Discussion
Based on the five interviewees, the research questions results can be discussed. The first question is agreed upon by the sociologist and the graduate student. They were not pleased with the results of media and trans individuals. The sociologist is more practical and thinking of how much media has progressed with this topic. The graduate student is harder on the media and thinks they are not doing enough to bring enough coverage for trans people. They both agreed stereotypes are judgements that make people feel like an outsider and make them feel less than. The victimization of Trans people needs more coverage, heterosexual individuals are always on the news and have more limelight in their issues.
The second question was answered by most of the interviewees and they agree with diversifying everything whether it be a job, a culture or society. Diversity makes society grow and change for the better. Diversity is what makes creativity and ideas worthwhile and why teamwork is how the world works. The interviewees did not catch themselves on naming the Trans celebrities. They were oblivious to the fact that they only named one Female-to-Male celebrity. They even tried looking up some, but they did not recall ever seeing or hearing of the person.

Talking about their physicality and constantly bringing it up is unethical. Women have been objectified enough, and so have trans people. People always asking about their surgeries to see if they have the “right” genitalia, and it makes them feel less of themselves. It makes them feel like their saving grace is their face or the fact that they are trans. It would take away who they are and drive their spirits down. When their genitals are brought up it negates the fact that they are the same person whether they got surgery or
All in all, the documentary The Middle Sexes covers many controversial topics. Some of these topics include the biology of middle sexes, the dangers of being a transgender, and societies outlook on transgenders. With much analysis, I’ve realized that this film has too narrow of a perspective on transgenders and middle sexes. The restricted perspective prevents the audience from being
Caliban, a very misunderstood character, while he may seem to be the monster on the outside. He isn’t who he appears to be. He is simply a product of his environment. Before Prospero showed up the island was his, Caliban’s mother had left him the island, but now he is only a slave to Prospero, who tortures him. So it sounds to me that Caliban isn’t in fact the monster, and the monster may actually be the person that you didn’t expect it to be.
When discussing injustices, it is pivotal--for the sake of true progressive social change--to include all oppressed groups into the dialogue. Transgender People tend to be heavily misrepresented and demonized. Because of transphobia, there
In conducting this investigation, the author utilized “a larger ethno- graphic study…of self-identified trans people of color in the USA… (along with) 31 formal interviews, (and) hundreds of hours of informal interviews” (5). The interviewees were 12 trans women and 19 trans men, aging from 21-52, ethnically diverse and all with some “college education” (5). The topics
The article starts off defining the term transgender, and different circumstances where others attempted to ‘normalize’ the homosexual and transgender movements. The article states that transgender people “are deeply troubled individuals who need professional help, not societal approval or affirmation.” (Traditional Values Coalition 1). The article continues, showing instances where the transgender movement won “major political victor[ies]” (Traditional Values Coalition 2), such as California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000 which protected transgender children at public schools. The coalition states that the media is helping the transgender movement by portraying transgender people as “misunderstood and persecuted” (Traditional
American society today is not any different from the past, except today people are apt to discuss everything publicly on various social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram just to name a few. Transgender persons happen to be one of those subjects that have become the hot topic of the new normal. Nowadays there are blogs, tweets, and pictures posted online of people’s transition “coming out.” Like the past, society is still tough when it comes to judging each other. Although transgender might not have had a recognized community in the past, it is prevalent that society is becoming more accepting of their community, and aware of issues their community faces. In this essay the names, nouns, or pronouns used will be in accordance to the individual’s preference.
The interviews yielded very different responses on the subjects’ belief on the way which the media represents Black women. AR a 22-year-old African-American woman did feel like the mainstream media does negatively portray Black women; she also believed that the way in which the media portrays and depicts Black women ends up affecting the way that others in society (especially others who do not have contact with the African-American community) perceive Black women. However, for NK a 27-year-old man who identifies as Black or biracial the story was different: NK did not believe that most people put much value in the way that people are represented in mainstream media. NK claims that the media stereotypes all racial and ethnic
For this paper, I have chosen to interview Veda Dyne. I chose to interview her because I have heard about her story from my friends and I wanted to get to know her a little better. Veda just recently openly joined the LBGT+ community. She is different from me because of her sexual orientation, but also her family life. She grew up in a completely different setting than I did, and I found that very interesting. Not only that, she has overcome some very tough situations throughout her life that most 19 year olds have never had to go through. She is a very strong person, and I’m proud to say I got to find out her whole life story.
Both are witnesses of how society believes genitals and biology define an individual. Although society is uncomfortable with the uncertainty individuals struggle with, they should not use violence as a way of expressing their opinion. Violence has increased and women of the trans community are more likely to commit
“Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She” is a documentary that shows a brief explanation on human sexuality. It shows how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people fit in society in various places such as U.S, India, and Thailand. Most transgender people have been struggling to define differences. Most of all, it is not a choice they made to be a transgender, rather it comes naturally. Transgender people face severe discrimination in every day aspects of their life. Based on the documentary, I would like to focus on the discriminations that is happening on transgender people. I would like to see transgender people in at work place, at schools, and at the public.
Google defines collaboration as “The action of working with someone to produce or create something.” Collaboration consists of leadership, teamwork, and effective-listening, qualities which I confidently believe I can contribute to the MSU community. My first semester of college, I joined a Relay for Life committee where we had weekly decisions about how to improve the lives of those people who have cancer. Relay for Life is a community based event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. As a team, we listened to one another’s comments and engaged in conversation. Working endlessly for hours, and understanding all opinions, we provided an amazing event for those fighting cancer and those helping to fight. The idea of collaboration between
Over the past few years, the issues faced by people who identify as transgender (gender dysphoric) have gained momentum in the media. From Caitlyn Jenner to which bathroom to use, transgender people have made a lot of progress in addressing
Media and its representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual (LGBT) themes has been prevalent throughout time. According to the collections of studies and stories by Meem, Mitchell and Jonathan (2010) concerning LGBT individuals, it is important to represent such themes because it is able to enlighten people on how our society as a whole, has become dynamic. The Media can be seen as a “central source” where negative perceptions can be created. As a result, stereotypes can be either created or perpetuated about this group, negative or otherwise. Media as a medium, therefore, is an extremely powerful tool in our society, and can be used to change or create people 's perceptions about this particular segment of our world (LGBT).
On October eighteenth 2017 at 6:00pm in the Little Chute Town Hall, I attended a board meeting where the American flag sits and we talk about different problems and things the community wants to improve, and to be able to discuss as a community.
One of the first things that the subgroup did was distribute a short survey amongst transgender organizations. The survey was designed to help the group learn what transgender organizations, not only in the United States and Europe but also worldwide, were thinking about various hot topics in gender identity. They were interested in suggestions for possible reconstruction of the diagnosis if it were to
