The Social Media Scare
Propaganda, a tool that has been used to influence the beliefs of the masses throughout the ages. It can be used for good such as the British During WW2 to keep the spirit of the British people in the war and it can be used for evil such as Nazi propaganda that dehumanized the
Jewish people. While propaganda is good at influencing people, it fails at spreading the truth of matters. Often propaganda relies on an enemy to dehumanize, to do this propagandist often lie or stretch the truth to convert people to their cause. This is what the American media has become, nothing more than propaganda for either the right or the left. The effect of this is social media, that is filled with forging influences, media bias, and causes echo cambers. These factors that are crumbling the foundation of American democracy.
American democracy cannot function if foreign powers can exert influence within
American social media. Foreign powers do not have the best interest of the American people in mind when they try and influence American media. When Foreign powers try to influence
American media, they do it to further their own goals. Such as what Russia attempted during the 2016 election. “Over 3,000 global news outlets also inadvertently published articles containing embedded tweets by the confirmed Kremlin-linked troll accounts in over 11,000 news articles in the run-up to the 2016 election” (Poke). Russia wanted Trump to win over
Clinton because it would be in the
I would say that the Jews and African Americans are good examples for this type of propaganda. The reason why I pick these two groups is because African Americans and the Jews had the same thing in common in history as the Japanese Americans did during the mid 1900’s. African Americans had to be slaves during the 1800’s, for they didn’t get there “freedom” till the late 1800’s. The Jewish people were also in the same position as the Japanese Americans; however, the Jews had much worse than what the Japanese Americans had been through because they were being killed and their population had decreases massively. Therefore, both of the groups would react that no matter what ethnicity they are from, or what ancestor they came from, they wouldn’t agree with the foe even if they came from that
Nowadays journalists have the responsibility to report facts as accurately, objectively, and disinterestedly as is humanly possible. ‘’The, honest, self-disciplined, well-trained reporter seeks to be a propagandist for nothing but the truth’’ (Casey, 1944b).
One of the reasons propaganda has such power is because of it, in a way, brainwashes people to believe something over the other. People can easily use propaganda to control people or convince them to believe that they are correct even if they were talking complete nonsense. Document
Propagandist use words that are bland and euphemistic. Special appeals are to accommodate certain groups of people. The use of plain-folks is to make the group believe that their ideas or views are “of the people”6. The band wagon use of propaganda is for people to think that since everyone else is doing something, so should they. False connections leads to the technique of transfer. Transfer constantly uses symbols and its main purpose is to “carry over the authority, sanction, and prestige of something we respect and revere to something the propagandist would have us accept”7. The testimonial technique is when someone famous or someone that a person respects says something and since they say it, well then that must be right, even if that person has no real knowledge of the statement made. The question of bad logic or propaganda is that there is logical and illogical conclusions. The propagandist “deliberately manipulates logic in order to promote their cause”8. Another part of logical fallacies is unwarranted extrapolation which basically is when the “communicator attempts to convince a person that a particular action will lead to disaster or to utopia”9.
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin both use propaganda as a technique to get people to support them. Using propaganda shows the public what they want to hear and see, even if it’s not true they use this method to trick people into thinking they are going to help and make life better for them. Nevertheless, this is a tactic that has worked for both leaders during their time. They would manipulate the truth to the people of their country to gain their trust.
You might think war is fought with men and weapons, but one of the most dangerous weapons a country can use is also an unexpected one. Propaganda was one of the most dangerous weapons that was used in World War 2 by both the Nazis and the Allies. War is fought with men and weapons but, how do you get those men to join your cause. This is where propaganda comes in, but let’s start at the beginning.
Bernays, when addressing the negative connotation of propaganda, claimed it is neutral and “vicious only when its authors consciously and deliberately disseminate what they know to be lies, or when they aim at effects which they know to be prejudicial…” Comparatively, Burke asserts that “Hitler’s book certainly falls under the classification of hate” as he united his nation under a sinister cause. Bernays emphasized that propaganda is affecting the public on a mass scale. Following a demographic rise, propaganda resulted in a fragmentation of messages, meaning it will express influence using an assortment of ways in a variety of groups. According to Hitler’s rhetoric, the mass demographic is female and they desire a dominant male—a desire that can be
In the United States, much of the media is controlled by Political Parties or commercial corporations. Presidential elections have become a war between media outlets that state either facts or fiction about opposing candidates. This propaganda spreads out to social media such as Facebook and Twitter (Hamilton and Kosar). Because of the bombardment of political propaganda, the producers of this information or misinformation direct public opinion. Government agencies also use networks and social media to sway public opinion as detailed in the Washington Post.
Imagine a powerful tool someone could use in order to reach and influence the masses, from even a small community to a whole nation or even multiple nations. Something that can be used to spread awareness and information, whether it be true or false, used to paint a picture and influence masses to a single viewpoint. Propaganda: “ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to benefit a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.” Could there be a more perfect tool used to influence millions of people; whether it be promoting or bashing a person, and idea, or a nation? Something as innocent as a poster on wall seen by a passerby, but with a sentimental message that urges attention. People have
Propaganda is in use practically everywhere and has been for hundreds of years. Various forms of propaganda has been used throughout history to effectively relay different messages, such as positive messages or harmful, discriminatory messages. However, all forms of propaganda are utilized with the same intent -- to alter public perceptions into the initiator’s beliefs. Propaganda can vary from being an innocent company slogan, such as Apple’s “Think Different”, to the crucial factor that determines the difference between winning and losing a war.
In the more recent years due to the increased use of the everlasting advancements in technology, such as social media; and biological understandings of how the human brain works, the American media has corrupt many different aspects of the American society such as politics and racial discrimination.
The author presented information on propagandist strategies and how, theoretically, to psychologically affect an audience, but never presented information on the actual effect. Another limitation of this source was that the chapter titles were not allusive to the content of the chapter, they were very vague.
"Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea." ( Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, 1926).
We live in a world of technological innovation where mass media is a major part of us today. People make assumptions on what they hear. They do not try to analyze the situation to see who is right and who is wrong, and mass media is the main source of manipulating one's mind. The concept of propaganda has changed over time. Propagandists create ideas stereotypically through the use of propaganda and use media to promote it and target people's minds to have influence on their views towards a certain group of people. These ideas create negative or positive images in the intended audience's minds. However, it is notable that the information is only the one that is exemplified through media and therefore, can be
There are two types of propaganda: sociological propaganda; the spreading of an ideology through the mass media, and political propaganda; efforts that are sponsored by governments and political groups that alter a persons’ interests. All propaganda has a direction, and the overall quality determines whether it will have a positive or negative effect over the masses. Our entire nation is a vast propaganda operational system that is greatly linked to education, consumerism and politics. A great deal of what makes up propaganda and how it is placed among the masses lies in understanding the overall emotional and physical states of these groups of people and in finding a way to draw a persons’ attention to capture their hearts, breaking down
