The Effects of Technology in Education
Modern technology has penetrated every aspect of our lives and made great impacts on our daily activities, especially in the area of education. The continuous infusion of technology in education has become an unchangeable tendency. Given the increased use of technology in education, much research has been done on the value of technology in education. However, none of the studies have answered all of the questions that are essential to determining whether continuous infusion of new technologies in education can improve the quality of education. Since a clear answer to this question is vital to help educational organizations to make decisions on how much

One of the drawbacks mentioned in the article “Technology: A Catalyst for Teaching and Learning in the Classroom,” is that technology is very expensive, requires ongoing support and constant upgrades, and is not as cost effective as other investments in education (Valdez 21). Some critics think technology is a waste of scarce resources in education (Valdez 22), because overspending in technology can leave inadequate funds for other pressing needs in education. The funds invested in new technologies can instead be invested in other ways such as arts, science laboratories and shops that allow for more hands-on learning (Valdez 21). Well balanced funding for all essential elements in education is an important strategy to follow in the reality of scarce resources in education.
As stated by the author Sue Ferguson in the article “How Computers Make Our Kids Stupid,” computers and the internet distract students from real learning, which is evident by the poor academic achievement associated with excessive and improper use of computers and internet (Ferguson 2). This view is supported by a massive study conducted by University of Munich economists Thomas Fuchs and Ludger Woessmann in November, 2004, with a subject pool of 174,000 15 year-olds in reading, 97,000 each in math and
One topic that will continue to bring contribution to education is technology inside the classroom. Elementary school all the way up to college and even further up to Doctorates programs will continue to face the rapid changes in society. To stay on-top and updated with the world, there is no option but to convert with society to technology. One side will continue to say technology is beneficial to everyone that has something to do with education. Now, it is not uncommon to still have others say, “technology has its pros, but the good doesn’t not out weigh the bad in this situation”. To look at each side and say they are right or wrong is undoubtable but, the education system must find the balance and the between of paper mixed with some technology.
Despite recent efforts in innovation, the rise of technology and the consistent changing of pedagogy, a range of studies have recently shown that students may be exiting the schooling system because of the disconnect between this system and the new digital world which ‘digital natives’ (ref) have become accustomed to in their formative years.
There is much in the literature regarding the use of technology in education. According to Dede (2009), Banister (2010), Peled and Schocken (2014), my topic can be characterized as technology in education is an effective tool for motivating student engagement, increasing academic success, and providing new environments for students to learn. Thus, the more technology that is incorporated in a students’ earlier grades, the more inclined they will be to prefer that type of instruction in their latter years. It is an important topic with respect to education because the wave of new technology is increasing at rate never before seen in the field of education. These articles track the study of technology use in the field, and how they are beneficial for my study of technology in education. All of the articles support the idea of the use of technology in education, and each represent a different aspect in which technology can improve a child’s education.
In current times, technology has become such a big part of life, and most people would not be able to live without it. It has become very prevalent in education today, but technology appears to be more detrimental than beneficial. It has become the world’s main focus of the educational system, and although it has been useful to have, the disadvantages should not be ignored. Technology has clearly made an impact on society and education, but an inadequate amount of evidence has surfaced to justify that it is helping students and the community. Because of the technological advances in education, students’ learning is hindered because they have become accustomed to relying on it, and the learning environment is limited to fancy, expensive technology.
The impact on technology in the classroom has opened many new windows for educators. Technology can be used in various ways while working in a classroom, whether that be a first grade classroom or a class of juniors in high school. Technology can help our students widen their knowledge. When planning lessons, it is important that teachers incorporate some types of technology. When technology is used in your lessons, the students will be able to achieve their learning goals. While using technology in the classrooms, teachers and students are able to connect with others around the world, making technology a useful tool in building your classroom into a global learning community. The use of technology has been able to enhance and individualize learning as well. While using technology it is important to remember to connect the content being and the specific learning goals, otherwise the use of technology won’t be as helpful during the lesson. The use of technology will supplement instruction, allowing students to achieve content learning goals. When implementing technology into your classroom, it is important that you incorporate these aspects into your planning and teaching.
As each day goes by, the world continues to invent new ways to use and enjoy technology. Humans live in a society where there’s a television in every restaurant, a computer in every classroom, and smartphone in every person’s hand. This new rise of technology affects all types of people, especially young children. Teachers and educators all around the world embrace technology because they believe that children gain academic benefits from it, leading to a smarter and more educated world. While having access to screen time as a young child can help them sharpen their brain skills, many parents know that the harms outweighs the benefits. They know that an extended amount of screen time leads to physical and psychological damage in their children, all while impairing their social skill and actually decreasing academic performance.
