Life has its series of challenges and obstacles (“conditions of defeat”) that can often feel unfair. Individuals go through many ups and downs in their lifetime. Although life is sometimes unfair, we learn to love and cherish every moment we have with one another. True fulfillment arises from the struggle itself, the journey of overcoming difficulties/hardships. Our identities and perspectives on the world are shaped by diverse life experiences. Life can sometimes feel not real, but behind all of it, is the truth. The deeper joys that come from the struggles is what makes life meaningful and valuable, rather than only focusing on happiness. Instead of only focusing on the positives in life, there are also negatives that shape us to who we are …show more content…
Life has many challenges and setbacks. This remark is just a reflection on all the difficulties individuals go through in a lifetime. Nature/life isn’t always “rainbows and sunshine,” that is unrealistic, it’s known to be chaotic and difficult. It is full of happiness, sadness, success, failure, and so on. Humans should be able to discover meaning and purpose in handling these ups and downs. Gatsby was held back from achieving his dream of being an upper class man and marrying Daisy. Gatsby lives in a corrupt environment and has unrealistic expectations for himself and Daisy. “For a while these reveries provided an outlet for his imagination; they were a satisfactory hint of the unreality of reality, a promise that the rock of the world was founded securely on a fairy's wing,”(ch 6, p.95-96) ( F Scott Fitzgerald). Everybody has a past, nobody is perfect, and everyone faces difficulties in life. Even though we don't always want to remember it, it's always there. Everyone is known to live in the moment, therefore happiness and pleasure are …show more content…
In the novel, Gatsby wanted to chase after the American dream and have a large amount of money (buying Daisy anything in life). After meeting Daisy again, they confessed their love for each other, although Daisy still loves Tom, Gatsby needed to get some things off of his chest. That whole moment was short-lived, and they deserved more time with each other. His satisfaction does not come from the finish, it comes from all the work and process. The quote “You see I usually find myself among strangers because I drift here and there trying to forget the sad things that happened to me.” (ch 4, p. 66)( F Scott Fitzgerald) means that Gatsby was possibly setting unrealistic expectations for himself and Daisy, yes there are always good times but when you really sit down for a moment and think about everything, you think about all the sad times you had. Everyone has their bad days, it’s the struggles that lead to personal growth and fulfillment. We are able to realize our power and endurance. It also can imply that struggle teaches us important things about ourselves and the world we live in. Developing empathy, kindness and a deeper understanding of all aspects of
Gatsby creates an unrealistic illusion, with his love for Daisy. He believes that he can ‘win her back’ and his life will change from how it was when he and Daisy were together. This later ended in disappointment. “I can’t help what’s past.” She began to sob helplessly”
At the end, Gatsby went through all of the trouble of changing his life such as going from a poor low class citizen to working hard and earning just enough money to buy a mansion fit for a queen and throwing countless of parties purposely meant for her to see and one day attend all for Daisy due to broken promises of the past and in the long run her not delivering the same passion and love for him is what broke him. Soon after those promises are broken the relationship or friendship starts to sink, Our Everyday life states“When your partner has no warning, it appears that you have again devalued that person, which creates
Other than the fact Gatsby surrounded his life of Daisy, he also took risks to just reach the minimum for Daisy just to be with her. It all started when Daisy would not accept him into her life so, coincidentally he found the pioneer, Dan Cody. This man guided Gatsby to his excellence in new money. But his risky business of bootlegging could have started his mischievous ways and his lack of social skills. Without this business he would be living a safer life and have less caution but, his passion for Daisy strived him to be the man she always wanted. “a penniless young man [with] no real right to touch her hand,” Gatsby remains profoundly aware of his shortcomings, yet desire compels him to take what he can “ravenously” in the pursuit of his dream girl and romantic ideal (Fitzgerald 156). This was also an example of how the American Dream struck everyone during this time period. Money controlled everyone and everything especially love between two old lovers. “Both Gatsby and Daisy’s stories, for example, reveal how compelling the American dream has remained, despite the fact that the dream, as it has been given material life, has betrayed its original moral premises; Certainly both Gatsby and Daisy have been victimized by their disregard of the moral implications of their choices” (Resneck). This represents how both their choices caused a death and mainy his death. All in all “Both subscribed to the part of the dream which promised that security, status, and wealth would bring fulfillment. Neither recognized that their failing was that they pursued those goals at the expense of love, responsibility, and honesty.”
