3. Machismo is the belief that some men have about men being superior than women. This was very common between the 60's and 70's in Mexico, and for
Mexicans living in certain parts of the United States. In the novel called "Simply
Maria" a girl named Maria experiences the hardships of machismo and the abuse that comes with it. "Simply Maria" is a novel that was written by Josefina Lopez a
Mexican writer. She in this novel has implied various themes one of the major ones is machismo. It talks about a girl named Maria and how as she is growing up is limited to do things and suffers because of machismo. Maria, the protagonist, is a girl who wanted to be educated , willing to struggle to do something in life. Maria’s father showed that he was superior to women. This causes the men to over-react and abuse women in a variety of ways causing the abused women to get hurt, sometimes physically, other times mentally and others emotionally, their feelings get shattered and their minds corrupted. To begin with machismo is shown throughout the whole story. The physical abuse is

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” This quote by Helen Keller claims that in order to thrive, one needs hope and confidence. Esperanza happens to have both-- at least she eventually comes to have both. In her series of vignettes, “The House on Mango Street,” Sandra Cisneros writes of several of Esperanza’s experiences to show her evolution as a child into a woman. Esperanza starts as an insecure child, before beginning to gain confidence, and finally gaining that confidence. This evolution of Esperanza’s can be seen in the vignettes, “A Rice Sandwich,” “Papa Who Wakes Up Tired In The Dark,” and “Beautiful and Cruel” respectively. These experiences and vignettes that Cisnero covers
When he was on his way to finding his family and trying to escape the rebels they got into the government army. They were like the rebel soldiers too so it wasn't any better for him and his friends. When he was a soldier they gave them drugs, made them watch war movies and brainwashed them. He became a very violent person in this part of his life and he thought what he was doing was okay, and it wasn’t.He was surround with bad things and got used to the fact that it was made okay and everyone around him were doing the same thing so he didn’t think it was out of the ordinary and he got used to being violent and ruthless and got
When a man is a product of his environment and the environment is filled with violence and hatred, the possibilities are horrifying. Richard kuklinski is a prime example of just that. His childhood was something no human, let alone a child should go through. His anger built up and his life eventually was overcome by it. He then progressed to a cold-blooded killer, starting small, and then ending with the mob until his capture.

An example of his sudden outbursts is when he says,” i was only 13 and they were going to have me psychoanalized and all, because i broke all the windows in the garage.”. To be fair, his brother Allie passedn away before he did this, but violence is not a very good oping mechanism. He alslo uses social seclusion as a coping mechanism, which is a common symptom of almost every mental disorder. An example of his social seclusion is the night of the pencey prep school game. He didnt go be cause he didnt like to, he didnt want to. He caqn be teated with cognitive behavior therapy, which will most likely improve his future mental
The psychic of the young person is shaped by social interactions as well as the parental training. Often the young murderers were brought in pathological environments, they did not experience the parental love and acceptance, and they forced themselves to drown particular emotions so as not to appear weak. All these factors results in social dysfunctions that triggers violence and violence becomes the perfect self-defense mechanism, because it brings attention. According to the FBI’s list of traits that describe young murderers the most common syndromes are the feeling of isolation, the narcissist disorder, and depression6. A perfect example to support the above argument will be a background check of Jeff Weise, a young sixteen-year-old boy who killed 9 people and committed suicide in the Red Lake Senior High School in Minnesota in 2005. Weise’s family was the kind of pathological one, his parents were separated, his mother had a habit of drinking too much being an abusive alcoholic, what is more Weise himself was often bullied at school7.
Maria is fifteen years old. Her mother reports that Maria has been performing poorly in school and has withdrawn from her family. This began after her transition to secondary school. Her performance further deteriorated when she began second year. Maria stopped participating in a number of her occupations including hockey, playing the piano, the girl guides, shopping with friends and going to the cinema. She now prefers to stay on the computer of listening to music.
The narrator states that “it was [Maria] who did away with my generation’s virginity” (65). Garcia Marquez uses a hyperbole to portray how crucial Maria Cervantes’s contradictory role is in the men’s lives. She embraces her sexuality and is very open. In addition she also “taught [the men] much more than [they] should have learned, but she taught us above all that there’s no place in life sadder than an empty bed” (65). She reinforces the idea that sexuality should not be repressed because that would only bring on loneliness and despair. She recognizes the “disorder of love” that the townspeople live with because of repressed sexuality. The narrator describes Santiago Nasar’s passionate relationship with Maria Cervantes. He describes their relationship like “a falcon who chases a warlike crane” and that the falcon can only “hope for a life of pain” (65). The author uses a metaphor to compare Maria to a warlike crane in order to show her power and grace. The crane is a bird that stands tall and may look elegant and enticing but because Maria is “a warlike crane” she is able to stand up and fight for herself while still maintaining her grace. Another aspect of her independence would be that she stands alone in her battle against society. Garcia Marquez gives her these headstrong qualities to show how she follows her own path and goes against the town’s beliefs without showing any signs of stopping and to show that
“Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.” Domestic violence happens everywhere and anywhere across the world. 691, 710 nonfatal violent crimes caused by and intimate partner in 2001 (Domestic Violence: Opposing Viewpoints 18). It affects all of us in the worst way. There could be someone you know going through this and you wouldn’t even know about it. That’s why people need to be more educated about domestic violence. To know the signs and the red flags and help everyone around them, because sometimes you don’t notice people in difficult situations. Which leads to tragic outcomes. The victims get their life destroyed by someone they know. Losing hope for the future. Therefore,
Violence is the intentional use of force or aggression against another person. Violence is another component of masculinity and the requirements to be a man. This is shown through the physical aggression males have when they get mad, or angry. Society is constantly telling boys to fight back. If a boy is getting bullied, they are supposed to fight the bully back. If a man gets in a fight at the bar, they are supposed to fight back. This aggression is also engrained in males from a young age. Violence can also be an example of a characteristic for a boy suffering from depression. Depression can typically lead to aggressive behaviours and cause a boy to misbehave. With violence being an aspect of masculinity, it can cause issues when trying to diagnose suffering teens with depression. By making violence a common attribute among boys, it decreases the likelihood of adults noticing those in need of mental health assistance.
Domestic violence is an act of assault that happens every day, fixing an issue like domestic violence is hard but not impossible. By speaking out and helping those who have been abused is the hardest but most effective way of limiting domestic violence. Lots of people blame domestic violence related issues on substance abuse or a controlling man. Those statements may be true but it’s an over exaggeration. Abuse causes severe physiological effects as well as emotional. Domestic violence can be almost anything and can happen to anyone at any time.
