Most people think that all deserts are hot and dry but there are four major desert types. They are a hot and dry desert, a semiarid desert, a coastal desert, and a cold desert. A hot and dry desert is the typical desert that is 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit and it lacks precipitation. A semiarid desert is similar as a hot and dry desert. A coastal desert is a desert that is cool in the winters and hot in the summers. A cold desert that has a cold climate all year long. There are four major hot and dry deserts in North America. They are the Chihuahua, Sonoran, Mojave and the Great Basin. There are others outside of the U.S. including the Southern Asian reasm, Neotropian (South and Central America), Ethiopian (Africa) and Australian. The seasons …show more content…
They also include the Nearctic realm (North America, Newfoundland, Greenland, Russia, Europe, and Northern Asia). Semiarid means a climate or place that is partially acid or semi-dry and has less than 20 inches of precipitation each year. Summers are land and dry, and like hot deserts, winters normally bring little rainfall. Summer temperatures are around 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Normally the temperature does not go above 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall ranges from 2-4cm annually. The soil can be sandy and fine-textured to loose rock fragments or gravel. In areas such as mountain slopes the soil is shallow, rocky or gravely with good drainage. Most plants have a spiny nature in this desert to help protect from the hazardous environment. “Many plants have silvery or glossy leaves, allowing them to reflect more radiant energy. This plant often has an unfavorable odor or taste. Semiarid plants include: creosote bush, bur sage, white thorn, cat claw, mesquite, brittle bushes, lyciums, and jujube” (Umcp.berkeley.edu) during the daytime many animals find protection in underground burrows where they are3 insulted from heat and humidity. These animals include: mammals such as kangaroo rats, rabbits, and skunks; insects like grasshoppers and ants; reptiles like lizards and snakes; and birds such as the burrowing …show more content…
The desert has cool winters and long, warm summers. The average tempetures for the summer is 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The winter tempetures are 41 degrees farheiet or below. The maximum temperate is about 285 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is 8-13 cm in a year. The maximum rainfall over a long period of time is 37cm. the minimum of rainfall is 5 cm. the soil is fine textured with a moderate salt content. “All of the plants with thick and fleshy leaves or stems can take in large quantities of water when it is available and store it for future use.” (Umcp.berekely.edu) the plants that live in this types of desert include: the salt bush, buckwheat bush, black bush, rice grass, little leaf horse brush, black sage, and chrysothamnus. The animals that have to live in this desert have to have adaptations to this desert like dealing with the desert heat and the leak of water. The animals that live in this desert include: insects, mammals, amphibians, birds, and
An impermeable surface cannot be penetrated by any element. Such a surface will not allow rain to percolate into the desert soil leaving no plants with root systems able to survive unless specifically adapted to the climate.
The Chihuahuan desert is large area of the northern Mexico and runs into the southern part of the United Stated which include west Texas. The region of the desert has a high altitude of 1000 to 1500 meters which fall to about 350 meters along the Rio Grande River. Summers are very hot and the winter are somewhat cool, which some night frosts. Rainfall in this area is about 20-30 cm which mostly happens during the summer time. In most of the Chihuahuan Desert most of it has calcareous soil that are derived from the limestone beds. The Chihuahuan Desert has many types of vegetation such as Yucca, such as Torrey yucca or the banana yucca, they are very difficult in telling them apart because of hybridization, because they are
Summer: Refreshing sea breezes allow for pleasing conditions. Temperatures average to about 25*C (78*F) with 11 to 12 hours of daylight. It does not rain much during this season, about 29 dry days per month. Southeastern regions are affected by a subtropical anticyclone that permits temperatures to rise to 40*C.

The soil commonly found is alkaline which allows the desert plants to grow and gain nutrients through the roots in the ground. the temperature allows for Predators to be able to hunt for longer stretches of time in cooler temperatures and often rest in the shade in preparation of hunting in the warmer temperatures. the sand dunes help to Prevent soil erosion by storing sand that replaces the eroded sand below with more sand so the total amount of sand in an area does not decrease.
The Mohave Desert spreads across Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and some parts of the State of California; and its climate reflects extremes of hot and cold. At winter temperatures are cold, as low as 8 degree Fahrenheit, while the summer reaches about 120 degree Fahrenheit, winds are present year round and blow at about 25 MPH regularly and there are gusts of 75MPH. There is no time were the extreme weather is sustainable.
Moreover, many people call the Chaparral climate the Mediterranean climate because of its rainy, mild winters and dry, warm summers (Raven, 116). These summers in the Chaparral are very hot and dry, receiving very little if any rain,
The climate of the interior plains is continental, which basically means that the climate is relatively dry with extremely hot summers and cold winters. The weather is very diverse and may change quickly without warning. In the North of the physiographic region, the winters are long and the summers are short and cool whereas in the South, the the winters are harsh with little precipitation and long summers. Although the humid weather and the flat lands create an ideal place to grow crops like wheat and corn, the growing season itself is quite short, even in the southern region due to the lack of precipitation needed for diversified crops to flourish. The flat prairies east to the Rockies is a meeting ground for Arctic, Pacific and
The physical environment has three different climates, the heights, steppe, and desert zones. The climate of the heights has an average temperature between 43 to 50 degrees with an annual rainfall from 16 to 27 inches with a growing season of 95 days. The steppe zone has an average temperature range from 45 to 50 degrees with an annual rainfall of 12 to 16 inches and the growing season averages 147 days. The desert zone temperatures average 50 to 60 degrees with an annual rainfall rage from 7 to 11 inches and the growing season averages 173 days.
The Shrublands is a vast barren and dry land containing many different type of shrubbery and desert like plants and animals. This biome is found mostly in the south western portion of the United States. Shrublands contain low nutrient soil and leaf litter is critical for nutrients to spread but is often blown away. Shrublands are very exposed to the sun which makes it hot and dry. The annual rainfall is 10-20 inches. It 's hot and dry in the summer and cool and moist in the winter. Temperatures in the summer can get up to 100 degrees fahrenheit and down to 30 degrees fahrenheit in the winter. Some plants have adapted to the shrubland environment by inheriting a waxy texture on the leafs to reflect the sunlight away. The animals have adapted because they have become more active during dawn and dusk to avoid the heat.

The climate in the highlands varies with elevation. The coolest temperatures usually occur on the heights of the mountains. Most of the precipitation falls between the months of October and April. The deserts receive less than 4 in of rain a year, whereas the mountains receive more than 40 in of precipitation, mostly as

The defining character of a desert is usually low levels of rainfall with under 25 cm per year. Additional to that, the relationship between rainfall and the evaporated and transpired water must be taken into consideration. “A desert is a biological community in which most of the indigenous plants and animals are adapted to chronic aridity and periodic, extreme droughts, and in which these conditions are necessary to maintain the community’s structure” (Phillips, Comus, 2000, p. 10). This means that it is the environmental and climatic conditions that have created an evolutionary pressure for the flora to develop.
