Throughout history, any established government has always maintained a militant force to defend their land and if need be, attack other regions or nations. However before the United States was founded on 4 Jul 1776, there was a militant force. That militant force was officially considered the United States Army and was established in 14 Jun 1775. As time progressed from the founding of the nation to current day, the military has progressed as well. Specifically, there are five branches that comprise the military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and the Navy. There are different requirements to join each respected branch and different standards of living that come with joining the respected branch. When beginning the journey to enlist in the military a prerequisite is taking the ASVAB; this is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. Every member attempting to enlist must take this test, however there are minimum score requirements for each respected branch. Here are the minimum scores for each respected branch: Air Force is 50, Army is 31, Coast Guard is 50, Navy is 50 and the Marines is 32. Each branch’s score …show more content…
Individuals that are in the Navy will be living on a boat away from land for an extended duration with plenty of bunkmates to conserve space. Individuals that are in the Army and Marines will be living in barracks with roommates until they serve for a certain amount of time and are granted permission to move out. Individuals that are in the Air Force and Coast Guard will be living in dormitories alone however they will share a bathroom with another individual; they may move out after permission is granted as well. Although the standards of living differ between branches they are all similar in the fact that the government is providing housing for their members that are serving for the
First of all, basic requirements must be met such as, age, certain level of education, aptitude, physical and character requirements. One must be the age of 18 to enlist alone but 17 year olds must have their parents’ consent. A high school diploma must have been earned as well as being a United States Citizen. Certain qualities such as mental preparedness, physical fitness, and readiness are all qualities a member must have to be successful. These qualities will help keep the member mentally stable and be able to handle stressful situations as well as be ready to report for any military assignment. The last but most definitely not least requirement is passing of the ASVAB test. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is an academic, timed test meant to gauge the ability to learn a new profession usually made available to all high school juniors. The score received on the ASVAB is the percentage of the people that the test taker has done better on the test than. For example, scoring a 61 would mean the test taker was more successful on the test than 61% of the people that have already taken the ASVAB. It’s all a huge competition to see who qualifies for the harder jobs. In order to pass the test a 32 is required and a perfect score would be a 99. Unfortunately, the ASVAB is just one loop that must be jumped through. (AFBMT)
In regards to American history, the creation of a politically neutral military began to form predominantly after the end of the American Civil War in 1865. Before the Post-Civil War era, the military had a strong
However, in 1950, the Services returned to using a single test, the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). This test was developed and modeled after the AGCT, and was the first test used in the military as a screening instrument. It measured the individual’s general ability to grasp military training within in the necessary allotted time, and it also offered a uniform measure of the individual’s potential performance in the military. Also, tests like The Army Classification Battery and the Navy Basic Test Battery were used to classify recruits into service specific jobs. In 1968, the ASVAB was introduced as a part of the Student Testing Program. The Air Force was the first to use the ASVAB in 1973, followed by the Marine Corps in 1974. However, the Army and Navy did not adopt the ASVAB until 1976, after the Department of Defense decided that all Services should use it for the purpose of screening enlistees and placing them in military jobs. The AFQT has been mostly retained and is now a subtest of the ASVAB. Since the introduction and adoption of the ASVAB, it has undergone many changes as far as content and scoring.

During the 19th century, the United States had two armies. Authorized by congress in 1789, the first was the standing army called as U.S. army. This force consisted of officers commissioned by Congress and men who joined for a five year period. In 1792. Congress created an auxiliary army called as militia. The U.S. army was a national force while the militia was the armies of various states. The militia could be called for federal service: to execute the laws, to suppress insurrections, and to repel invasions. This two level arrangement formed the basis of military establishment during the war. The U.S. army was not prepared for the war. The congress authorized 8613 men and officers for the war but, the actual number was fewer than 5500.
George Washington felt the need to make it official and have both the Senate and the House of Representatives declare the United States Military. There were men serving in the Continental Army already and they just transitioned over to the United States Military. In time, the military would divide itself into four branches – the four branches we know today, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marines.
The sole reason for the Army’s existence is to defend the Nation, its Commonwealths, possessions, and interests against all enemies. The
Sacrificing their lives serving the United States of America, military personnel at least deserve a worthy home. It is common for military families to move every few years and each time comes with a decision of living in a civilian home of their choice or an assigned family-sized home on the military base to which they are assigned. Both options have their pros and cons: for instance, their differences in privacy, cost effectiveness, and security are all major factors in which home location is the better option.

Although all five branches of the military have their own jobs, each of them work together in order to protect our country. Without one of them our safety would be compromised. Our military does so much for us and risks their lives just so we can sleep safe and sound. We owe them so much and that gratitude starts with understanding what it is they actually do. Hopefully this essay has helped inform you of the different branches of military and their jobs and sparked an interest to learn more. Our military does so much for us, the least we can do is show appreciation by ending our ignorance.
The United States military forces is composed of the Army, the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force and the Coast Guard. Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army
The evolution of the United States military and the notion of warfare can be traced back to the 1600s in Early America. The military has developed from a small militia to the world’s greatest within a few hundred years. In order to understand the changes in warfare, history, and the American way of war, the beginning must be understood. The Colonial period is one of the best examples because it was the period in which organized militias were constructed as a primary means of defense. The resulting colonial militia laws required every able-bodied male citizen, usually between the ages of 16 and 45, to participate and were responsible for equipping themselves with weapons. These units were utilized for small military operations which included seizing land, defending themselves, and being prepared for emergency service. Militia units became the backbone of the American
The aggregate total of US military personnel across all branches, including reserve troops, is roughly 2.36 million. Housing these men and women of the armed services is a priority for our nation. Most new recruits live on-base during basic training, and non-married members continue to live on-base in dormitory-type accommodations until they reach a certain rank – some times called pay grade – or other eligibility status that allows them to move into private quarters. Private quarters may be on-base, or off-base within a reasonable commute. Property managers interested in attracting military service members to their communities may want to familiarize themselves with housing allowance benefits.
