Democratic Government VS Oligarchy Government
“The government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.” Mark Twain
Democracy and Oligarcy as forms of government have been in existence for a long period of time, both terms first appeared in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought. Both forms of government exist in the modern world, but which form of government is more better, there is a question. So, in my essay I will compare Democratic and Oligarchy Governments to understand which form of them is the best. It is important

In a democracy, if people are unhappy, they can raise their voices through various platforms such as the media. However, in Oligarchy government, common people might not be granted fundamental rights which are essential for any person to live a good life. If you compare Oligarchy vs Democracy on how stable a government these can provide, then certainly dictatorship wins hands down. Oligarchy government often resort to violent methods to curb any kind of public uprisings to protect its power and ruling status in the country. Robert Michels believed that any political system eventually evolves into an oligarchy. He called this the iron law of oligarchy. According to this school of thought, modern democracies should be considered as oligarchies. Unfortunately, Oligarchy Governments really hide under the name of democratic. As an example, a number of former Soviet states, including Ukraine. Officially, we live in a democratic state, but we all know who is at the helm of state power. Ukraine is called a democratic state, which governed by a few oligarchic clans. Every form of government is bound to have some shortfalls. Different people have different views about the various political systems. But in today's world, democracy is considered to be the best form of government, reason being that people are treated equally and have full rights to live a life of their liking. Unlike a Oligarchy government is not considered to be a
Oligarchy is the practice of a small group of people governing the states.1 Democracy is a system of government by the whole population, or all the eligible members of a state.2 The word Democracy comes from two Greek words, demo, which means people, and kratos, which means power, literally translating into the power of the people.3 The main influential form of government in the United States ¬¬¬was democracy. Democracy was created by a magistrate in Athens named Solon in an attempt to ease social tensions between the poor and the rich citizens in Athens. The Athenians as a whole appointed Solon, who was appointed the task of easing tensions and created laws based on balance, justice and good order, which gave power to the
In the authoritarian government the way that they come into power is either by force or by inheritance. They don’t get to choose if they want to rule a country or not and democracy government does. They way that democracy government comes into power is by election votes. People get to choose if they want to be in power of our country and we get the freedom to vote.
Oligarchy is a small group of people having control of a country or institution. The society today is becoming more like oligarchy. In, past years we have seen many groups that want to take over the world and rule it based on their religion or beliefs.
Some forms of government can be horrible and unjust, but other types, when they are taken seriously, can be great. If you are a fascist, then tyranny might be the best for you...if you are ruling. Other times, if you have a group of people who only trust their belief of a god or gods, then you might want to live under theocracy. There are many forms of government, with some that fit more than others, and some that just don’t fit at all.
Democracy while it lasts long is bloodier than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide - John Adams
As addressed earlier, democracy serves the country based on representation of the population. This means that citizens make decisions on certain issues and are represented by their delegates on other difficulties. However, there is a great controversy if this really the greatest arrangement of government. Firstly, many voters are uneducated and vote on problems that they have no knowledge about and put the populace in great danger. For example, when choosing a president to lead the nation, many registered voters don’t do proper research on the delegates’ platforms and make their choices based on irrelevant information. Additionally, it is very difficult to properly count all the votes and announce the winner. Therefore, many times numbers are fathomed or altered to benefit a specific candidate and the general public is not really being represented. On the other hand, dictatorships also have many problems. For one, leaders with absolute power abolish any voice of the individuals of society and consequently policies usually benefit the men on top. Even leaders who intend to support their citizens are usually affected by the great power they have and become very controlling and
In America, we pride ourselves on being a democracy and having choices, when in fact, it is only a political illusion. In the Constitution of the United States (which we are all held accountable to abide by), it states that we are a republic with regard to the people’s desire to be a democracy, yet there is much evidence that leans towards America being an oligarchy. While a republic is a country which elects representatives to make government decisions on their behalf, an oligarchy is a system in which a small group of people controls the country. The debate of American being an oligarchy assumes that elites have power in many aspects of government, such as the Electoral College and the election process,
From the early 1840s to the present day, a democracy can be described as a flawed establishment which has been shaped by the power of wealth and control, complex social relations, and most importantly the people’s desire to live a fulfilling life. Throughout this time period the principles of democracy, such as equality, protection of the people’s interest, and promotion of human rights were shifting in order to increase the democracy efficiency. Therefore the continued importance of the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and Constitution remain significant since, in American today, democracy is a system that is continuously being shaped by the people within it.
