For ages the Jewish population did not have a place to call home. They had been wandering around deserts, were once slaves in Egypt, but didn’t have any land to their name. Following the Holocaust, after many Jews had been persecuted by Hitler and the Nazis, a good portion of the overall amount of Jews in the world let alone Europe had been exterminated. As a result, Harry Truman and the UN suggested Israel, a homeland for the Jews. Tensions had been growing throughout the beginning of the 20th Century regarding the Palestinian area in the Middle East. This area was off to the side of Asia, near Africa. When the Jews and Arabs were offered part of this land, war broke out and still continues today. Even though a war happened as a result …show more content…
The whole crowd was excited and very proud. A song called “Hatikvah” was sung by many. The official creation of the state of Israel was declared by David Ben-Gurion. David Ben-Gurion was the prime minister at the time.War had broken out, and on May 13, danger struck Israel. An air attack was ordered on Tel Aviv. Many surrounding groups attacked Israel. These groups destroyed Jewish cities and defense forces. All of these events happened very close after independence was declared. The attack was most likely planned to provoke Israel right after they were excited to get their own homeland. It was a brutal attack to intimidate and show them how they did not approve of their presence. That year, in 1948, the “Arab-Israeli War” started. The Palestinian area was invaded by five other Arab countries practically immediately after Israel was announced. Some other countries included Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt. Around 30 million people attack Israel (The New York Times Upfront). An extraordinary amount of Palestinian Arabs were deported to other places. This was due to the war going on. Part of the motive for this war was that Jerusalem, an very religious area located in Israel, would be managed by the UN. Some Palestinian Arabs were angry and therefore war broke out. Fortunately, most of the fighting stopped in 1949. The bordering nations accepted armistice lines. The armistice lines lasted until 1967. Though some of
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the one of the world’s oldest conflicts, and it is still an ongoing problem in the world. Zionists and Arabs: two groups with conflicting beliefs who both claim Israel as their own. In wake of the Holocaust the U.N decided to gift the Jews a homeland for the lives lost in the genocide. In 1947, the U.N Partition divided the land of Israel (Historic Palestine) into two separate states: Arab and Jewish. Since then, the state of Israel has been the center of conflict between the Arabs and the Zionists. As time passed the Zionists gained more land from winning the Six-Day War, and consequently the Palestinians had to live as refugees in other Arab countries. Additionally, more than 75% of the land belonged to
In 1948, Israel, originally known as Palestine was created. The Jews believed Israel was their ‘holy’ birthplace, this was called religious connection. In the book of Genenis, a verse states “I will bless those who bless you and cures him that cures you” (document A). When the “westerners” saw this verse they felt the need to get the Jews to get their holy land. This is called Zionism. Another reason is the Holocaust, which was the massacre of 6 million Jews. Anti-Semitism was also another reason, which was discrimination of Jews.
David Ben-Gurion (the head of the world Zionist Organization) made Israel a nation-state, in may of 1948. The jews had a goal to create a homeland in the Palestine area for many years, this goal grew after WW2. The violence towards the Jewish in WW2, the united nations decided what the jews had control of. They decided that Palestine was going to be split into sections, one for the jews, one for the Arabs, and another for the jerusalem and bethlehem. A vote was taken, and soon everyone signed it. The Arab-Israeli war of 1948 was resulted in Israel's independence. The war was between the Arabs and israel. There was tension between the jews and the muslim Arab for control of “their” land. The dividing of Palestine caused the tension to end and civil war erupted. This caused many palestine Arabs to flee and become refugees and 700 000 jews flee to Israel, because they were expelled from their country. Israel's independence caused tension to form and created more problems for the
Ever since Zionists (an extremist part of the Jewish population) immigrated to Palestine In the late 1800s, violence has plagued the region. The sheer numbers of Zionists moving in to Palestine scared the Arab population already living there, and fighting began. In an attempt to stop the violence spreading through Palestine, the United Nations stepped in and divided the nation into two separate states, one for the Jewish residents, and one for the Arab population. The dividing of the nations made the Arab people feel cheated, due to a larger amount of land being given to the Jewish people, even though there were less of them. Britain, which had been in control of the nation, quickly withdrew after the separation.
