Imagine a middle-age man and a young boy walking on a road of ashes in a post apocalyptic world. A novel called The Road by Cormac McCarthy describes a similar situation of where a father and son are trying to survive in post apocalyptic world. However, the emotion of hope forms inside of the two main characters throughout the novel. The father’s role is to protect his son from dangers, and keep them both alive as long as possible. The son’s role is to keep his father’s humanity, and being a media of hope and goodness to the father. In the novel, the father and the son are traveling toward the coast and south to seek hope. When the man and the son are searching in the manor house, they find “Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Canned hams. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water, paper plates, Plastic trashbags stuffed with blankets” (McCarthy 138). All the foods sources the father finds represent hopes for the father and the son to continue living as a normal human being. Because without food the father and son are not able to continue living and they might become cannibalistic. Another scene in the novel that the father finds resources of useful tools is hope is when the father and the son are about to leave the beach, the father went back to the ship and do one last search. In the last search the father is able find items under the deck of the ship. One of the items is a composite toolbox, “Inside was a yellow plastic flashlight, an electric strobebeacon powered by a drycell, a first-aid kit. A yellow plastic EPIRB. And a black plastic case about the size of a book” (McCarthy 240). The first-aid kit the father find represents hope to the father and the son because when the father and son are walking in a town, and when they approach the “last sad wooden building” the father and the son gets attack by a man with bow. The father is trying to protect the boy so he uses his body on top of the boy to prevent the arrow shot to the boy. As a result the father is hit at the leg by an arrow, however, because the father has the first-aid kit, the father is able to fix the injury to prevent large amount of blood loss which might result in
