Constantly growing and consistently in high demand, careers in STEM (an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are attractive for many prospective students. My own personal interest lies in the field of computer engineering, which is categorized as a STEM career and reaps the benefits of such a classification. The field of computer engineering requires relatively modest education, but still rewards employees with a comfortable life, numerous benefits, and personal fulfillment.

In general, however, the educational requirements for a computer engineer are surprisingly modest. Computer engineers also require relatively minimal skills beyond those that are taught in their education. According to Spencer Thompson of Sokanu.com, "Engineers often work on teams and must be able to communicate with other types of engineers as well as with non-technical team members" (Thompson). Aurelio Locsin of the Houston Chronicle: Work adds that, "Hardware engineers require creative thinking to come up with technological and scientific discoveries that affect everyday consumers" (Locsin). Teamwork and creative thinking are a must in this career field, but beyond that, the job is relatively straightforward and requires no auxiliary skills.
The field of computer engineering, despite requiring relatively modest qualifications, offers a wealth of generous rewards. For instance, the salary offered is well above the national average even for newcomers with no experience with the job. According to Citlali Tolia, "In 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a median salary of about $108,430 for computer hardware engineers. Most computer engineers earned between $66,070 and $160,610" (Tolia). Considering the fact that the national average is a salary of just $44,000, a minimum salary of $66,000 is extremely promising, and the pay only grows parralel to one 's experience. The engineering field has the highest paid major, whereas the education field has the lowest paid major. "According to Census's calculations, the lifetime earnings of an education or arts major working in the service sector are actually lower than the average lifetime earnings of a high school graduate" (Owen and Sawhill 216). That statistic should really be taken into consideration when determining whether or not college is "worth it" or not. Becoming an engineer in this field would let me help innovate smarter, faster, and most importantly, cheaper technologies that could be distributed throughout the community to help better lives by letting people experience the global network and have a proper education when they normally wouldn’t be able to. Michael S. Teitelbaum argues in his report, “ The Myth of the Science and Engineering Shortage” that while it may be true that there is an increase in STEM jobs in the US, the fact is for the majority of STEM jobs the wages have been stagnant or declining, indicating that there is no demand for STEM graduates. Teitelbaum continues by stating that it is very simple to claim there is a shortage in STEM by hand-picking specialized fields in STEM that may currently have a shortage due to location and specific years, as a result of changing technology, But to state that all STEM related occupations are experiencing a shortage because a few specialized fields are experiencing a shortage is dangerous as it paints a false a narrative of reality to pursuers’ of STEM degrees. In addition when comparing the unemployment rate of occupations such as registered nurses, physicians, dentists, and lawyers to occupations in STEM, that proponents of STEM have valiantly claimed are experiencing a massive shortage, the unemployment for STEM occupations is staggering. With recent graduates suffering the most with unemployment rates in engineering and computer science above seven percent, as well as an unemployment rate hovering slightly below twelve percent for graduates in information systems ( Teitelbaum). Teitelbaum states that while it may be true that the US is consistently scoring in the middle in international assessments, they are still producing a third of all high-performing students in science and fourteen percent of high-performing students in math. Computer engineering is a very extensive, challenging career. To become a computer engineer you need years of experience and college education.
