First, I think this book is a science book. Because in book cover , there is a hatchet (also in that time, I do not know what hathet is.) and some realistic picture of forest. So I think ‘ Why science book have newbery? I think only story book can have it.’ But I was wrong. It is a story book. Really interesting book. Main character Brian have a plane accident on his way to visit his father (His mother and father was divorce). He fall and he realize he was in Canadian wilderness. He only have a hatchet his mother gave him as present and a tattered windbreaker. He made his camp, and he gather food and hunt. He ate berries, turtle eggs. He made bow, arrow and spear with hatchet and hunt animals with them. He got fire by spark of hatchet.
First Brian starts his journey when he leaves his mother to go live with his dad with a hatchet his mother gave him as a gift and suddenly finds himself stranded in a rough rugged canadian wilderness. With just the single hatchet and the clothes on his back. He doesn't realize it then but he was luckily crashed by a lake for water and wildlife in and around the lake.

Brian couldn't survive without food so he had to go hunting he made a small bow and arrow. With sticks and string from the survival pack and sharpened rocks to make the arrow heads and he would kill small birds and rabbits. But that bow wasn't getting the food that he needed cause he only hit the animals half the time and sometimes it didn't kill the animals. So he made a bigger and better bow and this he could barely pole back and with that he killed a deer and a moose but the moose didn't die and
He stayed up all night until the bow looked beautiful. When he tried the bow it broke, Brian made many mistakes but it made him better. He then made a new bow and went hunting for fish. This time his target succeeded and he got the fish. He became proud that he captured the fish.

Brian went to search for his belongings at night, while looking for his things he heard something or someone following him so he turned around and saw a bear, he shot at the bear and killed, which provided food for eating, and fur for warmth during the cold nights.
