The Haunting of Hill House is a book about four people that all have backgrounds of experiencing supernatural events. Because of this, they were all chosen to explore the supernatural happenings occurring at Hill House. The house was originally built by a man named Hugh Crain. It had been a place of mysterious events and also the deaths of those who lived there. Dr. Montague, a supernatural investigator, then carefully selected three people with paranormal backgrounds, and invited them to explore the occurrences at the house. Luke, the future heir of the house, Theodora, a careless artist, and Eleanor Vance are invited to the house. Eleanor Vance is the main character and narrator of the story. She lived alone,
Langston Hughes was an American poet, community worker, author, playwright, newspaper man, and inspiration from Joplin, Missouri. He was a protégé for many African Americans, despite the times he lived in.
When they were done building, the head builder said that the people who were killed by the rifle would haunt her. And Mrs. Winchester over reacted and added
Every haunted house usually has a sad or treacherous past. Lemp Mansion is no exception. Declared as one of the nine most haunted places in America, the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis has its own history of suicides and untimely deaths. The members of the family had wealth and power yet it seemed almost like a curse was on the family, causing misery and grief over the years.
“A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house” (Gilman 792) shows readers that the house is big, but also that something is off about it. To go further in detail, the room the protagonist stays in is described as a “big, airy room, the whole floor nearly, with windows that look all ways” (793). This just goes to show that the protagonist is lonely and that the house doesn’t help her case. The setting has a feeling of being trapped when she describes more of her room. “The floor is scratched and gouged and splintered” (795) and “this great immovable bed --- it is nailed
Emmeric smelled smoke. He had been enjoying his barley porridge during his break with his younger sister, Emelnie, when he realized something was wrong. He rushed to look out the window of their small home to see where the smoke was coming from. His father’s crops were on fire! Emmeric told his sister to stay put while he went outside to find his father. That was when he saw a large, golden creature surveying the rest of the farm. Emmeric quickly realized that the beast was the cause of the fire. He recognized the scaly creature from stories told by merchant’s from out west. It was a Sunborne, the rarest dragon in Meplioca, Emmeric’s home
Once inside the haunted house she discovers the yellow wallpaper. Which leads her to have an obsession over and she seeks to explore the wallpaper. The narrator comes upon the wallpaper because her husband John decides every aspect of her life. John chose and upstairs room contrary to what the narrator wanted. Originally the narrator was drawn to a room with an opening to the garden, however, that was not taken into account and she was consigned to the upstairs room. Which, was a “former nursery, whose major features are the ancient yellow wallpaper, bars on the windows, and a huge bedstead nailed to the floor” (artickle 1 pg 287). When I first read the layout of the room, I felt uneasy and frightened. I could not imagine how a “loving” husband could take his sick wife who supposedly needs to rest in a room with bars on the windows and the bed nailed to the floor.
A house should be a symbol of safety with feelings of security. But the narrator’s house is symbolic of a torment, and she describes it as “a haunted house” (1). Then goes on to say that she is “afraid… -there is something strange about the house-… [she] can feel it”(2). When the narrator wishes to leave the house, her husband responds with, “… I can’t see how to leave before [the lease is over]” (8).
The implied plot is that the home is haunted, at times scenes are shown in which there appears
When the narrator starts describing the house that her husband is renting for them you start to question why someone would want to live in a house like this. She talks about bars being on the windows and a gate at the top of the stairs. I think her husband had her in an insane asylum. With there being bars on the windows, gates at the top of the stairs, and being so far away from the village makes me think that. The story is from a first person point of view.
The abandoned marsh house, just of the shore, was said to transform at night. It's foggy windows, and mildewed wood was already enought to repel most, but when a group of children from the local middleschool decided that their lives needed to be more adventurous, the house's secrets came out to play. That fateful night, the children would learn what real fear meant. They took the smallest boat off the dock and rowed across the cold marsh, to the house. The boat creaked and groaned as it slammed against the murky, green bedding the marsh house stood on. The door slammed open, almost as if inviting the children in. The half moon lit silve light on the steps before the door and not a single sound could be heard. Those children were never heard from again. The marsh house would retain its secrets for as long as time lasted.
Mentoring and being a positive role model for children can have a big impact on the life course of a child. My service learning proposal is to be a mentor to a child through the Positive Directions Mentoring Program at Hupfeld Academy. Through this program, I will be dedicating an hour a week to a child assigned to me at Hupfeld Academy. The first 30min of that hour are focused on academic needs or challenges they may be facing in the classroom. The last 30min are considered free time to help the child get their mind off school and relax by doing something they enjoy.
She is extremely scared and gets one of the house keepers to help her. Once she finds out that there is no one there she thinks she's going insane. Another scene that is weird is when all the curtains in the house go missing. Nobody knows where they went. The bad part of them going missing is that the children can not withstand the sun and will get really sick.
Gently he said, “Are you sure…? “Oh yes, I’m sure. It’s Giles.” These were the last sentences of my most favourite chapter of my most favourite book. Yep, you guessed it!
