A bully is someone who uses their superior strength and/or influence to intimidate and sometimes even force someone to do something. There are two main things a mean behavior has to have to be considered bullying which are repetition and a difference in power. Repetition means that the behavior has to happen more than once and difference in power means that one side, the bully, has an advantage over the other, this can be physically or socially. There are many different types of bullying although all types have to have those two basic principles in order to actually be considered bullying. A common type of bullying is physical bullying. Verbal bullying is usually when somebody says or writes hurtful things usually to make someone else feel bad about themselves. Verbal bullying includes teasing, name-calling, taunting, insults, spreading rumors, threats, racist or sexual remarks, and any other repeated verbal abuse. The verbal form of bullying can sometimes be just as harmful to the victim as physical bullying. Verbal bullying is more commonly used between girls to spread rumors about someone to get other people to not like him/her. Common effects that bullying has on victims are depression, anxiety, loneliness, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, lower grade scores, more likely to drop out or skip school, and also in some cases suicide. The victims are not the only ones affected by bullying, it is proven that most bullies have been picked on before and that's what causes them to bully others. Bullies are very likely to abuse alcohol and drugs, get into fights, have criminal convictions, drop out of school, and they are also likely to abuse their spouse or children. Victims of bullying are found to be two to nine percent more likely to consider and attempt suicide than others who have never been bullied. According to Yale University's studies, the bullies are also at a higher risk of suicide than most other kids.