Democratic and nondemocratic regimes are two broad categories in which all countries are able to fit into. Within each of the two regimes, there is a high degree of variance. Even though a majority of countries are currently categorized as democratic, nondemocratic countries still exist throughout the world in countries such as Russia and China. Major differences exist between the two regimes; however, they do share similar aspects and goals for their respective countries.
For the sake of justice, people most have the power to rule themselves. This is what Democracy proponents believe. They believe democracy is the key to a successful nation no matter it is a tyranny democracy or any other kind of democracy, it is still democracy, and it is still the representation for the people’s voice. Everybody is allowed to participate in the country’s
Who would think Oligarchy has so many advantages and benefits? As an oligarch, I would like to introduce the pros of Oligarchy to the citizens. The structure of Oligarchy makes the decision- making process fast and easy. Parliament and the constitution are absent in oligarchy. The decisions in oligarchy are made rapidly. The agreements get accepted quickly because it’s made by a handful number of people. Oligarchs are knowledgeable and intelligent individual and everyone is capable of making a wise decision. In Oligarchy, women get the opportunity to advance to the higher position in power. People don’t have to be wealthy to advance to a better position; they only have to have knowledge and creativity. A competent person, who serves
Aristotle says that justice is thought of as equality among all, there is a disregard to merit (p.172). In a society, there is usually more poor people and because there is this demand of equality then the majority rule (p.174). Mob rule is then authoritative. All governments have their forms, which are good and are bad. Democracy to Aristotle is not the best regime because it is ruled by the poor or the ones that need from the government. Government is not chosen by those who pursue virtue, but instead pursue wealth. The democratic principle is that of freedom, wealth, and birth. Not virtue. He believes the best regime would not be exactly a democracy but a polity that would be a combination of freedom, wealth, birth and virtue. The best regime has ideal conditions in which it becomes a predictable regime and consists of values, choices, the inanimate, elements of the class of workers, and the education of rulers. Democracy has a big defect in that it does not have intelligence or wisdom. It is the rule of many. It is based on the idea of happiness by following pleasures (p.48). Democracy comes into play when the majority revolt against the oligarchy because of the ideas of freedom. The problem with it is that people are pursuing their pleasures, not thinking of the state as a whole. There is unity based on pleasure. Before long, everyone is pursuing their own pleasures and there is an undermining of authority
In the text it shows how oligarchy , autocracy and democracy address the basic needs of citizens. First democracy addresses the basic needs of citizens by protecting the people's natural rights. In a democracy citizens hold the political power. A example from the text is, since one natural right is liberty “ ...citizens elect leaders to represent their rights…”. Also, in an Oligarchy a small group of people has all the power. Oligarchy addresses the basic needs of citizens by having different views. For example, in an oligarchy “ Oligarchy is a Greek word that means “rule by few”. Finally in an autocracy one person rules. There can be either a dictatorship or a monarchy. Autocracy addresses the basic needs by making order.
In the modern world, most of the countries have democratic government, which means that decisions are made by the people, who rule and govern the state. However, there is not a single state that practices perfect democracy due to different reasons. Governments are too big, which makes it very complex for every citizen to have a voice in decisions. Or, governments are claimed to be democratic, but in practice they can be close to authoritarian or even totalitarian regimes where one person has a power to make and enforce laws. Political power is not allocated evenly among all members of society, so, in this or that way, governments tend to fall in the hands of the few, whom we can call the elite or the power elite.
Democracy is run by many different people, and a number of components have to happen for it to stay a democracy and not turn into a dictatorship. When leaders in democracy come to power they usually want four things for their reign. They are very important when it comes to staying liked by everyone. They are, keeping the elections free and fair so everyone could also be an active part in the government. When you have the elections free and fair then people will want to vote for the leader
