Thesis: The Cuban Revolution pre-1959 was caused by a many political, economic and social factors such as: Cuba’s separation from Spanish rule in 1898, the American interest and influence on Cuba and, the social unrest that Batista’s policies and relationship with the Mob caused, which ultimately led to Castro’s fight and overall succession in 1959.
Cuba, after it was already inhabited by native tribes, was first “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1492 (Brenner et al. 2). From then on, Cuba became a colony of Spain. This demonstrated how much power the US had in Cuban politics, that it could easily play with Cuba’s leadership. Cuban citizens started to become angry. One of these people were Fulgencio Batista, who led a Coup and successfully overthrew the existing government, becoming the new de-facto dictator (Brenner et al. 6). Although his first term in office was progressive as he supported labor unions and established economic reforms, his second presidency was quite the opposite (7).
Batista was known to be a puppet president. When he came back and decided to be president again in 1952, he overthrew the government again with a bloodless coup. However, this time, his government was not the same. Rather than advocating for the people, Batista, this time, collaborated with American mobsters, such as Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, who had plans to create businesses in Cuba to earn money for themselves (English 16-17). Batista began to reap enormous profits from these business interests. He aligned himself with the Mob who controlled drugs, gambling and prostitution rings in the U.S. Nonetheless, it was a two way street. With Batista under it 's belt, the Mob was able to use Cuba to create flourishing businesses to attract American tourists such as casinos, hotels and night clubs filled with prostitutes (16). Lansky and Luciano’s operations kept other mafia bosses happy with its large profits along with making Batista wealthy. Although
