Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy composed by William Shakespeare, based on the long narrative poem by Arthur Brooke, The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet, which is based on an earlier Italian story. The play takes place in Verona, Italy. The exact time period of the text is not directly addressed, but is supposedly in the 1590’s. The play focuses on two characters, Romeo and Juliet, each from one of two feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo is of Montague blood while Juliet is a descendant of the Capulets.
In Act I, Romeo had been in love with Rosaline, a member of the Capulets. He claims that he is deeply in love, however, she does not feel the same way. Benvolio, the cousin of Romeo, made it his mission to help Romeo
