This teaching session is conducted to educate both parents and children ages of 6 through 12 about the importance of physical activity in children with the goal of increasing physical activity levels. Cardiovascular and pulmonary problems are two growing issues in relation to an increase in the obesity rate of today’s society. An unhealthy lifestyle begins in the early stages of life in result of lack of education about the topic. Physical activity is becoming a concern for not only adults but also a concern for young children. These benefits can include maintaining a healthy weight for one’s age group, essentially making everyday life easier, and lowering the risks of many diseases that can occur anytime throughout life such as coronary heart disease (CHD), diabetes, cancer, and even depression (NHLBI, 2011). Weight problems, either overweight or obese, are issues many struggle with in today’s society which can result in long-term effects such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and overall unhealthy lifestyle. Being physically active for even a small amount a day can decrease the risks of having these common problems. If physical activity is taught to be a lifestyle early on in life, then it will become a routine and create a more active, healthier society as a whole.
Target Audience
As mentioned earlier, physical activity can be performed by everyone and can benefit everyone no matter the gender, race, or age. In today’s society, lack of physical activity is occurring all throughout people’s lifetime because they are not being adapted to the active lifestyle in the early ages. What does this mean for children? There is a concern about the low physical activity level of children ages 6-12 as a result of sedentary pursuits such as watching television and playing video games and an increase risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes (Gomes, dos Santos, Zhu, Eisenmann, & Maia, 2014). Children now spend more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen whether it be a television, computer, smartphone, or playing video games (cite). No I didn’t stutter, no I’m not exaggerating, seven and a half hours a day, can you believe that? As sad as it is, I’m unfortunately not surprised. Society continues to rapidly evolve as we continue to become consumed by technology and the latest iphone. I’m not going to lie, I do love my iphone and I fall guilty to spending more time than I would like on my phone, watching tv, or on my laptop. Obesity is a serious problem in the United States, more than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle strengthening activities, and more than 80% of adolescents do not do enough aerobic physical activity to meet the guidelines for youth. (cite) This is an interesting piece of information. Most likely parents who do not exercise, do not motivate their children to exercise either. That’s why the percentages for adults and adolescents are so similar. Our youth need to be guided in the right direction, so we have a healthier world for future generations to come. In today’s society, technology has played a big role in everyone’s lives and has taken over. Kids today stay inside and play on the computer, watch TV, play video games, or mess with tablets and smartphones. Several people find other, more entertaining things to do than play outside and be active. Some of the times, physical education in schools is the only physical activity students have on a daily basis (“Obesity”). Kids and teenagers would much rather be wrapped up in a social network than going for a job or going to the gym. Back in the day, playing outside was one of the few entertainments. Parents have no discipline and let their children do what they want to their bodies. Technology has caused people to be less active and not as self-controlled causing them to be obese or overweight later in life.
Physical activity also has benefits for children's social and emotional development and cognitive development. These benefits include being part of a team and making friends through group sports, which have a major impact on social and emotional development. The effect of obesity on children is closely linked to many bad health habits such as diet, smoking and drug use which in turn can affect a child's academic performance (Goran et al., 1999). Physical activity, if encouraged at a young age, can reduce the likelihood of children developing these behaviours and focus on their academic performance and cognitive development. As children in this age range are in their fundamental development stage, it is important that educators and parents alike, teach children about the importance of physical activity at a young age in order to prevent health and social well-being problems in their adult years.

Physical activity is essential for children; therefore sport participation has many physical benefits for youths (Willox, 1994). In the United States there is a very unhealthy trend of physically unfit children going on.
