The Heard Museum conveys the life and culture of Native Americans in the Southwest, with the help of pre-Colombian to contemporary art and a variety of traditional artifacts. Something that caught my eye was Rosie Yellowhair’s “Emergency Story” sandpainting. It depicts the Navajo creation story and how there were five worlds and what made the people move from the first world to the next. I thought that this was interesting because in class we talked about creation stories about Native Americans and I found those intriguing. So, seeing this sandpainting and knowing that its purpose was to tell its story of creation was astonishing because I’ve never seen a sandpanting that depicted a creation story. Another aspect of the museum that
On January 27th, 2015 I went to the Waterloo Regional Museum located in the city of Kitchener, Ontario. The museum scrutinizes the First Nations people, European settlement at the start of the 1800, the manufacturing peak of the 1900`s and the high sector boom of recent years. Many of the historical artifacts and paintings reminded me of some of the themes discussed in the Discovering the Humanities course. The story of human social development as displayed in the Waterloo Regional Museum focuses on the transition to European settlements. This gradual development can be connected to two main modules in the humanities course: the Iroquian creation story and the modern scientific advancement.
This museum is situated in a house that was built in the late 19th century and was used as a boarding house for students of Kansas State University in the bygone era. The museum has been decorated in a 1880s period style, in spectacular colors and grand design. Visitors can discover how early pioneer families learned to live in style by taking the tour of the house-museum, which includes a living room, parlor, dining room, kitchen, sewing room and bedrooms. So if you are in Manhattan, the beautiful exhibits on display at Wolf House Museum are a must see for art
When I toured the Wichita Art Museum, a collection that caught my eye was in the Highlights and Insight section. It is called, Martha Graham Dance Class which is created by Paul Meltsner. My thoughts on this collection is that it bold yet calming to look at. Additionally, Paul Meltsner used deep colors of blues, oranges, reds, and purple, however by using these colors with the characters dancing, his piece is a creation of elegance. Personally, I think this collection stuck out to me because it is an oil on canvas. To add, this art piece stuck out to me because I am a musical person starting from the age of 6 years old, I played the piano so I felt that this creation of ballet was musically drawn to be elegant. Not only does the art express
The Labelle Heritage Museum was founded to showcase to the world the rich history, culture and heritage of Labelle and its surrounding areas.
I chose to write about the art piece by Thomas Moran after going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. While walking through the buildings I saw a mass of artwork that ranged from gold artifacts to paintings. I have to say that it was a lot to take in but I chose the painting by Thomas Moran called the Stranded Ship on East Hampton Beach. I liked the painting with the raging water crashing on the beach with the stranded ship in the distance. I really like the contrast of the dark waves with the white spray on the beach and white caps on the waves. It seems to tell how dangerous the waves can be but there is a lot of flow. The waves seem to be choppy but big and dangerous but I can feel the sense of movement and the wind blowing. It
The National Churchill Museum is located in Fulton, Missouri at Westminster College where Winston Churchill held his Iron Curtain speech in the gym of the college. It was very interesting to learn that because of the gym’s historical significance, it has not been remodeled or touched structurally so that it would preserve the history of the place of the speech. Westminster holds a beauty in itself, but the history of the college opens up a whole new meaning and feeling when visiting. Not only does the college offer the exciting experience to learn about Winston Churchill and his Iron Curtain Speech, but it also entails a part of the Berlin Wall and the Church of St. Mary which has significance among its own walls. The museum and the college visit was an unforgettable experience and a chance to truly relive history in modern day.