This shows that he has gained everything really only for Daisy and that she has completely taken over his life. Finally, the character of Gatsby was written with these character traits in order to teach us a valuable lesson about trying to achieve things that are unattainable. “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams — not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. ”(Fitzgerald, 72). This quote explains that dreams many times go beyond reality and will be disappointing in the end.
Although Gatsby tends to look in the rearview mirror most of his life. It says in The Great Gatsby “his life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was. “This shows that he just keeps attempting to relieve the past and that is not what a mature person would do. Gatsby is not going to end up with Daisy and he just needs to accept that she is with Tom. He should have lived
Gatsby’s pursuit for his past relationship becomes selfish in his attempt to make Daisy notice him, specifically his wealth. While Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby considering his deprivation of wealth, he remains judgmental when he assumes Daisy “only married [Tom] because [he] was poor and she was tired of waiting for [him]...she never loved any on except [Gatsby]” (130).Quickly, he presumes she solely decided on wealth to marry Tom, a simple alternative. Bringing up the past generates the thought to please himself into believing that Daisy has always
Life offers each and every one of us a large array of choices. Each choice is espoused with an equal consequence. Within the daily walk of life, the choices we make tend to make us. Although we seem to think that some may have an easier life than the one we have been chosen to lead, the truth of the matter is, most everyone will face some type of adversity in their lives. The difference between those who are always upset at the world and those who wake up motivated are the simple everyday choices we make, not those that make us.
You can ask a hundred different people about their opinion on life and you’ll probably get a hundred different answers. Yet an overlying message that may be heard would be that life will knock you down a couple of times. Graduating from high school and soon being on your own, will cause many to come to find out how true this message is. Bad days are destined to happen. There will be days when you’ll be in the library with bags under your eyes working on assignment that is due in 5 hours. There will be days you’ll be so exhausted that you don’t even remember what happened in your classes. There will be days where all you can do is stay in bed, and that’s okay. Bad days are destined to happen, there is no way around it. You can ask everyone you know and more than not, they’ll say that they’ve reached rock bottom at one point in their life. Sometimes people forget that bad things are supposed to happen. Yet when bad things happen, it forces us to look at the good in life. Because in life, the things that go wrong are often the very things that lead to other things going
If we look at why Gatsby did such things, we actually find a romantic dreamer whose conducts are the results of his romantic dreams. He wants to recreate what he experienced with Daisy in the past although Nick reminds him he cannot. He actually trusts his money yet money itself never brings happiness. At a very early age Gatsby felt a deep attachment to Daisy and wanted to marry with her. However, he lost his beloved because of a lack of wealth and Daisy married with a prosperous man -Tom.
He thought that Daisy was going to solve all of his problems and that with her he would be living the Dream. One thing Gatsby failed to realize was that he thought things were going to be like they used to be. “As I went over to say good-by I saw that the expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby's face, as though a faint doubt had occurred to him as to the quality of his present happiness. Almost five years! There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams – not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion.
Along the way, we may stumble upon obstacles that will come between the paths that we are destined to take. In order to follow the right path, we must overcome these obstacles. Sometimes these obstacles are really blessings in disguise, only we don't realize that at the time.
I must be grateful for my pain, because it is the pain that drudgery that reminds me I am alive. As I struggle— I know that I have hope. The most dismal, dark alley can be transcend into peace, if I chose to think so. Struggle is the refugee of my hard earned, sublimity. If I chose not to struggle— I gave up hope and no longer alive.
Sometimes we fail to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and we start to wonder if it’s all worth. Then after fighting through all our struggles and problems, we learn something crucial. Adversity is what makes us stronger. My life viewed through the eyes of others may be seen as perfect or maybe easy. They might say that I got
Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story - or great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or her role."
Life is something that requires a considerable amount of physical and mental effort. Some are fortunate enough to have everything prepared for them. Such as some are born into money; some come across good fortune yet most work hard from the start to get some where in the world. It just all depends on how you were brought into this world. For some people, life is full of stress and hardships. That’s how life was for someone very dear to me. He had it difficult from the start. However he chose not to let life get him down. When life gave him lemons, he made lemonade.