The Jews took to Palestine to establish their homeland and the situation worsened until the Palestinian revolution against the Zionist movement and continued British and American support for the Jews until the United Nations decided to divide Palestine into a Jewish state and another Arab. The State of Israel was declared on the land of Palestine with American and British support. The Arabs rejected this decision, while the Jews who declared their state accepted it until a war broke out that the Arabs lost. This encouraged the Jews to expand and occupy more Palestinian land. Where the Zionist government stripped the Arabs of Palestine from their land.
The crisis in Jerusalem dragged both Israel and Palestine into a vortex of violence and a religious conflict. Both Israelis and Palestinians had claim the city as a sacred religious site and their political capital. The conflict became quite violent causing the closure of holy sites, a deadly terrorist attack caused the Palestinian's to end all contact with Israel. Despite the peace efforts between the states, societies continued to rupture along ethnic and religious lines. Israel's continued unfolding with religious conflict and persisted in illegal actions causing living conditions for Palestinian civilians to become unlivable. Jews have formed the largest religious group in the city and have been in the majority. However, the Arab and Jewish communities in Palestine were in mortal dispute. Under an agreement approved by the United Nations, Jerusalem was meant to become a separated body but due to Arab forces sieging Jerusalem, and withdrawing of the British mandate, Jerusalem became a huge battleground. Jewish settlers pushed Muslim Arabs out of their homes and established the state of Israel on their land during the middle of the 20th century. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are extremely tied to the ancient city due to them recognizing Jerusalem as a holy place. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is over which gets what land and how that land is
Since the UN partition of Israel and Palestine in 1947, Israel has been placed in many instances of conflict between the Jewish migrants to the region and the Palestinian natives. Several conflicts resulted in open, declared war, such as the First Arab-Israeli War of 1948-1949, and the Yom Kippur War of 1973. In addition, Israel has been involved in the occupation of the West Bank and the blockade of the Gaza Strip. After the last open war, Israel’s occupation of the West Bank has been marked by the military governorate, taking political and institutional control of the region that is ethnically and religiously different than the population that resides in the Jewish state of Israel.
In 1099 the crusades spread to that area and seized control of that land and created the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, which the Jewish people base their claims to owning the land. Then in 1187 Egypt defeats those in control of the region and begins to reinstate Islamic control of the province (www.palestinecenter.org). Then in 1517 the Ottoman Empire expanded throughout the entire Middle East. Until 1917 the Ottoman Empire controlled the area, but since Turkey supported German during the First World War the lands were divided among Europe. Palestine, Jordan and Israel fell unto British control and they saw the idea of a Jewish homeland ideal. Because there had not been an established homeland for a group in the area since the Jewish people had almost two thousand years prior. It was not until the 1880’s when the first Jewish immigrations took place in an effort of preparation to eradicate the spread of malaria and make the swamplands once again inhabitable for the rebirth of Israel. Following their success in the clean up process there were more opportunities for employment and a safer place to live it enticed the immigration of Arabs. During the time that the Jewish settlers revitalization of the area there was no conflict between them and the Arabs already present (www.masada2000.org). In 1923 the British government allowed for
Before anyone can comprehend the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one must understand the theory of Zionism. Theodor Herzl was the first Jew to have the idea of creating Israel. He was a witness of the Dreyfus affair, in which a Jewish officer was accused of treason, solely because he was Jewish. Herzl also witnessed mobs of people shouting “Death to the Jews”. This was the last straw for Herzl. Herzl decided that there needed to be a change so he made it one of his life goals to create a successful movement in which Jews founded a Jewish state. One of his main arguments was that discrimination against Jews could be eliminated if they had their own Jewish State, and so modern Zionism was formed. The idea of modern Zionism is so pertinent to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because much of the reason for Israel becoming a Jewish state is behind the fact that Jews were perpetrated throughout the years before Zionism even came into play of the situation.