This paper explores the addition of technology in schools and effects it has on students. The purpose of the research was to reveal that the positives of adding technology outweigh the negatives. Technology has the power to enhance learning for students and to overall create a better learning experience for everyone. This is proven by showing examples of schools that have already implemented technology in the classroom and the positive results that came with it, as well as the negatives and worries many people have with technology, and how to avoid it. Overall the research has shown that students have a better time learning with the addition of technology, and that negatives of technology can be easily avoided.
The world is an ever changing environment that is constantly shaping how we function at home, work, and school. The largest factor of change seems to be the rate at which technology is being developed and is becoming a part of our everyday life. One of the largest arguments with the advancing technology is whether or not it’s good for teaching and learning purposes in the classroom. From email to online classes, computers are defiantly manipulating our lives, and can enhance learning in the classroom in various ways. The growing popularity of technology emphasizes the importance for students and administrators to support and encourage computer technology in our education system. The use of technology in the classroom, especially the use of
In my experience, doing research away from Caltech allows for students to learn how research is done at other institutions while gaining a new perspective on another part of the world. In the summer of 2017, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Franz Kaertner and Dr. Phillip Keathley at MIT in the Optics and Quantum Electronics group. I was introduced to optoelectronic devices and optical-field-controlled emission of electrons. During the ten weeks of my SURF, we made significant progress on the problem of determining if the emission was through field-dependent tunneling. However, to show field-dependency, we needed very fine intensity control. We tackled this problem of fine intensity control in the first half of my SURF using an Arduino
As the suggestions of constructivism appear on the fringes of education, there is a polarizing argument about what place technology has in schools. Students are coming to school with computers in the form of phones, tablets, or laptops in their pockets and backpacks. Some schools are leading the charge with BYOD (bring your own device) or BYOT (bring your own technology) initiatives. However, there are still districts, schools, and teachers who will not allow technology into their classrooms. Many schools and teachers want to avoid the potential problems, so they adopt a no phone policy, while other schools are trying to integrate technology and BYOD initiatives. This literature review will examine research related to technology
“Technology may empower, but to what end will that power be used?” said Levine in I Surf, Therefore I Am (224). The empowerment of technology simply comes down to the way it is used. More recently; however, the Internet has become some sort of replacement in the way students learn today. With the use of the Internet and little to no interaction with physical books, people can become uneducated rather easily. In today’s society, most everyone has access to the Internet; however, it is the way we use it that helps determine our success.
According to Thomas Jefferson, “If the children are untaught, their ignorance and vices will in future life cost us much dearer in their consequences than it would have done in their correction by a good education”(Vasudeva).Technology has impacted every aspect of most people’s life and education is no exception (Purdue). The education process has evolved as more people make use of technological devices and so education no longer starts or ends in the classroom. Technology in education is like a double edged sword, you can either use it to your advantage or to your disadvantage. People may say that technology does nothing but
Technology has been recognized as a fundamental part of the education process, ranging from laptop computers in high school classrooms to assistive technology advancing disabled students. Computers are used in classrooms everywhere, designed into various forms. Education institutes pride themselves on their basis of connectivity with the world and themselves. Laptops, more specially Chromebooks, have invaded their way into the classroom in order to enhance student to student and student to staff communication (Cater). The improvement of students in modern schooling is directly linked to the growth of technology in the classroom, which enables the ability to communicate easier. (Roschelle). In a quote by Cater he states, “Laptop computers have become commonplace in K-12 and college classrooms.” The computer technology benefits in classrooms especially affect the coursework of mathematics. This modern technology allows students to collaborate with each other, teachers, and tutors in a way that technology ten years previous would not allow. Students are able to receive the tools needed to understand the fundamental concepts of mathematics at any time of the day. “Students can receive feedback when they create a notation that is incorrect” (Roschelle). This access to online help and instant feedback has shown to help inner-city middle school students, as well as college students (Roshelle). The benefits of technology have also changed the curriculum of English courses throughout schooling institutions. Technology allows students more freedom to receive and give feedback on their writing. This is very similar to the benefits of technology in mathematics. Students are able to access a plethora of peer review sources through the use of technology (Papadopoulos). As well, assistive technology has changed and still is changing the lives of disabled students in schools. Pencil grips, picture boards, large keyboards, touch screens, speech synthesizers, voice recognition systems, talking calculators, tape recorders, and optical character recognition systems are only a few of the life changing technologies that assist in the productive learning process in education (“Assistive Technology…”).
The implementation of technology in the classroom is a pressing topic in education. There are both positive and negative arguments when discussing the impact of technology on a student’s ability to learn. Three parties play a role in the success of technology in the classroom, including the teacher, student, and parent. Along with the introduction of technology comes new terms that must be understood.
Ipads. iPods. Chromebooks. Smartphones. Smartboards. Tablets. Laptops. 3D Printers. Technology. When asked about the importance of technology in education today, I realize that the question is extremely broad and evasive. And at the same time, I understand that the question is an important one. Technology is a set of tools for school staff, but it is only a set of tools. Some forms of technology can assist a great teacher to be even better, but will not necessarily help a bad teacher be good.
