Throughout History, there have been many different groups or events that are still widely known today. Groups of people such as the Indians or Vikings are popular groups which are referenced constantly in today’s society. However, none of these groups is more known or referenced than the Japanese Samurai. Originating in 646 AD, these Japanese warriors developed from a loose organization of farmers to the dominant social class in Feudal Japan. Along with their dominant military and political standing, the samurai brought with them a unique code or moral belief that became the core of Samurai culture. Because of this, the Samurai and their principles still affect modern day Japanese society with social customs today

The social structure of Japan was composed with 7 parts, which includes the shogun, samurai, farmers, artisans, merchants, outcasts and non-humans. Next to the shogun, the samurai is looked at with the most prestigious position in their society. As a samurai, they are taught to act and behave in a certain way. This is called the code of Bushido, which states that “the true warrior must hold loyalty, courage, veracity, compassion, and honor as important, above all else. An appreciation and respect of life was also imperative, as it added balance to the warrior character of the Samurai.”

For 700 years, Japan was ruled mainly by a succession of shoguns, whose titles were usually passed through hereditary. The shogun's family would however sometime become weak, and thus an opposing leader would seize power from them, after which he would be named shogun and would start a new ruling family.

Hearing the war cries and the galloping of horses, the enemy prepared themselves for the wrath of Japanese samurai. They were strong and fearless warriors, but you did not want to be their enemy. Samurai were important in feudal Japan because they provided protection to Japan, they had many military equipment to help them out in battle, and finally they were well-disciplined.
