The Harlem Renaissance Movement

The Harlem Renaissance was a glorious and progressing time for the black cultural. It was a time of uprising in the black community and life. Such as, black painters, musicians, artist, poets, and many other occupations African Americans succeeded from. Entertainment during the Harlem Renaissance made a gigantic impact on the Harlem Renaissance. For example are: musicians, famous night clubs, and poets.

The Harlem Renaissance began with The Great Migration, a period of time where many of the African American population in the U.S. migrated from the south to the north. the reason being that the promise of land had not been delivered, the black codes restricted them, and in turn the African American population was forced into an endless cycle of debt and sharecropping. In the early 1900s, African Americans, also known as Negroes back then were considered inferior, ignorant, unskilled,

"Race pride" and "race consciousness" cornerstones to the Harlem Renaissance, were closely linked to a new understanding of the African heritage of Black American(Marx 170). The Harlem Renaissance was a period between 1920 and 1940 of great cultural, economic and identity assertion among talented and expressive African Americans. Its high point occurred between 1920 and 1930 but it had started before then and continued after. The art, literature and music of the Harlem Renaissance expressed the rebirth of the African American spirit and it was born in the minds of its poets and in the hears of its common people. Such emotions were expressed in songs, essays, artwork, and dance. The Harlem Renaissance brought along racial pride for blacks.

The Harlem Renaissance had taken place during the roaring 20’s, a time where many people were having fun and spending lots of money. Yet, the stock market crash did unfortunately end this prosperous time almost immediately. Many families had lost their jobs and had no money. Arts and literature were just not important anymore for people during that time. The stock market crash is seen as one of the greatest reasons as to why the Harlem Renaissance had died off.

Originally called the New Negro movement, the Harlem Renaissance was a time for African Americans to prove to the world that they had finally overcome oppression. According to the Harlem Renaissance by Richard Wormser, “The Harlem Renaissance was the name given to the cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem between the end of World War I and the middle of the 1930s. During this period Harlem was a cultural center, drawing black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets, and scholars. Many had come from the South, fleeing its oppressive caste system in order to find a place where they could freely express their talents.” (Wormser)

Music changed dramatically in the Harlem Renaissance. Music could be heard in every club, bar, and speakeasies, all thanks to African Americans who cultured this time period’s music. There have been many cultural movements throughout history in this world. One of the greatest movements in this world was the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance movement is defined as a cultural movement that spanned in the 1920’s, at this time known as the Negro Movement; the movement also relied on white patronage. White patronage had a profound effect on the vitality of the Harlem Renaissance, and the evidence says the Harlem Renaissance would not have reached the heights it did without generous white contributions. The Harlem Renaissance spurred events that affected the African Americans society in areas such as migration, the work force, and also racial pride (www.yale.edu).

The harlem renaissance was a period of time after World War I where the African American culture changed drastically. There was a change in music with the rising jazz genre. There was also a large movement in the 1920’s from the south east to the north called the great migration. This brought the black culture to the dense american cities where many people embraced it and evolved it in there own way. This movement also brought a change in writing and poetry styles.

The Harlem Renaissance, also known as “The Negro Movement” was the rise of African American cultures, it gave African Americans the chance to express themselves through literature, art, and music, it was a leading factor in The Great Migration, but the Great Depression of the 1930s brought this celebration of black voices and black ways to an end. The Harlem renaissance came about during the 1920s and took place in Harlem, the center of New York. American writer, philosopher, and educator, Alain Locke, described this time as a “spiritual coming of age”. Although the Harlem Renaissance was a good time for the African American community, a few whites did not see it that way, which caused great controversy with white venues and audiences.

     The Harlem Renaissance was a time of racism, injustice, and importance. Somewhere in between the 1920s and 1930s an African American movement occurred in Harlem, New York City. The Harlem Renaissance exalted the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined African-American expression. It was the result of Blacks migrating in the North, mostly Chicago and New York. There were many significant figures, both male and female, that had taken part in the Harlem Renaissance. Ida B. Wells and Langston Hughes exemplify the like and work of this movement.

I learned many different things about The Harlem Renaissance, actually more than I was taught in school. I found out that the Harlem Renaissance was an African American cultural, social and artistic movement which started in the 1920s. I did not know that The Harlem Renaissance had moved as far as Paris. The Harlem Renaissance was caused due to the Great Migration, it declined and came to an end during the Great Depression. The Harlem Renaissance is most closely associated with Jazz and the rise of African American arts. The movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North was instrumental in initiating the Harlem Renaissance.
