The Healthier UShool Lunch Program Analysis

In the article, “Are Our School Lunches Healthy Enough,” by William Rice the article talks about the act Michelle Obama enforces. Healthy, Hunger Free Kids act is found very pointless if the food kids are served still aren’t healthy. Even though this act has been active for 15 years, and 30 million kids have become involved, this act hasn’t been useful. Kids needs are neglected and ignored in Healthy, Hunger Free Kids act.

School lunch within the United States has progressed to suit nutritious consumption for children in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. The National School Breakfast Program feeds 10 million children every day, and the National School Lunch Program feeds more than 30 million children daily.¹ Upwards of about 50 percent of total caloric needs are achieved at school, hence the need for nutritious and hearty meals for these growing individuals.

The author’s intention is to inform the reader that the healthy lunch programs are failing. The author provides plentiful information and research on the failing school lunch programs in the U.S. “In the war to get America’s children to eat healthier, things are not going well.” Kids are not eating their vegetables. This has become a big problem in America and steps need to be taken to stop unhealthy eating. Like The Agriculture Department mandating that students in the federal lunch program choose a fruit or vegetable with their meals. This solution didn’t work and actually worsened the problem. “Their consumption of fruits and vegetables actually went down 13 percent after the mandate took effect.”

School lunches lack key important nutrients and vitamins. studies show that only 50% of students get a vitamin rich and nutritious meal. 25% of all school lunches lack nutritional meals. This means 176,875 students don't get a nutritious meal. This is why obesity is sweeping the nation.

Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 was signed into law by President Barak Obama on December 13, 2010. This act reauthorizes many child nutrition programs including the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs (NSLP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), the Summer Food Service Program, the Afterschool Meal Program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed). Healthy school lunches are important for kids for many reasons. Focusing on school lunches is important because it affects the health, lifestyle, and education of kids. Healthy school lunches are a good way to get kids the nutrients they need in order to help them grow and succeed. Healthier school lunches will also help kids get through their day. Students are in class yawning and struggling to stay awake, but one student is wide awake. The other students asked, “How are you so alert?” The students says that he ate the new healthy menu. I want to start eating healthier this year because i want to be as healthy as can be. I do worry my health and I am now being cautious over what I eat. I do NOT want the risk of any health condition such as diabetes, heart failure, cholesterol, etc. Another reason why I want to start eating healthier is because I have been gaining weight again, now that the soccer season is over. There have been on occasion when I was at grade school that I have seen at least one of the teachers giving a student money for the student’s lunch. Another close encounter that I can recall is when one of my close friends couldn’t afford a school lunch and I told her I would share my free lunch with her, and that we could just split the whole thing, thus she wouldn’t go famished through the rest of the school day. In my own hometown community, we have a high school enrollment of 1,896 students. Of those 1,896 students, 35% are economically disadvantaged while only 25% are on the free lunch program, (US News, 2016). This shows families that qualify for free and reduced lunch programs are not participating in them for a number of reasons.
