Cormac McCarthy’s The Road portrays a gripping tale of survival of a father and son across a post-apocalyptic world that is devoured by marauders and cannibals who have abandoned all of their beliefs, morals and values and do anything to survive. In contrast, the two protagonists are portrayed as the ‘good guys’ who carry the ‘fire’, and try to survive in the obliterated world. Every author creates some type of conflict to have the reader sitting on the edge of their seats whether the conflict be man versus man, man versus self, or man versus nature. The novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy wrote a story about both a man and a boy who have particularly conflicting characteristics when it comes to decision making. The boy in the story is very optimistic about everything and the man can be pessimistic when either deciding on what to do or when thinking about life or the future. In addition, both characters have different outlooks and personalities that can sometimes collide.

In the book The Road, written by Cormac McCarthy, a father and a boy are traveling towards what they hope is survival. They are in a post-apocalyptic world where all is lost.

The novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy was published on September 26, 2006. The Road depicts the struggle for survival between a father and a son. In the gray and ash covered world, featureless, and bleak, all that remains is a corrupted world where destruction will bestow upon anyone who comes in its wake. Nevertheless, in a post-apocalyptic world, devastation isn’t the only adversity they have to withstand, rather, the position it puts the human race. The lack of food caused many survivors become cannibals and roam the roads looking for victims. However, hope played a significant role in their journey of obtaining survival. The father and son were seen continuously encouraging and reminding one another to keep faith alive by carrying the “fire” in their hearts. Cormac McCarthy implies in his novel, The Road that the boy is seen as the man’s only will to live and his son’s divine spirit that inspired him to be good-hearted, which proves that people can survive through anything, as long as they have something worth fighting for.

As one is put through times of strife and struggle, an individual begins to lose their sense of human moral and switch into survival mode. Their main focus is their own survival, not of another's. In the post-apocalyptic novel, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, a father and son travel along the road towards the coast, while battling to survive the harsh weather and scarce food supply, as well as avoid any threats that could do them harm. Throughout their journey along the road, the father and son are exposed to the horrid remnants of humanity. As a result, the father and son constantly refer to themselves as “the good guys” and that they “carry the fire”, meaning they carry the last existing spark of humanity within themselves. This further prompted the father to go on a hunt to find him with the pistol and have a want to kill him. Once they had found the thief, the father was in rage. The boy pleaded, “Papa please don’t kill the man” (256). Then the father prompted the thief to take off everything and put it in the cart. The thief begged him and told the father “Come on. Listen to the kid” (257). Later, once they father and boy had left, the boy would not stop crying. The boy pleaded to his father, “Just help him, Papa. Just help him” (259). Here was a turning point of the book because the father decided to listen to his son and returned the clothes to the road for the thief to come fetch. The father had to trust the boy and give help to others that actually needed it for once, instead of pretending to be the ‘good

The Road” by Cormac McCarthy reveals a character, who is nameless throughout the story, is the son of the father shown also. The boy is shown to be the only light to his father as the mother wasn't in the picture, she is presumably dead as she wanted to escape the post-apocalyptic world. The boy is shown to symbolize hope for the future with compassion and cooperation throughout the journey with his father. I can relate to the boy as in one example he helps convince his father to let Ely, an old man who they came upon while traveling, join them at dinner time. “We could cook something on the stove. He could eat with us,”(pg. 85) this quote portrays how the boy compassion was viewed to his father and gave him hope to keep going in the world.

The son however is the ‘faith’ within the story. He is the hope for a better future. The son is more trusting towards others and therefore becomes upset and quiet when his father doesn’t agree with him. “I’m afraid for that little boy” – The son has never seen another young boy and is frightened for him but his father shrugs off his pleas to help him and says “I know but he’ll be alright”. Towards the end of the book it appears that the father and his son become distant to each other due to their diverse personalities. It could however be seen that the son is a lot more knowledgeable about dangers and therefore does not need his father as much.

Released in 2006, the novel has won awards such as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award (Wilson). Oprah Winfrey also selected the book for her book club ("Cormac McCarthy”). The author, Cormac McCarthy, was born in 1933 in Rhode Island and is said to have wrote the novel because of his son and their relationship. The Road centers around a boy and his father while they try to survive after an unknown disaster occurs. While some people may argue that the unusual style takes away from the novel, it adds to the tone and meaning of the work.

In order for a child to live in a complete and happy family, the paternal love plays a major role in a child’s life, especially the love of a father which is as much important as a mother’s love. Moreover, a father’s love is one of the greatest influences on the child’s personality development throughout his/her life. A father’s love brings a sense of protection of security in a child. Early on in the novel, the reader begins to learn that the The Man and The Boy have a very close and intimate bond. Rather than causing a strain on the their relationship, the isolation that constantly follows the pair on The Road actually made their bond as father and son stronger . Traveling along The Road by themselves causes The Man and The Boy’s relationship to become extremely codependent. The Boy relies on The Man like any child would rely on their father. The Boy completely counts on The Man for everything, including food, shelter, clothes, and everything else that is needed to survive on The Road. The Man keeps them safe from the “bad guys” and keeps them alive and as healthy as he can. The Boy’s needs are always put before The Man’s needs. However, The Man depends upon The Boy just as much as The Boy depends on him. If it weren’t for The Boy, The Man would have been dead a long time ago. The only reason that he has survived this long is because of The Boy. Making sure The Boy survives is the only meaning that The Man has to his life. The Boy’s continued existence is the most influential motivation

In the novel, The Road by Cormac McCarthy (2006), a boy and his father have to learn how to survive in an apocalypse. However, the father was fortunate enough to grow up in a so-called normal life, which means, no apocalypse, and now he is watching his son suffer through this horrible life, that he himself, as a child, never went through. Papa watches as his son is hanging on to hope by a string and starts realizing that he needs him more than ever, which then has him decide to show him love in the darkest of times.

In this post apocalyptic world the man and boy or fight to stay alive while keeping their humanity. As well as searching for what humanity is left in this kill or be killed cannibalistic planet. As their time journeying down the road increases, so do the dangers they face to survive. The more they overcome the more hope thrives in them showing that in even in the most catastrophic events having hope helps them get closer to finding the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope is the reason why, the father and son travel to find shelter, hope is the reason why they haven’t giving up on humanity and the son is the father’s hope that is the reason why he is still alive.
