1. What is the definition of Ethos presented in the text? Give an example of ethos from this graphic novel and explain it.
Ethos was defined as, “the credibility that a speaker or writer brings to the subject that he or she is communicating about.” If a professor were to have a social media profile containing images of himself getting drunk with students, it would destroy his credibility as a teacher. In other words, his ethos as a teacher would be damaged because it would show he isn’t responsible and is a terrible example for students. (Understanding Rhetoric 44-45)
2. What is the definition of Pathos presented in the text? Give an example of pathos from this graphic novel and explain it.
Pathos was defined as, “the use of emotion
Numerous examples of Ethos can be identified throughout the writing. To begin with, Adam Grant is a writer for the
One way ethos is used in social media is all of the tweets about the new iphone. Most people are tweeting that the new iphone is acting up, and it’s too high in price. How do we know that they’ve even tried the new phone? Is this someone you can trust? The more people that tweet about the phone, the more likely you are to believe that the phone really is acting up. This makes the person tweeting about it, a credible and trustworthy source. Add a transition, to help the flow
According to How Writing Works the definition of the term “ethos” is, “the credibility of the writer.” Ethos can work in two ways, you can possess it, or you can earn it. Nansook Park earned her PhD in psychology and is a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, so her work it’s a given that she has experience in the field. From reading the whole excerpt it seems as though the target audience is the everyday American citizen. Park’s tone is more relaxed and sympathetic, which makes her and her arguments more relatable.
Ethos is a rhetorical appeal that Eighner establishes automatically and through the text as well. Eighner is a well known writer, his work has appeared in the Washington Post, The New York Times Review, and many others. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, his educated mind is displayed through his diction. He uses the word like corrupted, obscure, frankness, and niche. Obviously these are words your average “street rat” would not use. This deems Eighner credibility because he is an educated personnel. Eighner’s
According to Alan G. Gross and Arthur E. Walzer, ethos is a type of ethical appeal establishing the speaker’s credibility or character and expertise as persuasive techniques (…). Throughout, Evicted Matthew Desmond employs ethos to gain and reinforce his knowledge and expertise on the subject, to prove his reliability as a
ii. Topic Sentence – Pathos is referred to as the literature’s emotional appeal to the audience’s senses or imagination.
First, I would like to start by talking about Zadie Smith’s use of ethos in her essay “Generation Why.” The first example is in the first paragraph. Smith starts off by establishing credibility right away and presenting herself as trustworthy. She states, "'I was there' at Facebook's inception, and remember Facemash and the fuss it caused." This statement made Smith's readers trust her because she was
Ethos is an appeal to ethics, which gives the author credibility to persuade their attended audience. For instance, both Lukianoff and Haidt give a little insight about who they are, “Greg Lukianoff is a constitutional lawyer and the president and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which defends free speech and academic freedom on campus, and has advocated for students and faculty involved in many of the incidents this article describes; Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist who studies the American culture wars.” (Lukianoff and Haidt). Using this rhetorical strategy to start their argument off was a strong approach to persuading their attended audience because it provides credibility to the readers to prove to them that the authors know what they’re talking about and it makes the argument much more effective. Another example of ethos that the authors provide is, “Today, what we call the Socratic method is a way of teaching that fosters critical thinking, in part by encouraging students to question their own unexamined beliefs, as well as the received wisdom of those around them… But vindictive protectiveness teaches students to think in a very different way… A campus culture devoted to policing speech and punishing speakers is likely to engender patterns of thought that are surprisingly similar to those long identified by cognitive behavioral therapists as causes
To begin with, ethos is apparent in the excerpt “The Most Dangerous Job” by Eric Schlosser through his stories about workers and their families’ struggles. In the excerpt “The Most Dangerous Job,” Eric Schlosser states, “Each of their stories was different, yet somehow familiar, linked by common elements-the same struggle to receive proper medical care, the same fear of speaking out, the same underlying corporate indifference” (Schlosser 186). Schlosser shows the audience that he is a credible source through the stories of workers families. The families’ hardships showcase the corruption inside of
Pathos appeals to the reader’s emotions by using emotional stories and imagery. Pathos strategies are often used to grab and hold the reader’s attention. Emotional or personal stories give the reader an opportunity to emotionally relate to the story, and allows them to be emotionally connected. An emotionally connected reader is more interested in the story that a reader who is not emotionally connected.
The Old Spice commercial called “The man your man could smell like” is unique. When you first watch it, it almost looks like it is mocking men in a way. There are many different angles the audience can take on this advertisement campaign. Normally, a men’s advertisement would only focus on selling to men, but in this case Old Spice is targeting both men and women. They are doing this by drawing in both sexes by telling them what can be achieved if this product is used. If a woman’s man uses this, all their desires will come true, and if a man uses this, he will be able to please his woman in all different ways. Something else that stood out to me was that they portrayed their actor as a well-fit muscled man who is coincidentally handsome.
Firstly, the initial example of ethos comes from the very first paragraph in the article which states “Every day, claims are published on the Internet about low-calorie sweeteners and diet soda – one being that they make you gain weight. Despite what’s commonly reported, the
Ethos is when the author uses the reputation, credibility, experience, and values of the author or an expert as a means of persuasion. Moore himself is a renowned documentary maker and he ensures that his film is factually true. However, at times he manipulates facts and other people to suit his needs. For example, in the beginning of the film he is seen opening an account at a bank where customers that open an account receive a free gun. Moore himself
Finally, Mack, a wealthy white man with a great job, faces violence when his car breaks down in an unsafe neighborhood. Stranded at night in the middle of a dangerous area, a gang of black men attempt to carjack Mack. The gang threatened Mack’s life with a gun if he disobeyed what they ordered him to do. Before leaving, the man with the gun asks Simon, “Are you asking me a favor as a sign of respect or are you asking me a favor cause I got the gun?” This illustrates how in America, violence is used to gain what you want, no matter how it affects other people. Furthermore, the man carrying the gun was wearing a jacket with ‘USA’ written on the back. Referencing the fact that violence is present in America because the one with the gun is the
When the snake first came to the water-trough, the narrator was excited and glad "he had come like a guest in quiet, to drink at my water trough." He "felt so honoured" at this visit whilst at the same time, the voices of his "accursed human education" advised him to kill it, for it was a gold snake and therefore venomous.
