On November 20th, 2015, I went and saw The Circle held on the first floor of Hugh Gills Hall at San Jose State. The work was written by David Eggers, and directed by Jessa Brie Moreno and Joshua Marx. The play is about a company called “The Circle” that develops surveillance technology. Throughout the play, the audience can interact with actors and the setting in order to learn more about the company and as it progresses. It focuses on the three founders (played by Vincent Macareno, Elizabeth Gibbons, and Kevin Jasper). One character, Mae Holland (played by Jessica Osegueda), is primarily looked upon during the play as she is caught breaking the law. As the play continues, Mae’s journey is documented from being tentatively accepting of the …show more content…
All of the seats had been removed and fake grass had been implemented on the floor of the seats to give a new age-y feel. People had to both sit and stand to be able to view the performance comfortably. Taking away the seats is smart, as everyone is constantly on the move in the performance anyways (including the audience). However it’s helpful in another way too. The awkward feeling of standing and watching such a performance, reminds me of having to use a standing desk because it’s new and it’s supposed to be better for you than a sitting desk anyways. This is what “The Circle” as a company seems to try to sell in their products. Sure, being filmed can be uncomfortable however the transparency that comes from it is better for us in the …show more content…
I was able to feel more a part of the “company” and my participation create an atmosphere that got me into the world of the play. The spectacle was effective from an outsider’s perspective, but even more so when the audience member gets to be a part of what’s going on. However, because I was being pulled in so many different directions I felt like I personally missed a lot of the plot. While I was being escorted to “The Renaissance,” an important plot point was happening during “The Gilded Age.” I went through many small areas that didn’t tell me anything about the plot in general. In fact, it didn’t dawn on me until after I was done with the play that the performance spanned over the course of a long period of time. It’s an ambitious project, to be sure. However, if this production was to be done again they would have to be careful and ensure that most, if not all, parts of the play can give some insight as to what’s happening to the
On February 26th 2016, I went out with my friend to saw this event. It was the first time of my life to be in such production. I was not a fan of theaters. I thought they are boring. Now, my mind has changed because the play was amazing. So, on the next day,

There is one this I didn’t like and that seemed like a major mistake. Since I was near the side, where the back of the stage was, I could hear people moving around. Now, this isn’t a huge deal, but when something is supposed to be quite and I hear footsteps it can be very distracting. They should have been more mindful of
Research for The Laramie Project, Moises Kaufman's nationally successful play, began one month after a horrific crime occurred in Laramie, Wyoming. Members of Kaufman's theatrical group, Tectonic Theater Project, travelled to the open ranges of the West in order to gather in-person interviews from Laramie's populace. The purpose was to capture the emotions, reflections, and reactions of the people who were most closely and personally associated to the crime—the brutal beating and subsequent death of a young gay college student named Matthew Shepard. This incidence had become a national symbol of the struggle against intolerance and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in the U.S. One of the most powerful “moments” in the play was “Dennis Shepard’s Statement” in which Matthew’s father delivered a moving and very
Playspent is an online-based game of balancing the budget while doing all the activities necessary in a life of a low-income person or family. It is designed in a way to present the life of a low-income person or family. It might be an online-based game but it has a lot of connection with the real life scenarios. Based on my experience of playing this game, it is a game that requires critical to make each and every decision in various scenarios. During the game, I couldn’t understand it is something I am doing online rather; it is designed in a way that made me feel I am actually making the decisions in my real life. This game can easily pursue someone to think about the reason behind poverty and the life of people with poverty. Moving on to
This was the first play or theatre performance that I have attended. I was unsure of what to expect, but I heard great things about this play. Furthermore, the first aspect of this production that caught my attention was the design of the set. The design gave the feeling of a run down urban neighborhood by making the outer parts of the stage look like an old brick building. The building looked like one you would find in a low-income area or projects. The scenery of the play set the stage for what type of production this would be. I especially liked the way they carefully chose not to place just any kind of props on the stage. The dusty
To start, one of the many things that stood out to me was The Lady who was mysteriously present in every scene. Without lines until the very end of the performance, it was like she was watching and learning from the play simultaneously with audience. Initially, I couldn’t pinpoint the importance of her role in the production, yet along with
Growing up, I have been to multiple theatre productions. I have seen the musical Wicked and the Lion King on Broadway, A Christmas Carol at the Alley Theatre and several high school productions including Greese and Much Ado About Nothing. This production was much different than the ones I have been to in the past. This play was on a smaller scale and the cast was smaller. However, this production felt more intimate since the audience was physically closer to the actors.
In this paper I will be discussing the play called Disconnect. I will be discussing my experience, my intial reaction to the play and design elements that stood out. I also will gives examples of common themes I recognize and the overall plot. This was a remarkable play writing by theater devise. Th graceland cast and character put on a show that must be scene by many.
Seeing my friends and other students having fun and making me feel like I was up on that stage with them. There were two specific characters that really stood out to me, these two characters stood out to me because, they were full of emotion and energy through the whole night for all the shows. My favourite characters were Corny Collins, and Amber Von Tussle. I think the rest of the cast could have used more energy and used their emotions more because, through most of the show some people showed no emotion at all and had a straight face. In the opening number of the play everybody had energy and was happy with emotions. I think that was the best energy in the whole show. However, I get it the lights on the stage are hot and by the end of the night you get exhausted because you are using up all your energy. You got to fight through it either by staying hydrated, eating, or taking a rest on a break you must get through. Performing is a very hard thing to do, and while you are working your butt off some people in the audience think it's easy. Until they try and do it and find out the challenges and how hard it is to do the things we
The space allows the audience to become part of the show, and also allows the actors to be more engaged with their surroundings. The space that was picked for this production fit the play absolutely perfectly. The stage was set up in the round where the audience on three sides surrounded the stage. This type of space made for even more interaction between the audience and the actors. At one point in the play I could feel the breath of one of the actors on stage.
Lee-Cooney uses a fast paced script in order to cover the time spans of Juli’s life, and cleverly layer the numerous stories within these periods. Though effective and enticing it also leaves the audience slightly confused at what is happening, and which characters are currently on stage, especially at the start of the play, since numerous roles were played by a single person. The actors and actresses played multiple roles and did a fantastic job bringing their characters to life. Though there were many stand-out moments within the play, it was the scenes between that of Samuel Valentine as Juli, and Sandro Colarelli, who played numerous roles, but in particular as the caricature police officer. There is one scene within the play when Juli
Throughout the semester we have been exposed to plays of varying styles of writing/directing and play structures, including Kantor’s Grotowski’s Poor Theater, Theater of Death, and realism in an effort to further our understanding of the way that the Holocaust is represented in the theater. Akropolis, Dead Class and Who Will Carry the Word each have their own benefits in their differing depiction of the Holocaust. By eliminating the distractions posed by props, lighting, costumes and set designs, Jerzy Grotowski’s forces the viewer to draw direction and meaning from the words that the actors are speaking and their nonverbal communication, including their body movements and their tone in the play Akropolis. When four of the prisoners press

Barnes(1020), argues that the ‘Fences’ is one of the few plays that exposes reality as opposed to the usual confines of art as in most of the plays. According to Barnes, the play is full of life intimations, the society’s images as well as a man’s impressions. The author vividly exposes on the experiences of blacks while in America. Using Troy Maxson, a hero in the play, he explains how the delayed civil movements delayed the dreams of this black in America, Troy. Barnes explains that Troy was once a refugee from the South who turned to be a thief and finally a murderer ending up in a jail where he learned baseball.
