What does freedom look like? The definition of freedom varies. When I think of freedom three words come to my mind, which are liberty, independence, and equality. The subject of freedom is very important in the United States because it has been our nation is built on. We should all be thankful for our freedom and independence. Liberty is being able to do what one desires so long as it stays within the rules. This means that we get to choose whatever we want. We do not have to shop at certain stores or where certain clothes because we have to. We are free to express ourselves. You can be whoever you want to be and you hold the key to your own future. When you ask people what freedom is they may respond that freedom is when you can do whatever you want to do at whatever time. Mostly this will be the response of kids and young adults. But this definition of freedom is incorrect. Freedom is when we are allowed to have power of right to act without violating other people's freedoms or rights. The most effective tools for establishing and preserving freedom are strong government and constitution. All around the world people talk about freedom; America has more freedom than Russia, twenty-one years old as more freedom than a fifteen year old. What does “freedom” mean? Many have different definitions of “freedom”. For some it could be the freedom to speak and act as you want and others it could be to go where ever you want.
Freedom is something that everybody wants, it has been fought for by many countries for many years. When I think about freedom I think of all the things that we have the ability to do that other countries or other societies don’t have. Many people believe there are multiple ways to define freedom. The most obvious among them being that one can do whatever they want without fear of repercussion. According to Merriam Webster the definition of freedom is “the quality or state of being free”(1). The opposing viewpoint is that freedom is something that must come with restrictions if it is to stay in place. For example,some would say that it is there freedom to steal something if they so desire. Freedom with restrictions would suggest that it is not the persons freedom to steal because that interrupts the persons freedom that was the owner of the stolen object. In the words of the Declaration of Independence it would interfere with the freedom of the pursuit of happiness. But some would argue that one view is more valid than the other and vice versa.
Liberty is a strong and powerful word. To a man walking down the street it might mean something, but to a women at home it might mean something else. To me liberty means freedom for all. Freedom for all means if one gets a right then the person standing next to them gets the same right. Some kids do not understand, and this is fine, but when you get to the age where you can understand, you should know what liberty means.
Freedom, some people take it for grant it, some people strive for it. Our country fought hard for it. Freedom means to me to is the right to do what you want. But we will never get full freedom because if we had full freedom people would do what they want and if people did what they want we would have conflict. Physical freedom is most often sought by individuals seeking liberation from a controlling system such as prison or enslavement. This type of freedom is generally accepted as having the ability to move, eat, and live where you see fit without others permission. Physical freedom is the most simple and easiest type of freedom to grant; however, it is also often taken for granted especially in western societies. Being able to move from state to state or even country to country as seen in EU is a rarity in most of the world. Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wishes without hindrance or fear of being reprimanded. Since the age of the thirteen colonies, freedom has been the goal for all American citizens. We strive to make freedom a right, not just in our own country, but in other countries that seek assistance from the rest of the world.
