The Geismar (Williams Olefins plant explosion) happened 13th of June 2013 at a petrochemical plant in Geismar. The catastrophic event resulted in death of two employees and injured 147 others. The explosions involved rupture equipments, a heat exchanger (reboiler) shell disastrously rupturing making boiling liquids expanding therefore causing steam explosion during a non routine operational activities. This plant had no prior record of such incident until this particular one. This plant is situated in an industrial area about 20miles of southeast of Baston Rouge, Louisiana. The plant was established in 1968 by the Allied chemical, but was transferred to Olefins William (Geismar) subsequent to a merger in 1999 with the Union Texas petroleum.

There are multiple important people and organizations involved with this gasoline pipeline explosion. The most important would be the Olympic Pipeline Company itself. The Olympic Pipeline Company is operated by BP Pipelines. BP Pipelines is the second largest pipeline company in the United States. There were a few important employees involved in this case that worked for Olympic. There were the inspectors of the gasoline pipeline, which were to inspect the pipeline’s mechanics. Also, there were the employees who were responsible for installing a pressure relief system that did not work. In addition, the computer system administrator was very important since this person was working on the software development of the pipeline’s control system during
On January 10, 1901, a huge geyser of oil exploded from a drilling site at Spindle top Hill, by an underground salt deposit located near Beaumont in Jefferson County, southeastern Texas. Reaching a height of more than 150 feet, the “gusher” was more powerful than any previously seen in the world. A booming oil industry soon grew up around the oil field at Spindle top, and many of the major oil companies in America.

Recently, a fire in El Segundo has occurred around October 17 a Tuesday night until the next day October 18 Wednesday at 10-11 o’clock at night. Hot orange yellow flames spread and a cloud of dark gray smoke traveled. According to Abc7 that, “firefighters responded to what has happened to the Chevron refinery and took them about 45 minutes to extinguish.” This refinery was built in 1911 and situated on 324 W. El Segundo Boulevard. A statement said by Chevron, “It is one of the largest on the West Coast, processes 274,000+ barrels of crude everyday, covers 1,000 acres, storage capacity of 12, and 5 million barrels in 150 storage tanks larger than 30 feet in diameter.” No flights were interfered with since it is south of Los Angeles International
On April 17, 2013 the disaster of West, TX was an ammonium nitrate explosion at a fertilizer storage and distribution facility. The explosion killed 15 and 200 other people were injured. According to the United States Geological Survey, the explosion was recorded as a 2.1-magnitude tremor. 350 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed, including three schools, an apartment complex and a nursing home. The last time the plant had been inspected by OSHA (Occupational safety and Health Administration) was in 1985. The force of the explosion was 7.5-10 tons of TNT. The injuries that were seen included typical 'blast injuries': punctured lungs, bowels, eardrums and wounds caused by flying shrapnel and debris. Some had broken bones and head injuries
Prior to the disaster, the company had been facing a financial crisis for many years because the sale of pesticides had been fallen (Joseph, Kaszniak and Long 2005, p. 544). Due to the budget cuts, many plant operators received insufficient training on operations and safety awareness (Mannan 2012, p. 2649). As shown in Figure 1, there was a decrease in the length of training programmes for plant operators from 18 months in 1975 to only one month in December 1984 (Chouhan 2005, p. 207). Therefore, with a lack of the knowledge of runaway reactions occurring in the storage tank when the accident happened, many workers could not immediately take any emergency action to lessen the risk of the MIC escape from the storage tank (Chouhan 2005, p. 207). To connect the tank with another
There exists no power as inexplicable as that of love. Love cannot be described in a traditional fashion; it is something that must be experienced in order for one to truly grasp its full enormity. It is the one emotion that can lead human beings to perform acts they are not usually capable of and to make sacrifices with no thought of the outcome or repercussions. Though love is full of unanswered questions and indescribable emotions, one of the most mystifying aspects of love is its timeless nature. Love is the one emotion, unlike superficial sentiments such as lust or jealousy, which can survive for years, or even generations. In the novel The Gargoyle, the author, Andrew Davidson, explores the idea of eternal love between two people,
A runaway chemical reaction resulted in the explosion of T2 Laboratories in Jacksonville Florida. Four people were killed and fifteen more were injured from the blast. This catastrophe could have been avoided with the proper steps, however none were taken.
A presidential committee was designated to review the accident. After various months the investigators wrote a report, showing an O-Ring seal rupture as the main reason of the explosion. Due to the freezing climate, the ring didn’t expand to hold the seal firm, letting hot vapors to escape.
The Odyssey written by Homer is an epic poem set in Ancient Greece. It’s commonly read by ninth graders in high school. I believe that The Odyssey should be taught to freshmen because of the good morals and values that it instills in people; these are applicable in everyday life. This poem teaches people that it’s important to stay true to yourself and those you love, that overconfidence and arrogance could end up harming yourself and others, and to have bravery and courage, even when it seems difficult. First of all, as said earlier, The Odyssey teaches people to stay true to yourself and those that you love.
BP knew in advance, the life span of the pipes. These pipes were installed in 1977 and had a twenty five year expiration (Jennings, 2009). BP decided not to replace the pipes. The explosion occured in 2006 because the corrosion in the pipes had exceeded their expiration date by five years.
Similar to all nouns in the Japanese language, geisha, does not possess singular or plural forms. The word is composed of two kanji. The primary kanji, "gei", means art. The latter kanji, "sha", means person or doer. If you were to translate the word "geisha" to the English language, the most literal rendition would be "artist". There is another term that geishas go by and that is "geijo". This word is most commonly used to refer to geisha indigenous to western Japan, including Kyoto.
On April 20, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest accidental release of oil into marine waters in history. As a result, a huge loss of money and life was caused and affected serious environmental damage to wild animals and water pollution. BP was accused of their irresponsibility that it took 87 days before the well was closed and sealed. BP’s shares
British petroleum has experienced a series of oil spill accidents since it was established, however, the 2010 oil spill was considered the worst oil spill accident in the company’s history. The drilling rig in the Deepwater Horizon exploded and killed 11 workers and released thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico (Arnold & McKay 16). The accident affected different states along the coastline including Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. In addition, the oil spill affected the wild life as it killed birds, fish and destroyed nearby ecosystems and economies including tourism and fishing. Several factors contributed to the oil spill accident including cost saving and failure to put in place safety