During World War II, millions of Jews fled from Germany to escape the brutality of Adolf Hitler. A Zionist movement established that all Jewish refugees were to flee to Palestine, a concept founded by The Jewish State, by Dr. Theodore Herzl, in order to unite all Jews in one holy state. The British were convinced in 1917 by Chaim Weizmann that all Jews needed their own territory in Palestine, and in the early 1920s, the British were given a mandate over Palestine by the League of Nations. Palestinians felt threatened by the rise in Jewish presence in their state, causing widespread fighting in order to expel Jews from the Arabians’ sacred Palestinian land. Ben-Gurion (also known as a member to the World Zionist Congress) was leader of the Jewish peoples in 1947, whereas there was no single leader of the Arabs, there were several influential figures to the cause: Haj Amin el-Husseini – grand mufti of Jerusalem, Azzam Pasha – secretary-general of the Arab League, King Abdullah of Transjordan – only leader open to a Arab-Jewish compromise, and Glubb Pasha – commander of the British-trained Arab Legion.
In the end of the 19th century, Zionist schemes surfaced and the Palestinian plight began. At the time, in 1878, Palestine population was around 460,000 and the Jews were just around 3%. Nevertheless, with the rise of the European nationalism, more Jews suffered persecution, so they started to organize and think of emigrating from Europe, but they didn’t know where to go. That is what the Jewish journalist Theodor Hertzel answered in his book where he called for a national homeland for the Jews. Hertzel suggested Palestine, Argentine and other places in Africa as well. However, many Jewish conferences took place to collect funding and support for this cause. As a result, Palestine was the chosen to be that place. Then the immigration of the Jews to Palestine began.
Throughout the period of World War II, many Jewish people had fled to Israel seeking a place for sanctuary due to Hitler’s reign of terror, but who knew that one of the most largest movements in the history of Europe would cause one of the biggest renowned issues that still remains today. We can easily conclude that both Palestinian and Israeli people both believe that Israel is a land of sacred, where both religions had made history in this land. Although one of the biggest issues that still remains today is who really deserves the land the most. The Palestinian people currently live in the land of Israel before the Jews had made their movement, but after letting in countless Jewish refugees into their land, the Jewish people had realized
Both the Jews and the Arabs have claims to the land because of the claim of the ancient territorial rights over areas in the Middle East. The area knows as Palestine has seen many waves of invasions from the Romans and the Egyptians. After WW1 Britain and France re-drew the borders to suit their needs. The British and French have made the situation between the Arabs and the Jews worse by making too many promises without a full understanding of both of the viewpoints.
The Jews went through a lot of difficulties to get to where they are today. They lost their land and had to fight and go through what is called Zionism. Zionism was a movement created by Theodor Herzl and Chaim Weizmann that was set to help get a homeland for the Jews of the world. If the Jews originally had a country of their own they wouldn't of needed to go through everything they did so they could live a better life. The Jews originally had a homeland in Israel but when they lost wars and had to leave, they had no place to call home. So every country they resident in was only a temporary place for them to live. It didn't feel right for them not to live on their land called Israel. If the Jews kept control of their homeland, events such
The nation of Israel was originally a nation of nomadic people who were isolated and oppressed. After the horrific events of the Holocaust some Jewish people made homes in Israel. The people who made their homes came to be known as Israelites. They were given this name because the nation was named after Israel who was originally known as Jacob (Fisher, 2005). The nation of Israel has always been in a state of disorder and confusion, and in 1947 the United Nations gave Israel to the Jewish people who declared it an independent state in 1948. Israel’s Arabic neighbors did not support this decision and war followed. Battles are still being fought today. Tension also exists within the Jewish community in Israel. There have been many Jewish people who have settled in Israel. These settlers have diverse backgrounds. Some are orthodox and some are not which can bring tension. Even
