Materialism is a timely, social problem which is evident throughout history and in today’s world. Materialism is one issue where people may blind themselves from their moral values and drift away from family or their true selves. It can run and/or ruin a person’s life. Material parenting and the unhealthy lifestyle of a materialist are just two areas where leading a materialistic life may be fostered or lead. The materialistic world may be filled with joys and riches, however the material objects can not bring true happiness to any one person. Some parents do not stop their kids from these particular fates and sometimes even use objects as rewards. Material parenting is one area where materialistic lives can be fostered. In order to prevent material parenting one must provide a child with “time, attention and communication” (Lieber 2) as opposed to material objects. This source also mentions that when punishing a child one should not take away objects, but privileges instead. Daisy, married to Tom Buchanan in the Great Gatsby, talks about how she wants her daughter to be a fool. She says, “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool--that’s the best thing a girl can do for herself in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald 17). Daisy hopes her daughter to not try to be successful in life, to not have to try in general, but receive everything she will need in life from others. She mentions that she has seen and done a lot in her life and implies that all she would want for her daughter is for her to be safe from that. Daisy may intend to douse her young daughter in gifts in order to guard her from the terrors of the outside world. The Buchanans live a very luxurious life in their Georgian Colonial mansion on the bay, and they don’t plan on shading that life from their young daughter.
