There has been a lot of controversy over the Uber and Taxi debate. There have been state and country headlines on how Uber is taking away Taxi drives’ customers; that Uber is not as safe and reliant as Taxi drivers. In some instances, there are areas that have banned Uber altogether. This technology company claims that they are only putting individuals in touch with a business, like the yellow pages, and should not be held to the same liabilities and standards as the Taxi cab drivers. There are many things that make them similar and there are many things that differentiate them.
Both Uber and Taxi cab drivers are independent contractors. However, it was not always like that for Taxi drivers. Taxi cab drivers had been unionized from 1904 to

Unfortunately unlike Uber, cab drivers have to rent their cab from the company. Majority of the time it is not an easy transition for the Taxi driver to get from the yard to the street. It is difficult for Taxi drivers to get a cab because most drives must rent a taxi from a cab company and the company’s dispatchers exploited that fact by manipulating them into paying higher cash tips to the dispatchers before allowing them to work. If an individual did not pay $10 to $20 dollars, regardless of the scheduled shift, they would not get a good car or they would not get out their scheduled time and be sitting at the yard for 3 hours. If individuals decided to pay then less, they would be given a broken down cab that might not last them through the entire shift. This in turn is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of the Taxi drivers switched to driving Uber because they do not have to deal with the company practice.
Uber and Taxi cabs also share a lot of simple difference when it comes to the basic of the car. Taxi must charge the same rate all the time. Uber can surge on holidays or special events. Cabs care inspected by the city. Uber does not have inspections. Cabs get an FBI background check. Uber does its own background check. In addition Uber’s terms and conditions states that transportation can be potentially dangerous or unsafe and that you use the service at your own risk because there is no insurance covering the customer if there is an accident and because Uber cannot protect the safety of the
In Singapore, the taxi industry was highly regulated and organized. Drivers are required to hold a valid Taxi Driver's Vocational License which could be obtained after completing their training course at the Singapore Taxi Academy and passing a theory test. Comparatively, Taiwan drivers only need to pass a basic driving test to become a cabbie. This difference in credentials shows the control and regulatory differences between the two cultures in the taxi industry. As a result of the rules and regulations in Singapore and the lack of rules and regulations in Taiwan, the regions gain two completely different types of taxi drivers. The Singapore taxi industry acquires employees that are professional and dedicated to their job because they see it as a career. The drivers there plan on staying in the profession for an extended period of time. In Taiwan the lack of rules and regulation in obtaining professional licenses
Uber as a business have conducted and implemented many harmful tactics and policies. The primary issue that Uber has been deemed harmful are Uber taking and requiring all drivers to accept the percentage cuts. In addition, the higher percentage cuts will be deduct from each earned revenue the driver obtain while driver for Uber. This is a very harmful tactics
Knowing these two facts, most of the passengers that have entered my vehicle have stated that either Uber or Lyft tend to have more of a sense of urgency than a Cab service, such as showing up quickly. Which lends to why less people are utilizing their services and more using either Lyft or Uber. However, not all have a concept of this urgency when it comes to meeting their Uber/Lyft driver. I find that some tend to go beyond the 5 minute timer and lollygag around before they venture out of their houses or apartments to get in the car.
Safety isn't guaranteed anywhere, in a taxi, on the street corner, or in a crowded restaurant. This is a dangerous world, as we all know. I've heard the scary stories of physical and sexual assaults and as devastating for the victims as I'm sure it was, let us keep in mind the tendency the media has to sensationalize. A grain of salt is always needed.
