1. Introduction

China and Japan relations can be best describe using realism at time as it consist mostly of conflicts of interest. The reasons for this is their history especially in the World War II period and different ideologies in the cold war period. As a result, the two nations do not trust each other and try to maximize the effectiveness of their respective military’s power. This essay will discuss the cause and effect of this conflicting relations between China and Japan.

China Communist Party was able to achieve victory over its nemesis the Nationalist Party that turned China over to the communist bloc. The capitalist’s states were very concern about this because it believes China would spread communism all over Asia. The solution to this problem for them is Japan. Japan was what the United States called a big success of capitalist system in Asia that could rival China. As China military continue to grow and United States’ propaganda that label communists countries as evil; Japan was given the impression that Communist China would threaten its states, this led to Japan allowing United States to set up military bases in its territory and sent a lot of warships around its water. This reliance had made Japan feels safe and weak in term of military power. Until recently United State involvement with the Middle-East and China sea power denial made the United States withdrew troops from East Asia (Leaf, 2014). Japan feels vulnerable, and for the first time since World War II, broke its pacifism and starts to modernize its military. As China’s military continues to grow, its neighbors follow closely behind. Japan deserves a special attention in this case. Recently, China adds more pressure by having military drills on the Sengoku/Daiyu Islets and the new declaration of Chinese air defense zone have put Japan on edge. Technically Japan does not have a military force or to be specific military force to attack. Japan constitution under article 9 states that Japan is a pacifist country and any military the country have is for self-defense purpose only. However, many countries like India, Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia support Japan military modernization, which gave Japan more reason to do so (Leaf, 2014). Japan security force is one of the most advance in the world because Japan not only receive technology from the United States but recently spending funding into researching its own brand as well. Japan military consist of the most advance jet fighters and huge fleet of submarines. China is not falling behind this at all, in fact the only reason that Asia start military modernization is because China started it. China increasing its military budget is very alarming for many countries in Asia. Missiles technology, war ships, and huge populations is just short list of China arsenals. China also look to control the cyber space and set up an espionage network
