Jill Walker Instructor Milham ENG 101 12 October 2017 Many Americans celebrate a wide variety of holidays that memorializes an event that changed history or feelings of love, gratitude and prosperity. However, on Halloween many dress in haunting costumes, go door to door for an overload of candy, carve silly and scary pictures into pumpkins, and watch horror films to celebrate, with out a clear reason to why. There is no love or gratitude linked to this holiday, only an eerie evil and mischief. All of our most illogical fears come to life in haunted houses, movies, books and cemetery walks. On one occasion he tricked the devil into climbing a tree. Once the devil was in the tree jack carved a cross into it, trapping the devil in the tree and only set him free after the devil said he would never go to hell. However, once jack died he couldn’t go to heaven because of his trickery, and was sworn out of hell so the devil gave jack a single ember of light and jack placed it in a hollowed out turnip so it would never burn out as he journeyed through eternal darkness. For protection the Celts would place a light in a hollowed out turnips to scare away evil spirits ( ). As missionaries came to the Celts land and changed religious practices, there traditions evolved. It then became a day to pray for the dead trying to make it to heaven. They still went door to door and still wore costumes but the meanings were slightly altered. They went door to door to sing and collect “soul cakes”. They wore costumes to disguise himself from the spirits who sought revenge on their enemies. Over time the name also change. Instead of Samhain it was now all souls day and named the mass for the day all hallows mass, which made the 31st all hallows eve, which eventually evolved into