Uber. To many, it is the preferred mode of transportation for a sporting event or concert when traffic is mayhem. To others, it’s a convenient and fast way to step up in da club and get your jiggy on. I have used Uber a couple of time in the states and for the most part, the rides were smooth, comfortable, and direct. As I was embarking on my study abroad journey in Puebla, Mexico, my group was advised to use Uber as it is securer than taxis in Mexico. The first week using Uber was lit. Short time waits and swift pick-ups, no confusion with locations, drivers with good music taste and complimentary water and candy. Drivers would even open the car doors for us, classy af [or you can put “such high class
My experience as a cab driver has been very bad over the past 10 years. I have had some very
In a study conducted by Business Insider, Uber is a cheaper in the top 20 cities except for New York, where it ties (Silverstein). However, this is after including a customary 20% tip for taxi drivers, which is uncommon among Uber. Additionally, the study was conducted using a 5 mile, 10 minute trip that drives 30 mph the whole way, which shows that this covers only a small part of what most trips are like. Moreover, pricing changes with each different type of ride because of different mileage and time not moving, so the results of this narrow spectrum study is deemed
However, recently there have been several issues that have jeopardised the image of taxi aggregators like Ola and Uber. There have been incidence of Molestation, rash driving and rape that has shaken the faith of frequent passengers of the aggregators.
With new Presidential leadership, Uber has faced major political challenges with the restrictions and emphasis on illegal immigration. Furthermore, the restrictions on illegal immigrants have affected the support drivers of Uber as many of the drivers were illegal immigrants (Anand, 2017). Consequently, when the current president imposed the travel band many Uber drivers that were outside the United States were unable to re-enter the country (Anand, 2017). As previously noted, Uber has faced many political challenges regarding its failure to require the Uber drivers to have background checks. Furthermore, there has been allegations of untrustworthiness of its drivers, which many have faced some type of criminal charges (Anand, 2017).
Uber will pay for everything, I can even rent another car if I want and the company will reimburse without any problem. I went to the Uber office and provided all the proof and papers received from the inspector. Now I have my car and keep driving again for this company. This is what I am actually doing so that I can easily manage my study with the UOP.
This industry has already started expanding their business more than just ride sharing application they have gone into electric driving. One of the CEOs Travis Kalanick of this business said it will be intense, but it is only for expanding the company on making more profit (Felton). In Ryan Felton article he stresses Uber overall problem is will their money last enough to have a trucking and a driverless car. I believe that if Uber budgets their money right and avoid lawsuits they can expand one part of the company at a time.
It is undeniable that Uber and Grab has given a big impact towards taxi industries. The convenience uses of modern technology have given Uber and Grab a big advantage and it also has flexible payment and cheaper fare rather than a taxi. Uber is known to be a sharing economy platform which is a system in which people rent, borrow, or share commodities, services, and resources owned by individuals, usually with the aid of online technology, in an effort to save money, cut costs, and reduce waste. Adi Gaskell (2017) stated that the effect of Uber towards taxi industries are complex, Uber has created more jobs than it has destroyed while some taxi company may have seen a loss in income. What is more is that Uber has given a wide opportunity for people to have a job and it is very convenience rather than being a taxi driver as there are many rules and regulations that need to be obeyed.
However, they would have safety concerns with the service provided by Uber. Presenting the experience bias and confirmation bias, there is numerous news of how Uber drivers are
I frequently use Uber and have discussed their ride sharing services in several other courses. I did find it surprising that the company or even car manufacturers are looking into the idea of driverless cars and rides. I still do not trust the entire concept of driverless vehicles and I believe Uber should work on other aspects of the service before even having discussions on this topic. I would mainly want to work with Uber to improve in app offerings for safety purposes. I have already seen Uber in the news due to the criminal actions of some of their drivers. Like most people on the board have stated, Uber definitely needs to do further investigations when it comes to background checks of their drivers. I believe Uber should integrate a
We live in a technology driven world, almost everyone own a smartphone today. Uber and its competitors are allowing us to use an app on our smartphone to call for a cab. When a rider request a ride, the app gives you an estimated time of when the driver will arrive. It also calculates the fare and take the money out of your account. Whoever came up with the Uber idea is genius. Uber is beneficial to both the riders and the drivers. Uber created jobs for a lot of individuals, also for people who has a job but want to make extra money can drive Uber. The riders get high quality service for a fair price. In addition, the Uber app is easy to use and to understand. Increasing the amount of cars on the road results in faster pickup time which is