The Mapping exhibit at ASU’s art museum was founded by Mary Hood. Who is the director in the Arizona State University School of art. The idea behind the exhibit was to have Native Americans and other “indigenous” artists work alongside students at ASU. Together the groups would make limited editions prints. These prints would reflect the medium or techniques that the student uses. These mediums could be painting, weaving, beadwork, or ceramic. The term mapping, means a multiple artist printing. This reflects the fact that there is multiple people who work on each project.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's largest and finest art museums. The main Neoclassical architectural style building is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York City, New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. It was founded in 1870 with a mission to collect, preserve, and display works of art. In 1866 a group of Americans gathered at a restaurant to celebrate the Fourth of July. After dinner, John Jay, a prominent lawyer gave a speech proposing that he and his compatriots decided to create a “national institution and gallery of art.” In the next four years, they convinced American civic leaders, art collectors, and philanthropists to support the project, and finally in 1870 the Metropolitan Museum of Art was incorporated. During the 1870s the museum was housed in two different locations in New York City, first in a building at 681 Fifth Avenue and later at 128 West 14th Street. In 1880 the museum moved to its present location in Central Park on Fifth Avenue between 80th and 84th Streets. The museum moved to this land to make a permanent home for the collections. This original Gothic Revival-style brick building, designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold, was opened to
The primary topic of the website and magazine is to give a brief overview about the history museum. Both genres provide readers with two different sources of information about the museum and basic information. The website covers more up to date events and information, and was developed to be a persuasion method to attract the audience to visit the museum. A lot of the information on the website promotes the museum. For example: the site has a visit tab and gives basic information on one page to make is easily accessible for future visitors. On the other hand, the primary topic of the magazine is to give the current museum audience a condensed version of the website and covers the most important topics. Overall both genres play off each other, and both have their own representation of the museum. Throughout this essay we will closely examine the genres; content, structure, design choice, how each genre evokes emotions, and view the different aspects of each and how they target their audience. The purpose of this genre analysis is to examine the efficacy of the chosen genres. In examining
Today, interest in studying and collecting Native American art is steadily rising. In response to the demand for knowledge about the subject, a new website, native-american-art.org, has risen to the forefront for providing facts and resources for anybody interested in expanding their knowledge
Museo Amparo is a private museum located in the historic downtown of Puebla, Puebla. Museo Amparo art runs from prehistoric to modern day. This museum is probably one of the biggest museum ive ever been to. The museum Amparo consists of 3 stories with more than 20 sections. The first story were of mix artist and divided by topics. The Wellcome Collection is a London museum that “explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future.” One of the prominent ways in which The Wellcome Collection is utilising digital media is through the use of digital storytelling. This is a relatively new term that describes a form of digital media production that allows people to share stories through video, animation, photography, and audio. This makes the stories compelling and emotionally engaging, and, like narrative based computer games, often involve user interaction. The resources available to incorporate into a digital story are virtually limitless, giving the storyteller enormous creative latitude. 175
The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art in the Brooklyn Mesuem showcases various exhibitions dedicated to feminist art, in its many shapes and forms. Zanele Muholi: Isibonelo/Evidence is one such exhibition dedicated not to just feminist art, but also displays black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people and their struggle for visibility as well as recognition. Prior to visting the mesum, I reviewed some of the readings that I wanted to comare to the exhibit. They included “Gay is Good” by Martha Shelley and “Womanism” by Alive Walker, which dealt with homophobia and the battle against oppression by colored women respectively. From what I gathered
I have always loved the National Museum of Natural History, ever since I visited for the first time in fourth grade. My favorite exhibitions are definitely those dealing with animals or space, but I cannot pick a favorite. When I found out about the opportunity to volunteer at the museum, I was extremely excited, since the program seemed to be perfect for me. I have experience in teaching and talking in front of groups of people, but I want to take it a step further by talking and being a guide in a busier, more demanding setting. Plus, volunteering at the museum would be a dream come true since I could see the exhibitions every other week; you learn something new every time you visit. Lastly, and least importantly, I want to volunteer
Touch, Taste, Sight, Smell and Sound, five senses used to understand the world around us. Now limit the senses available to nothing but sight, forcing the individual to use their imagination as a replacement. As they immerse themselves into the image in front of them, a true experience of understanding interpretation, and connection ensues. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is occupied by a diversely cultured gallery presented with architectural aesthetics focusing on the theme of each exhibit, allowing an environment for learning, connecting, and immersing oneself into the beauty of art. It is more than the art that creates a successful museum. Factors such as public programs, presentation, and participation provide a unique experience to visitors
