The Giver is about a futuristic society that has no war, fear or pain. The citizens have no choice or freedom. For example, They are assigned roles in the Community according to what the elders see fit. The elders decide your name, family, job and even spouse.
In order to accomplish this strict society Lowry used a tribal setting, which one main person is responsible for the community. In this case it is the giver for who is responsible for past memories and emotions that are restricted from the people in the community. In a attempt to create a utopia society Lowry used a strict environment in The Giver which, restricted them from color, strong emotions, weather and most important choice.
This society restricts the ability of the adolescence to explore them true self's. They are shunned and punished for not following order. This resulted in the main character experiencing conflict identity and role confusion. The primary character is Jonas who is in his adolescence year, he is chosen to be the new giver and will take on all the burden of the community memories and pain. Jonas will be responsible for making authoritative decisions in the community. Jonas is given access to the world around him and he finds himself questioning his purpose and rebelling

He believed that there were numerous factors to the formation of identity. According to Erikson (1968), identity refers to sense of who one is as a person and what is their contribute to society.
