This paper will sum up the main events, what occurs after, and some tragedies in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Talking about what really was happening while the Hubermann’s door were closed and the lights were off. The truth about what was really happening behind those stacks of paint cans and bed sheets in the basement. Too bad it all ended the way it did, but to be fair they do say you have to go through the rain to get to the rainbow.

Both “The Man I Killed” and “The Man He Killed” deal with a touchy subject: the morals and ethics of killing someone in war. “The Man He Killed” is set during WW1 and is told through the perspective of an anonymous main character while “The Man I Killed” is set during the Vietnam war and is told through the perspective of O’Brien. The story may convey a similar message, but three things that set the two works of literature apart are the setting, reaction, and the person.

In the text’s earliest stages, O’Brien feebly muses on the ideas formed from both his pre- and post-college life, demonstrating a socially unacceptable unsureness brought forth from the desire to conform to both ideologies, which consumes him until he reflects on it in the 1980s. Soon after the brief description of O’Brien’s ideas of moral behavior and courage unfold, O’Brien’s novel jumps from his small-town American life to a place where O’Brien first began to develop ideas separate from his parents’ ridged ideals: college. Falling alongside many other students in the ‘60s, O’Brien is exposed to the idea of the war being unfounded and begins to tentatively form his ideas, taking a “stand against the war”. However, he does “nothing radical…just ringing a few doorbells for Gene McCarthy” (O’Brien 173). While aligning with the principles associated with the movement in a tentative manner, O’Brien makes the suggestion that these ideas were a governing principle when dealing with the war’s justification. However, he then echoes the other side’s rhetoric, stating he “could not claim to be opposed to war as a matter of general principle” especially when it was needed to stop a true evil, for then he “would’ve willingly marched off to battle” (O’Brien 175). Through the inclusion of these two contrasting ideas side by side in the novel, one can gather O’Brien seeks

While some of these crimes were “Robin Hood” style acts, many were done simply to serve Day’s self-interest. The crimes Day commits were done because he takes pride in hurting his government, albeit a corrupt one, and because he wanted the government to recognize him over the whole nation. Many of these actions are stated in a conversation between Day and June after he has been arrested: “‘Were you responsible for vandalizing the Department of Intra-Defense two years ago, and destroying the engines of two warfront airships?’ ‘Yes.’ “Did you set fire to a series of ten F-472 fighter jets parked at the Burbank air force base right before they were to head out to the warfront?’

Jumping back into the past, Gregory Orr tells the incident when he and a group of five hundred of men, women, teenagers, and old folks assemble in Jackson, Mississippi. In Jackson for a peaceful demonstration, Gregory Orr and the rest of the group were arrested and taken away “to the county fairgrounds” (128, 1). Where they was beaten by officers of the law, Orr stated, “I emerged into the outdoors and the bright sunlight and saw them-two lines of about fifteen highway patrolmen on either side. I was ordered to walk, not run, between them. Again I was beaten with nightsticks, but this time more thoroughly, as I was the only target” (129, 2). Once freed from his captors, Gregory Orr gets in his car to head back north, but on his way back he was pulled over by flashing lights. Thinking it was the police; Gregory Orr pulled over and was approached by two white men. One of the white men said, “Get out, you son of a bitch, or I’ll blow your head off” (133, 3). The two white men takes Gregory Orr’s wallet and tell him to follow them, Scared for his life, Gregory Orr did exactly what the two men told him to do. After following the two men, Gregory Orr is back in jail in Hayneville. “Already depressed and disoriented by the ten days in jail in Jackson, I was even more frightened in Hayneville,” (136, 1) stated by Gregory Orr.

Innocence is what makes a child a child. Innocence is the reason for a joyous childhood for children. However, Innocence can be seized away just instantaneously. Ishmael Beah's Innocence was snatched away when he became a child soldier in the Sierra Leone war. In A long way gone, Beah embodies the loss of Innocence by sharing his inhumane actions.

In this story Tim O’ Brien, the author, is the main character. What a little bit strange is, is the fact that he is the protagonist but also the antagonist. In this story Tim O’ Brien must decide between 2 things. He can choose to do something honorable and report for the war or he must obey this conscious and either go to jail in Canada. This process teaches him a lot about himself and he learns that people who do brave things are only motivated by embarrassment of shame. After a certain period O’ Brien goes to Vietnam and carries a new sense of shame with him. Once there he found a war where soldiers carry all manner of weaponry. They carry fear, hate, guilt, love, dreams, and blame. They used tough, coarse, language to make the war seem less real. Most of all, as they marched from village to village, they carried the question ‘what’s it all for?’ Looking back now, he realizes that the war is now reduced to stories. Stories put a spin on the war, make it seem less painful, less real. Tim O’ Brien is a member of Alpha Company and they have a lot to carry for. The men of the Alpha Company march, fight, camp, joke, dream, and die. Those elements came all back in this book. The book tells the story of those men before and after the war to give the reader a picture from how the situation was during the war and how the war affected them later. Some who have read this book have questioned is Tank Brooks actually Dick Rhodes. Because of the realism that each character conjures up, others have asked. “Is this a cry for help from the author?” “Is it a suicide note in book form?”
