Deforestation
Trees are essential to life, there is no doubt about it. They provide us with oxygen, paper products, and they even absorb greenhouse gases. However, the world is losing trees at an alarming rate. Trees can not grow at a fast enough rate to replenish what has been cut down. This is called deforestation. Deforestation is when many trees in one area are cut down, mostly for logging and agricultural reasons.
Trees release oxygen, which means that they also absorb Carbon Dioxide. Without trees Carbon levels in the atmosphere would dramatically increase. “When trees are burned, harvested, or otherwise die, they release their carbon back into the atmosphere.”(Deforestation And Greenhouse-Gas Emissions). Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, greenhouse gases cause the ozone layer to burn up, they also cause global warming, or climate change.
Forests are habitats for many of earth’s creatures. Whenever the trees are cut down the animals that live there are forced to move to a new location. More often than not, that location is the suburbs or other urban areas. When these animals are displaced animal control has to either relocate them, or they have to put the animal down. This has caused many species of animals of become endangered or even extinct. One prime example is the Koala. “Koala populations are under serious threat from habitat loss and urban expansion” (Cameron). Koalas are considered an iconic animal in Australia, most members of the community want to help
