Corruption in sport is not a new occurrence. However there has been an increasing series of high-profile corruption cases arising all over the world and in many different sports. This has seen an increased vulnerability to the integrity and values of sport. Illegal activities such as match-fixing, use of inside information for betting purposes and improper use of commercialisation of sports betting are many examples that lead to corruption of sport. Many of these legal and illegal activities are affecting the integrity and values on and off the field. The continuing growth in sports also brings along a growth in the industry of sports betting with heavy commercialisation being a detrimental factor to sports image. This is due to extensive promotion of sports betting during live and televised sport as well as through new media types such as the internet, mobile devices and social media. This increase in promotion of sports betting brings up concern about the potential negative impacts especially for adolescents, young men and problem gamblers. A driving issue in sports betting is the internet as today is possible to bet online on any sports anywhere in the world at any time.
This growth in sports betting has also resulted in a surge in the commercialisation of sports betting services. Saturation marketing of sports betting has resulted in growing concern with regard of vulnerable groups. The rise of online betting on sport has seen a significant increase in levels of concern. The relationship between gambling exposure and participation can present many implications for sport as a whole.
