Study by definition is the application of mind to the knowledge that one have, as by reading, observation, writing or talking. Many people have acknowledged the benefits of studies in lives and that is one of the reason why the education system exist. Studies have lots of advantages, but if people both study and apply it to their lives, the knowledge that they have would last longer and give more benefits to them. In “Of Studies,” Francis Bacon points out about the importance of studies and how it is useful in practical application. In “The Colonel,” Michael Hogan describes his experiences in learning tennis from an army colonel who also taught him life’s lessons. Ornament in general is a decoration that people usually put on something to make it more attractive, so in terms of study, it would give additional merits for people who study and make them appear stunningly than others. Bacon states in his essay that “the chief use for ornament, is in discourse” (42). This statement expresses that studies act like decorations for people in their debates or discussions about some topics. Knowledgeable people who studied a lot about many different subjects can talk at great length about their studies in their speech or writings when discoursing with others as studies would add grace and honor to their words which make them appear more persuasive and therefore make it easier for them in convincing others to agree with them. Referring to Hogan’s essay, he describes that when he went to the colonel to talk about tennis on one evening, he agreed to the colonel to learn tennis from him after having a conversation with the colonel as he writes “or perhaps it was his enthusiasm, my love for his stories and respect for his retired rank, his war experiences, or his genial personality and his enthusiasm, that I just felt I didn’t want to disappoint” (254). Hogan repeats the word “enthusiasm” twice in this statement, showing that the way the colonel told him his stories made the author get persuaded by the colonel’s intense and eager enjoyment about tennis. As the matter of fact, Hogan’s essay which was written in the later time from Bacon’s helps people see how some of these values were applied in one’s life. For people to get comprehensive learning and benefits from what they have studied, they have to put them into practical practices. Learning theories or basic ideas of some subject of studies are not fully useful until people use as well as apply them in their lives as both theories and practical knowledge should come
