms because I thought that it was gross. While I was sitting there watching a couple of people stand up, my youth pastor looked at me and suggested that I help clean up bathrooms as well and so I did. When I did I felt like a germophobe and hardly wanted to touch anything but when we were done with the bathroom the owner of the store shook our hands with a smile going ear to ear and said thank
In the social and behavioral sciences degree, students are required to fulfill and complete a set of major learning outcomes that demonstrate various skills and knowledge learned while completing the program. The major learning outcome application requires students to provide the completion of a senior capstone deliverable and an upper-division service-learning course. In this major learning outcome, students are required to integrate the use of qualitative and quantitative social science research methods and social theory in order to gather an understanding of real-life social problems. Currently, I am using the social and behavioral sciences principles in my service learning work, as well as in the completion of my capstone proposal.
It is the duty of every American to serve his or her country in one way or another. There are too many people today that believe freedom is free and that it has come at little to no cost. It does not, a countless number of Americans have lost their lives
Should national service be mandatory for all Americans? No, Americans should not be required to perform any service they did not choose to do. In my opinion, all service should be optional and no one should be forced to do things they aren't comfortable with doing. I feel that if the government were to empose a mandatory national service on the American people, many would be upset with thier decision and rebel against it, ending in only conflict. It is said that "The United States was founded on our right to pursue happiness." If things were to become mandatory with no free will by the people, would there be any happiness to pursue at the end. I agree with the statement in passage 2 'The Heart of Service' "Large-scale mandatory service is
What does it really mean to serve someone or something? The United States has become out of touch with the idea of serving someone. When we think of service we think of a server in the food industry. When was the last time you had the opportunity to serve someone whole heartedly without expecting anything in return? Have you ever heard of Pay It Forward? In the average day of a middle-class citizen when is there time between a 40-hour-a-week job, a family to take care of, and any extra time to have for yourself – where does the time to serve come from? We would assume that most of the time we expect the favor to be returned no matter who it is. And sometimes we even get a little ticked off, if it’s not fair that we worked harder than the other person. Even
I believed that comunity service, is part of our nature as a human being. Comunity services is an important addition in our daily lives. How can we refuse to help our communities in time of need, and disater.
Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a proper citizen. Residents of a community have the constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence of lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and choice. Volunteering, involving in positive organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can subsidize to the good of the community. Small deeds that seem to prosper someone in some way or the other is still a way of helping. To learn something from the assistance that one does to another, the deed does not have to be big, as long as the person providing the assistance is doing it with a good heart they can always acknowledge a lesson. Compassion and love is necessary in helping others. When people have the opportunity to help others they may not always get a gift in return, sometimes they may not even get a reply back. This is when the person has to realize that the purpose of helping someone is not for the thank you or the gift, but is for the satisfaction of their soul, betterment of the other, and the ability to learn a lesson. Assisting people needs to be done in a thoughtful and effective way for it to create a lasting impact on his/her self and on society itself.
