Introduction I chose to discuss Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning for this final project. Since 1999, the debate on the differences and similarities between traditional and online learning has been ongoing. Notably, this was the time when institutes began to use internet as a way of conveying distant education. Despite the differences that are there, it is worth noting that they are being narrowed down since technology is emerging prevalently. These facts beg the question; how do the two learning formats differ and what can one expect during transition to eLearning? Before seeking answers to this question, it is worth mentioning that I chose this topic because even though I am currently taking online classes, I wanted to research and learn more about the different benefits of online learning. Also, I am interested in researching on the major differences between online learning and traditional learning. Topic Overview The article that will be associated with my topic is “Why Online Education works” by Alex Tabarrok. Through this project, I will be focusing on why I think online learning works better than traditional learning as well as the downside it may bring. In the article Alex Tabarrok states that in 2009 he gave a TED talk on economic of growth that was about 15 minutes long, which had 700,000 views. With his talk shows he is able to reach more students online with his talk videos than offline students. The article provides a lot of great information on how
Many students have a difficult time choosing between online education and traditional education. Both styles of education offer advantages and disadvantages to the student. There are many things to consider when making this life altering decision, such as, cost, convenience, time, social interaction, and technology. This information is meant to inform prospective students looking to further their education of the pros and cons of both online education and traditional education. Taking the steps to further your education is a big decision and one that should not be taken lightly. One should weigh all of his/her options and be well informed and certain of their choice before taking that leap.
The premise or premises for the argument is/are teaching students 30 at a time is expensive and becoming relatively more expensive. The productivity of teaching, measured in, say, kilobytes transmitted from teacher to student per unit of time, hasn’t increased much. Thus, the opportunity cost of teaching has increased, an example of what’s known as Baumol’s cost disease. Teaching has remained economic only because the value of each kilobyte transmitted has increased due to discoveries in (some) other fields. Online education, however, dramatically increases the productivity of teaching This topic is relevant and being
When deciding to take college courses there are many choices you have to make. One of the more important choices is where you plan to take your classes. Online classes are becoming increasingly popular because they can be easier to fit into a busy schedule, but some people still argue that nothing beats a traditional classroom setting. Having the option of online classes makes continuing an education more appealing to people that have to balance many other responsibilities like family, jobs, etc.
Which type of learning is better, traditional or online? As we all know, attending a college or university is nothing new. For the longest time the biggest issues for students were which school to attend and how to pay for it. However, with new and constant developments in modern technology these students are faced with a new problem: which type of learning is better, traditional or online? Students are not the only ones dealing with this dilemma; schools are also presented with the same issue. Not only do schools have to be concerned with which type of learning is best for their students but also which type of
In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).
With high speed internet available to potential students of all economic levels, schools are opting to implement online classes into their traditional teaching curriculum. As a result, our society is divided in two different ways of thinking on the education. Some believe the modern method is better than the traditional method of teaching. Personally, I believe both methods should balance one another instead of attempting to substitute one another; this way their purpose of educating will be far more successful.
Learning is more than just receiving information. Traditionally learning was to be in campus, where students would interact with one a another, there were no other ways for learners to get educated beside going to the classroom and listening to the instructor. Nowadays the Internet has brought different ways for people to receive information, such as getting education and degrees online. A few years ago online education was never thinkable, and yet it has become to reality and it is widely expanding with popularity. Online education is a type of educational instruction that delivers learning to individuals to their own homes, and it is getting very popular among nontraditional student and others. Individuals prefer online education
Advocates and supporters of distance learning believe that it is more profitable to study online vices face-to-face instruction. Regardless, online instruction is more beneficial for many due to the flexible programs offered, cost effectiveness, time management, increased personal values and self-discipline, dedication, self-obligation. The Literature Review To better understand the controversy between online instruction vs. classroom instruction there are several peers reviewed journals and thesis papers dedicated to bringing attention to the disadvantages and advantages of online instruction vs. classroom instruction. Equally, there are debates on the benefits and pitfalls of which method is more efficient to obtain a degree. Further- more, this paper will explain what online education is, its increasing popularity and its origin and the rapid growth of an online college education. Moreover, to better account for the focus of this paper, a virtual study with that of traditional classroom is explained throughout this article. Additionally, the so-called short-coming of online education are discussed in contrast to that of regular classroom instruction. The History of Online Education Online or virtual learning is an effective strategy that has been around, but as time has progressed technology is becoming more modernized. In the written
Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today’s society. Online classes are a cost-effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it’s not a traditional learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university.
The differences seem to be profound and similar at the same time with online learning and traditional classroom education . The online tool of technology has the relationship of human and machine conversing , working as a unit , impersonal , with a no interaction as with a human being as teacher . In that reality the teaching basically is deleted where the student is teaching their selves to a certain extent with learning also. With this you only find information that is updated for the learning experience of the student , this is the similarity with classroom learning .For the teacher also gives information also derived from updated curriculum works .
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has infused into education field since the past few years and brought new shifts to teaching and learning process by introducing a new concept known as 'e-learning'. Over the past decades, the world of education has been improved from day to day by the fast and rapid revolution of ICT which eventually raises the demands for online learning or e-learning. E-learning is well defined as a learning process that fully utilises electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of the classroom and it is well known for distance learning. This kind of learning allows learners to continuously learning outside of the traditional classroom with their own control, pace and time. In simpler explanation, e-learning is a course or program that is delivered online. According to Wang (2010), online learning or e-learning has been widely used in higher education, and a large amount of studies have been conducted to explore both of its strengths and weaknesses. However, literature
The advancement in technology has introduced a new education program that creates diversity in the learning systems. Today, many institutions of higher learning are or have introduced an online program that allows students all over the world to pursue their academic dreams using their computers. While this is an important innovative idea, most colleges and universities still maintain the traditional classroom setup where students interact with the educator on a face-to-face basis. Apparently, both programs achieve the objective of the education system which is to provide knowledge and skills to the learners. However, the two have multiple differences that make each unique and favored by some students than the other. Therefore, this essay examines the differences and similarities between the on online education and traditional education. The traditional and online educational programs are similar and different in their use of learning materials, teacher instructions, student assessment, and assignments.
Education has undergone significant changes because of the development of information and communication technology over the 21st century (Lin & Jou, 2012:2). As a convenient and inexpensive way to gain knowledge while pursuing higher education, online learning, a form of training or teaching that takes place over the Internet, has been considered as an alternative to traditional classroom learning (Zhang et al, 2004). This essay will argue that even though online learning has benefit such as flexibility which could outweigh traditional learning, traditional classroom learning might still not be entirely replaced. This essay will discuss positive and negative aspects of online and traditional learning in terms of four criteria:
Education is an important part of people’s lives; it will either make them or break them in the future depending on the careers they choose. Education is greatly diverse today in comparison to the 1950s because of advancements in teaching and other great inventions that provide easier techniques of teaching. One major issue that has been raised is distant learning courses and online education.
Online teaching is defined as any educational activity that requires a student to complete some learning or assessment activity via a personal computer and a connection to a network (Murdoch University Academic Council 1999). This network connection is usually to the Internet (Demirdjian 2002). It is a seen by the Murdoch University Academic Council as a teaching and learning technology, not a method of study (2002), but this depends on how it is to be used and by whom. For example, distance education student using online teaching would be more inclined to see it as a study method than a QUT student who uses online teaching to download and print lecture notes to attend a lecture on campus.
