Effective communication of workers with other workers and their employers plays a key role in the development of a company. Various sorts of interactions take place between workers in a workplace. Some of them may seem to be included in interruptions during work. In a research dealing with these interruptions, Conaill and Frohlich (1995), their results showed that "in most cases, (64%), the recipient and the initiator received some benefit from the conversation. However in just over 40% of interruptions the recipient did not resume the work they were doing prior to the interruption." Furthermore, it allows contact of people who are geographically far from each other.
According to Turner, Qvarfordt, Biehl, Golovchinsky and Back (2010), "Different tools support different levels of information, expressiveness and context." People use the communication tools as per their requirement. Some provide face to face communication while others are only restricted to written information. On the other hand, some of them such as emails can save you a record of the conversation while others lack this service.
There is yet another perspective to be considered. It is related to the level of information a communication media can support through its communicating channel. This is most commonly referred to as bandwidth of the media.
According to Nardi (2005), "Three dimensions of connection that activate readiness are proposed: affinity, commitment and attention." These three constitutes a space for connection between people. An appropriate media is that which provides its users a room for connecting themselves to each other. A rich media ensures the delivery of the information as quickly and as much as possible, including facial expressions; tone etc., so as to maintain a proper communication.

Understanding effective communication in a medical setting helps hospitals and doctor offices develop a work environment that is able to communicate effectively with coworker, patients and doctors in order to take of the patients needs. Listening, clarity and Patience are three main keys to effective communication within a workplace. In this paper, the author will describe an experience within the medical field work place where communication was effective.
Jason Fried argues that bringing people together to work in the same physical location creates distractions that inhibit individual employees’ ability to get their work done. Mr Fried’s identifies managers and meetings as a main cause of distraction in the workplace, but face to face communication is the real focus of his argument. Meetings and managers often interrupt employees from the task that they are working on. Employees have little or no control over when these interruptions will take place. After these interruptions, individuals have to reset their train of thought after the interruption, which then adds to the amount of time required to complete the task that they are working on.
The workplace is an environment where more and more Americans are spending significant portions of their time. In fact, 25 million workers reported spending at least 49 hours a week at work, (Schabner, 2013). This means that having effective communication in the workplace is becoming increasingly important. Not just to improve business practices, but to improve the quality of both employer AND employee satisfaction. Effective interpersonal communication is the most important aspect in determining the success of workplace practices. Effective interpersonal communication includes practices such as honesty, clarity, and mutual respect.

There were many influential points revealed in the four TED talks about communication skills and deeper ideas of how conversations and ideas affect everyone. The TED talks informed me of things that are important in conversations and noticing your own body language. Communication is powerful because it can change a person if it is used appropriately. The four TED talks includes: Interpersonal Communication, 5 Ways to listen better, Your body language may shape who you are, and TED’s secret to great public speaking. The ideas covered in each video will be summarized and explain how I plan to implement them to help improve my studies and career.

Communication should be clear, concise, and succinct to avoid any room for misinterpretation; Negative nonverbal cues such as, facial expressions, hand gestures, and body language, could discredit the person-to-person conversation. Communication scholars argue that one should not assume that more communication is equated with better communication (Keyton, 2013, p. 154), especially with the added use of nonverbal cues. It is understood that interpersonal communication is important, but whether it changes the landscape of a business for the better is another question, altogether. There are both formal and informal communications in the workplace; Formal, dealing with work decisions and the latter, dealing with friendships and non-work-related banter.
Within nursing, there is a very delicate balance between a nurse and her patient that must be maintained if the patient is to receive the care that he or she is entitled to receive. The patient must feel comfortable trusting his nurse to hear his needs and respond to them appropriately and in order for this to be the case, the nurse must first provide therapeutic communication effective enough to elicit such a response in her patient.
