The critical appraisal process is implemented to examine the reliability and validity of a research study by evaluating relevance in practice and how to improve the quality of medical care. The focus of this assignment is to critically appraise the article The lived experience of parents and guardians providing care for child transplant recipients by focusing on the study methods, design, sample, data collection, and findings to measure significance of execution in the clinical setting. According to Williams, Eilers, Heermann, & Smith (2012), with a statistical increase in children living “normally” post transplant, there lies a demand to understand the reality of patient’s and family’s experiences and potential stressors presented throughout this financially, physically, and emotionally taxing process.
Synopsis
The main emphasis of the qualitative research study titled The lived experience of parents and guardians providing care for child transplant recipients is to highlight the trials and tribulations parents and guardians are faced with when caring for a child post transplant (Williams et all, 2012). The study is aimed to direct healthcare members to understand the importance of increasing communication and in hospital education prior to discharge in order to decrease stress and improve long-term survival. Laurel Williams, June Eilers, Judith Heerman, and Karen Smith (2012) out of the University of Nebraska Medical Center developed a study after determining there was a
Once an area of evidence-based practice has been chosen for investigation, the reviewer must locate current evidence sources and, using a structured approach, assess each for applicability to the issue being investigated. The aim of this paper is to use a Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2011) to support these sources of evidence into a review that discusses the importance of daily, high-level, multidisciplinary communication and patient safety. The summaries of these evaluations will be provided as an appraisal of each study.
The purpose of this report is to conduct a critical appraisal of a published article.
An important aspect involved in critical appraisal of a study involves identifying and evaluating the study framework. This allows the reader to determine whether it is appropriate to apply the study findings to nursing practice. The author of this study identified the specific perspective from which the study was developed. More specifically, the author sought to provide insight into the phenomenon of lay presence during adult CPR specifically from the perspective of ambulance staff and
This charity programs have traditionally been built on three parts; reducing the financial barriers to treatment, support systems to soften the family stress that’s linked with transplantation or cancer treatment, and developed with the opening of the Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric Transplant Center. Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric is an exceptional facility providing treatment for children needing transplants to survive their disease. Kids Beating Cancer removes barriers to treatment for children with cancer, leukemia, and sickle cell. Parents seek their services in need of a marrow or stem cell transplant providing support for the families as they facing a challenging situation towards a cure. They also provides the pre-transplant testing
Also, parents were studied as a whole as opposed to considering the possible differences in maternal and paternal experiences. A grounded theory approach would have been beneficial to comprehend the course of parental experience in the NICU. In implementing findings, nurses must recognize the importance of using stress-reducing methods with parents. Getting to know each family on a personal level allows nurses to modify care to each specific situation, and most importantly, build trust. Trust will open the line of communication. Further research will provide a better grasp on the parental experience after supportive and developmental care has been used (Obeidat et al.,
During an Evidence Based Practice research project, a crucial step is, to perform a Rapid Critical Appraisal Evaluation(RCAE). Followed by the development of a clinical search question, in addition to available and appropriate searchable data, from two(2) different databases; the National Guideline Clearance House and PubMed Clinical Queries. Accordingly, to achieve this significant step, keywords such as Patient, health care providers, infection control, lack of hand washing, infection prevention, nursing, nurses, post-operative complications, disease prevention, staff training/competency training, post-anesthesia, equipment cleaning among others were used. meanwhile, to limit our research to more specific information terms like surgery,
I am in agreement with your process of critical appraisals; identifying the steps in the research process, determining the strengths and weaknesses in the studies and evaluating the validity and credibility of the studies seem to be the root elements of critical appraisals. I appreciated the scholarly article you chose linking depression and mortality among diabetes mellitus patients, particularly because of the straightforwardness of the article. it seemed the conclusion and points of the article were straight forward and the article was easy to understand. If I could suggest any addition, it would be a way to verify the credibility of the study. maybe in this study in particular there is not much incentive for lack of credibility, but in
Hypertension (HTN) is a chronic disease that can affect young and old worldwide. As the population ages understanding and ability to follow the prescribed plan of care can decline. To prevent chronic diseases related to uncontrolled HTN, nurses provide education regarding the prescribed plan of care. Nurses assure that patients can understand and follow through with this plan of care. At first glance it appears that Machado et al. provide information that may help guide today’s nurse in providing education appropriate to the elderly patient with hypertension. Due in part to problems with understanding related to language and cultural barriers, Machado et al. fall short in their presentation.
There is an increasingly large need for the care provided by certified child life specialists as the healthcare field continues to move toward more well rounded, family-centered care. The stressors and trauma caused by the hospitalization of a family member can leave life-long negative impacts. While the child life field is expanding quickly, little attention has been paid to the psychosocial, emotional, and developmental needs of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients and families. Parents and siblings of infants in NICUs face communication gaps from doctors and nurses, and stress and anxiety when struggling to understand not-so-easily comprehensible medical jargon. Additional negative impacts take effect when attempting to cope with
In addition, Kilkelly U & Donnelly M. had highlighted the result of children being interviewed during the research and the importance of their involvement with their healthcare provider’s children, their responses suited the age groups, and the clarifications assisted them to manage their individual conditions. The results revealed that children to be recognized, to be handled with empathy, compassion, and with pleasing manner during their sickness. In this research, the children made important proposals for effective communication. (Kilkelly, U., & Donnelly, M. 2006).
Grounded theory approach is used by many nurse researchers to influence changes in the clinical practice. I found a study done by Aburn & Gott (2014) on parents perspective about education given to parents of children diagnosed
When children are diagnosed with chronic health issues, we need to consider the world surrounding the child and move into family centered nursing care as families are a constant in the child’s life. Immediately nurses must consider supportive measures including, but not limited to, teaching, coping mechanisms and emergency treatment plans for all caregivers in the child’s life.
For the purpose of this assignment, I will reflect on two things that are unique about this type of family that I learned from the textbook, as well as how this will be helpful as a human services professional. I will also reflect on how I relate to this family stressor. While reading chapter five of Families and Change, Illness and Family Stress, I found it unique that parents with a child who are chronically ill face more psychological stressors that are more demanding and pervasive than a parent without an ill child. These stressors include constantly having to deal with insurance companies and employer conflicts, being isolated from social networks, making difficult medical decisions, communicating with their ill child about their illness,
In my clinical experience at Seattle Children’s Hospital on the cardiac surgical unit I have been a part of providing nursing care that is dedicated to patient safety and centered around developing and growing my nursing practice. Two of the provisions that I best exemplified in clinical are provision 4 and provision 3. The unit that I am on has a continuity of care with the patients that we take care of because we end up having multiple readmissions for our patient population. The majority of our patient population is made up of pre transplants, post transplants, and transplant organ rejections or complications so the nurse on the unit build long terms relationships with our patients and their families.
The boss’s evaluation is not good and fair for Sandy. And it is not helpful for Sandy to improve.
