The Epic of Gilgamesh dates back to the time of the Sumerians, where it was discovered during the third millennium which is around 2000 B.C.E. It is widely known as one of the first pieces of writing discovered because many works around that time were destroyed or did not survive. Because it is one of the first pieces of literature, the author is unknown. The Epic of Gilgamesh was shared through word of mouth long before it was ever written down, making it even more difficult to find the original source. Craig mentions that there were many epic poems like Gilgamesh, that were told about the power of the gods, indicating that their lives were designed around serving them. Knowing this information, the assumption could be made that The Epic of Gilgamesh was written to emphasize the gods’ power and the short lives that the people themselves had. This source tells us that Sumerians believed that their intention in life was to serve and listen to the gods. They must worship, entertain and devote their lives to pleasing them.
